Of course, I don't know all the ins and outs under the hoods of the OSs, but I do like Windows 8 and 8.1 even more. Honestly, going back to my Win7 pcs feel a bit like going back to an older machine, despite hardware.

Except both my desktop and my laptop have touch screens attached, and they certainly aren't tablets. So that method won't work.

sure it would. its only a default setting - if a touch screen device is detected, default to the touch/metro mode. you're in a very small minority of PC users with a touchscreen.

There are a huge number with laptops with touchscreens, and the number just keeps growning. There isn't really any reason to automate the selection for the user, it is much better to just let them choose when the OS is going through it's setup. After you choose your time zone and color scheme, you pick if you want the full screen metro or the start menu. Simple, no chance of mistake and no forcing anything on the users, the users gets to decide for themselves.
