This morning when I started up my laptop and left it idle for about 5 minutes windows maintenance started doing its thing and I left it doing so, but I noticed after an hour or so it did not stop, the cpu load stayed at 2%, I have hdd defragging turned off. Now the whole day when its idle when I don't touch it maintenance starts and cpu load stays at 2%, I don't know what it's doing but it never finishes, I also restarted the laptop but it's the same.

All day it has been doing windows maintenance, now it seems to have stopped. Weird that the cpu load stayed at 2% while doing its thing.
Usually it does maintenance for about 30 minutes every day and then it's done.

I noticed this with my Windows 8 Asus laptop a while back...but I used to put it into sleep mode which would go into hybrid sleep mode in Windows 8 and delay this. Leaving it running usually resolved. Have you manually tried to run defrag? Chkdsk? How about ending the process and running those items?

It does not defrag with windows maintenance, I have disk defragging turned off.
If I don't do anything for 5 minutes the maintenance process starts again but the cpu load stays at 2% and I barely see the HDD's light blinking.

Do you keep touching it?

The maintenance only runs when idle, as soon as I touch the touchpad it stops.
On the internet I was reading about people that had maintenance running even when they were using the computer, but thats not the case with me.

Well indexing is helpful when it is needed, shouldn't take long to build, and really doesn't consume a whole lot on modern systems. Why don't you use Optimize and Defrag? Windows 8 actually does a good job with Trim n Defrag. I used to disable stuff and try to "customize/trim features of" my OS to my likings, it's more of a waste of time now than ever imho. That's just my experience though.

I agree on system restore, especially if you can go back to before you notice this becoming an issue. Maybe run an SFC (command line run : sfc /scannow), see if there's any system file corruptions. If it errors out, run a scandisk/chkdsk with repairs.

Keep us posted.

I trim and defrag manually, it's only needed once a month I found out. I wanted to set optimizing on only for the SSD but this does not work, it can either be on for all partitions or for non.

Lastnight it finally stopped with Automatic Maintenance, it did it the whole day with cpu load on just 2%, no idea what it did but it was finally finished.

You don't defrag an SSD. And as far as everything else leave it alone. Sounds like your overthinking this stuff. with a SSD turn off defrag and if you want make your page file smaller if you have enough ram. Let trim, trash clean up, indexing just do its thing. When I use to mess with all that stuff its just causes problems down the road. Also don't cram a bunch of stuff on an SSD. They like space to work. Otherwise they get slow over time

Again windows maintenance never stops, I went to the action center and clicked now manually to let it do it's job, it's running for several hours now and it does not finish. The first minutes the CPU load went up so assuming it actually was doing something. After a while the system is at 2% load and it stays like that if I don't touch it.

I don't do a system restore since I did not install new software lately, only windows updates, but before the updates I had the same issue.

When my Asus laptop did the same I used the thing and ignored it...it'll work itself out. Manually run updates, go to START (if you installed a start button) or Right click, go to CMD. Do Chkdsk C:, if clean, do SFC /SCANNOW, if OK, consider doing a Windows 8 reload (you can do this from within the OS, no DVD needed). It'll set it up just like the day you bought it.

My Asus came out of it eventually...I was too busy with college, work and kids to really focus on that minor issue. But a reload should take care of it if it's truly a bother. Keep us posted!

I have "Idle Maintenance" and "Regular Maintenance" disabled in the Task Scheduler.
Now it does not run anymore when idle.

I will defrag my hdd and optimize my ssd manually.
I have scheduled windows defender anti virus scanning automatically once a week.
I do windows updates manually.

I don't think that windows automatic maintenance when idle important is, or is it?
