    from browsing through that,it seems-

1.there is a 1-5fps differance between gaming performance on vista/xp.
    2.32bit vista/xp is very slightly faster than 64bit vista/xp
3.aeroglass has NO performance hit on gaming performance on vista.

it seems vista disables aeroglass when rnning 3d applictions,ie-games

64bit slower than 32bit!? Oh dear...

But which is faster XP or Vista? (I think we know the answer already... LOL)

dont see why 64bit would be any faster as there not testing any 64bit software out on them, imo thats a pointless comparison :wtf: also wonder why it would be slightly slower? 64bit drivers maybe ?

bah fed up of reading about vista vs xp now anyway (no offence intended to the thread starter, just in general :D ) ill wait until mid 07 and prolly just dual boot with xp and use them both as needs be ;)

Have you read other Firingsquad review? they always favor the most expenisive or the most current thing...they get paid by who ever they review...

    from teh wiki!

but if you go 64bit...you can have 1tb of memory ;)

Well, if this review stands for anything?

It appears that VISTA "suspends" AERO-GLASS on your desktop into the background & while you full-screen game (this "exclusive mode" they're talking about I am guessing), you don't take a MAJOR performance beating!

    ==================================================

    QUOTE:

    http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/windows_vista_aero_glass_performance/page4.asp

FiringSquad: We ran some benchmarks with Aero Glass on and off and noted no performance difference when using Catalyst 7.1! Normally under an OS you see a slight 3-5% performance hit when you turn on the eye candy, but that wasn’t there under Aero Glass which was definitely surprising. Do you think the new driver model helps Aero Glass performance or is it something else?

Andrew Dodd: Basically (pretty much because of the new Vista driver model) the Vista OS just suspends Aero in the background, (once you enter 3D exclusive mode it would be a waste of GPU resources to keep running Aero). So that’s why there’s no performance impact

    ==================================================

(My guess is VISTA probably shuts it off nearly completely, leaving only a "stub" of it in memory & pages out what resources it took up temporarily to the pagefile.sys would be my guess - & heck, since it's "DirectX 10" driven anyhow, the vidcard most likely handles a good 90% of it anyhow, so temporarily suspending AERO GLASS would have the effect they stated/illustrated, leaving the GPU to the game, period/"exclusively")...

    :)

    * I'd be happy about that, especially ATI vidcard using folks...

    APK

P.S.=> I have NO idea if the folks from the site noted for this test are "crooked" or not, but it seemed like a decent enough review, upon "cursory examination" on my part so far @ least... apk

So..., forget about the review. Is as good as nothing.

Does wiki is always tell the truth?

Is that make your game/other aplication (current game/application) run faster?

    Arto.

XP and Vista are very close, a great sign for a first driver release. BF2142 even gets a nice performance boost under Vista, while Company of Heroes and Oblivion get slight increases in performance under vista. Sign of good things to come... maybe.

Since Microsoft's own opengl emulation is so screwed up, can Nvidia or ATI fix that with their drivers, or is it fixable at all?

Wiki is complied source a facts, not bias opinions...they can be typos, but it is a rock solid source.

Didnt say it will run faster, but 64bit will address more memory for the memory demanding users.

I want the Vista, but I know I would be almost as happy with DX10 for XP.

in my personaly exp with vista and 7.1 drivers its a bit slower on the same multi boot system, load times on games(time it takes the game to load) are slower, i assume this is because it has to unload areo, least i hope thats why....

fps are a bit worse, in my exp it was 5-7 avrage, saw some 10-11 drops in a few games tested, but that wasnt for long periods just studders.

vista is resorce heavy, to power game on it u neeed 2gb ram MINIMUM and at least an x1300xt video card.

dx10 for xp is NOT going to happen.

Q: Will DirectX 10 be available for Windows XP?

A: No. Windows Vista, which has DirectX 10, includes an updated DirectX
runtime based on the runtime in Windows XP SP2 (DirectX 9.0c) with changes
to work with the new Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) and the new audio
driver stack, and with other updates in the operating system. In addition to
Direct3D 9, Windows Vista supports two new interfaces when the correct video
hardware and drivers are present: Direct3D9Ex and Direct3D10.
Since these new interfaces rely on the WDDM technology, they will never be
available on earlier versions of Windows. All the other changes made to
DirectX technologies for Windows Vista are also specific to the new version
of Windows. The name DirectX 10 is misleading in that many technologies
shipping in the DirectX SDK (XACT, XINPUT, D3DX) are not encompassed by this
version number. So, referring to the version number of the DirectX runtime
as a whole has lost much of its meaning, even for 9.0c. The DirectX
Diagnostic Tool (DXdiag.exe) on Windows Vista does report DirectX 10, but
this really only refers to Direct3D 10.

tigger, thats common knowlege to anybody whos been paying ANY ATTENTION AT ALL, over the past year.

ms COULD MAKE dx10 work under 2k and up IF THEY WANTED, but they dont, they want to sell more copys of vista, hence they plan to FORCE the issue to anybody who wants to beable to play games in dx10 mode.

the fact is that vista'a only major changes are GUI, enhanced prefetch(more shit auto loaded to ram), and the fact that its DRM TO THE CORE!!!!!!!!

my personal feeling is as my buddy likes to say every time he sees vista mentioned "fuk vista" i will wait for a de-drm'd version to appear, then it can run as a 2nd or 3rd os on my system IF i ever feel the need to run it, i may just wait for the next version to come out since my os will have support till then :)
