German researchers have broken the world record for the fastest electric car.

The Grimsel electric racing car accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.513 seconds over a distance of less than 30 m.

The record-breaking Formula Student electric car was developed and built in less than a year by a team of 30 students at ETH Zurich and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Grimsel is AMZ’s fifth electric vehicle and sets new standards in lightweight construction and electric drive technology.

Thanks to the use of carbon-fibre materials, grimsel weighs just 168 kg.

The four-wheel drive electric racing car has four specially developed wheel hub motors that are capable of generating 200 hp and 1700 Nm of torque.

1.5 Seconds... Nuts. That's pulling almost 2g's at launch in basically a go-kart.

It will be beaten pretty easily I think.

Not really impressive because it's not a production car (safety requirements, practical design, etc.) and they use racing slicks ("cheater tires").

Ford, I dare to bet the regs on safety are fairly high in Formula Student. Think of all the potentially sued universities! :p

Case in point: no signal lights and the bumpers (does it even have bumpers?) aren't at regulation height. It also hasn't likely undergone any crash safety testing. Formula Student may have a high bar in terms of safety but it isn't anywhere near as high as the bar set for "production" vehicles.

Still going to be safer than pre 1990 cars driving on US roads me thinks? ;)

I don't see why the car being something it's not (road legal/production/safety/whatever) has anything to do with the achievement.

Because making an electric vehicle accelerate fast is not all that difficult; that is, after all, its nature (flat torque curve and all). It really is just a function of traction + power + a battery only big enough to get the job done. Put a light weight driver in it, mash the pedal, and, surprise, acceleration! Trying to get a reciprocating engine to accelerate fast is a lot more complicated and much more of a technical marvel. Even trying to get a turbine (think M1 Abrams) to accelerate fast is more interesting.

Its a cool little go kart and a cool achievement, but I agree with Ford here. Electric motors are ALL torque and they only have 1 gear.

Heres something similar: Tesla Model X beating another car while towing the very car its racing against.

How is this Science and Technology thread?
The thread is about a glorified electric cart with independent 4WD, not that I want to take any credit away from that team, on the contrary ,well done! ;
but that's not a car as the forum thread says, thereby I forever cast it to General Nonsence sub thread.
If it had any usefulness, oh but wait , surely its fun to top out at 85mph in "3seconds", but thats about it, didn't NASA sent a 6x6 rover to Mars still operational?

If you Did not have your head up your proverbial you would have read

Not All Science is Groundbreaking
Students have to learn how to develop and deploy Research and to work in Teams

Electric motors can be built to run through an ancillary Clutch and gearbox to give multi gear ratio's

Because it's s practical to make speed benches, with a car made completely out of carbon fiber and is smaller than a go cart..lol..
Yea, real world speed test right there.. XD
