Well my 965 BE is running fine on my ASRock 970 Extreme 3 board at 4ghz until I switched to an FX6300 and it throttles like crazy at 4.2ghz

If that's what happens with them at stock (3.5 Ghz for the FX, 3.7 Ghz for the PII) I must have a crap 970 motherboard (for it to perform worse with the FX @ 4.4 Ghz and the PII @ 4.1 Ghz).

Your system specs says you have a Biostar TA970, did you already swap the ECS board to a biostar board?

I had the Biostar for a year before the ECS went on sale so cheap a few months back. The Biostar is even worse. The VRMs hit 80C plus in about ten minutes of Prime95 and it throttles. Like the ECS it was a cheap buy (55 bucks). I need to quit looking for a screaming bargain where hardware is concerned. There rarely are any.

If your thinking new board for the FX chip, give the Gigabyte 990FXA UD3 a look. Great board. I have 2 of them.

No joke that your 6300 throttle ... a ASR970ex3 is just so weak ... (its a 4+1 iirc i had one ) basically those 970 (4+1) are for running stock.

well AMD is bargain since a high end mobo cost half the price of a Intel mobo and most of the time you have mobo+CPU for the price of a single CPU from them... after that if you still look for cheaper than the cheapest high end 990X/990FX indeed you gonna fall on a TA970, 970 Extreme 3 and any other cheap 4+1 970 mobo and they only are 40-50$ cheaper tho ... :D

hum the 990FXA UD3 is cheap too and 8+2phase (my M5A99X is a 6+2 iirc) as long as you have more than 5 you would be kinda fins to run with OC

i had to cool vrm's with a fan to get the 8120 to run at stock because the board was 4+1
thats why i mentioned it earlier..
if i didnt actively cool the vrm then they would get to hot and throttle the cpu for protection.
also if you use an after market heat sink then that just makes it worse on the vrm's the stock heat sinks blow down towards the transistors helping to keep them cool. but id definatly point a small fan on to them.
and probably get some of those small square ram heat sinks with thermal tape and stick them on the transistors, and try to get a fan pointing at them..

Then run occt and watch what happens to the oc. try and find a point where it wont throttle down. but a 63xx should not need as much power as a 8120 so you should be able to get a moderate oc id imagine.

but pushing 4+1 on amd can lead to burning out the vrm, msi generally dont protect theirs = more stable oc untill it burns out. gigabyte now protect the vrm so you get throtteling. but i hear earlier boards didnt have protection..

4+1 should be able to run a FX6300 at stock without cooling the vrm, so just point a fan at them and see what happens.

From what I understand the rev 2 and 3 boards weren't as good as the rev 1.1 and rev 4 with the rev 4 being the best. From my experiences as I have a rev. 1.1 and a rev 4.0, they both are beast overclockers. I run my 8350 at 4.4 with stock volts on both with no issues what so ever. Now I have the rev 4.0 under water so I am going to push it and see where it will go. It is running at 38c under full load crunching right now.

here a good example of a single threaded game

the FX-6300 is right around on par with the 980 BE with the latter having the clock speed advantage

here's the one on low res which is more cpu intensive

almost 2fps which is not much of a difference IMO
Depends on if it measures minimum frame rate and frame latency

Well, I ordered an ASUS M5A99X EVO R.2.0 from Amazon. It was $99 with a $20 rebate. I'm hoping to get 4.6 Ghz stable out of the FX-6300 with the Thermalright True Spirit 140 I'm going to put on it. Nephew's gonna get the Phenom II. Thanks for the food for thought everyone - TPU helpful as always!

It was 120 less a 20 dollar rebate ($99.99). Been watching for a bit - decent enough deal. Interested to hear about your new ASRock Killer when you get it.

yup, the FX is a vrm hog even with the Deneb's higher tdp req. Anyway I sold it and bought a 2nd hand CHV. Best upgrade ever :D
