Xbox 360 wrapped in towel

People people, fix your spelling, please.

The solder doesn't get hot enough to melt.
What happens is over time the solder breaks loose, and this is known as 'cold solder.'

Anyway, wrapping the 360 in a towel will cause it to heat up, and when metal heats, it expands. The expanding solder will make contact again, thus repairing it. Then when it cools down, the connection is broken again.

Lastly, please use a spell-checker, you sound like an 11-year-old. Also, do not say that you spell like crap because you are lazy, that's just stupid.

HMMMMN... first i do not spell like an 11 year old because some are crappy spellers some are good
I am bad at grammar but lets get straight this is a forum on the internet why bother correcting grammar mistakes if it still can understood? If it was something formal then yes i would take care. End of discussion.

Next i want to address the fact some people think i do not understand that the thermal paste heats up and becomes loose making contact again but is only temporary.
Next i want to say that the only way to solve the problem is to improve the cooling by lapping and better application of thermal paste plus better paste, better fans and general better cooling altogether. Now if you try to do that it will void the warrenty so just send it back and let them fix it.

I didn't feel like reading every post here, lol.

But yeah, it'll temporarily fix it. And by temporary I mean a few more days at the MOST

It's not the thermal paste I'm are talking about. I am talking about the actual solder, the stuff that bridges the connections between the board and the pins on the chip.

Solder is not the same as thermal paste, please read this solder page, and this thermal paste page to understand the difference.

Solder cracks under stress, stress caused by the rapid cooling and shrinking of metal.
If you want to see this effect, take a paper clip and bend it back and forth over and over in one spot. As you bend it, friction causes heat, and when you reach the apex of a bend, it rapidly cools for a short time. If you do it enough times, the paper clip breaks from the rapid heat/cold/heat/cold effect from bending it.

So, to get down to it, wrapping the 360 in a towel melts the solder and once you shut it off it breaks again... Shit, have him just go and buy another 360 and send that one off to be fixed, that way he don't 'die' waiting for it to be mailed to him... One of my friends own two 360's because they bought the first one soon as it came out and it had the same issue, so they bought the Halo 3 edition and mailed the old 360 in to get fixed.
Just curious though, if 2 towels melt solder then what is the goal of using a wet towel other than electrocution..?

the idea of the wet or forzen tea towel was to cool the 360 yeah i know it is dumbass honestly id just send the console back but he says he can do what he wants to do

yeah he can do what he wants to do but there is logic and social boundaries and rules and laws that say no in this case it breaks logic by keeping a f'd up console

I would hate to send something expensive back to get it fixed, it means I have to wait a long time while they try and blame it on water damage and send it back broken.

If my xbox360 was getting too hot id probably try some custom cooling solution like with a pc.

Well if your going to void the warranty noticeably you might as well do some sweet custom work, otherwise I would try to keep it on the down low so I could have it replaced later. :p

The towel "trick" actually heats up the 360 so the motherboard becomes more pliable and warps back into working position. It's a good way to melt components and start a fire. It works, but it's a really stupid idea.

You sure about that? I'm pretty sure the sadder has a lower melting point than the pcb.

Who really cares if it works or not, the towel trick is a stupid idea, period. Especially a wet towel. Tell him to send it to MS and it will work much better. If he can't part with his xbox for that long he has some serious issues.
