I have to work backwards, cause I only have memory to go on:

GTX970 - bought so I could give my previous card to my wife - first nVidia since 6600GT
R9 290 - bought because ... well, because

7950 - bought to play FFXIV:ARR at max settings
5850 - bought to play FFXIV 1.0 at max settings
4850 - bought because they were a second hand deal and wanted to experiment with crossfire
3850 - bought 2 of these for myself and the wife, dont remember for which game
X1950XT - bought to play FFXI
6600GT - the card which put me off nVidia again
X800XT - I have no recollection of this era, cant even recall which games I was playing back then
9800Pro - Half life 2!!!
FX5900 - the card which made me hate nVidia for stealing my hard-earned money (I was young and stupid

)
Ti4600 - could have been a 4400, dont remember exactly, epic card
GF 2 Ti - no recollection what model
GF 256- no recollection what model
Riva TNT 128- no recollection what model

I also owned a Voodoo2, but couldn't say at what time this was. Seem to recall buying it to play Unreal Tournament ('98-'99?)

My history is as follows:

TNT2 PRO - First computer I ever used, I was 9, still remember the name though, lived with this bad boy for 6 years.
6600GT - The second computer, first experience with OC witch led to a premature death of the card after 2 years.
9600GT - The replacement, still have this one, was in my current rig for a few days.
540M - Acer laptop while studying, was a nice experience.
650M SLI - Had such a laptop for about 6 months, mostly used it as a desktop, so sold it and..
R9 280X - First 'high-end' GPU, will be replacing till the new year.

I can't remember some of my oldies but I'll google to refresh my memory, first GFX card was a 3DFX or something.

The first 3DFX Voodoo needed a card to display the 2D. The connection is made via a VGA cable male / female at the rear of your computer. The VGA output of the 2D card log on 3DFX. 3DFX logs on to the screen. ^^
Over the 2D card was more effective power in games was being felt. That is why after the S3 Virge 4mb I switched to a Matrox Millenium 8mb.

It seems to me that the 3DFX was the first 3D accelerator card.

edit: I remember "p.o.d" & the first "Tomb Raider" with 3DFX patch that was really nicer than the standard versions (with Glide*.exe) ^^ (not only accelerated)...
