hello all

i experimented a personal failure with a Zotac GTX460 AMP! a friend asked my to test it on my computer if it works (he has a 460w psu just like my old one) since i changed for a Super Flower Aurora 600w modular psu (i read some good review on it and my retailer was doing a promo on it)

î had a EVGA GTX460 SC on my old 460w and it worked fine, on his comp the card started with on PcieX 6pin plugged but on 2: the Psu shut down (overload security?) so we thought the Zotac AMP! had a higher powerdraw than my old EVGA.

then we tried it on my comp, when turning on power, the back of the card went on flame (not big but still) seems a part of the alim phase caught fire, tho the Psu didnt shut off

the card was new but unfortunately not from a retailer so no waranty.

did we got a defective card (i suspect it tho)?
or was it the fault of the Psu

if someone had a same issue and know the culprit let me know :twitch:

luckly my mobo had only a ram holder slightly burned but all runs fine.

now he consider to buy a new Psu and a new card, does anyone know if CM GX Lite 600w is any good (my retailer is out of SF aurora )

funny : i've read the GX lite where silver but the one we have in a shop near us is black like the normal GX (i've read some bad review on the GX serie about noise and such but seems the Lite serie correct the noise problem)

The black squares are probably the video memory chips or voltage regulators or transistors.. What happened it fried itself when you unplugged the power connector to the video card. I say its more of a design flaw if it caught on fire.
If there is a warranty on it I would RMA it and this time do not unplug the power wires to the video card.

It sounds like the power supply is a cheap unit if its not. CPU can be overheating. Or if the system has been working fine since you removed the video I say there was a short on the video card to begin with that was causing a shutdown.
Probably the VRM on the card. These supply power to the GPU and the rest of the card. They can blow up or catch on fire if they can't handle the voltage flow.

It could be rooted to the power supply. If the power supply isn't correcting it's self in time or the power it supplies to the hardware has too much fluctuation then it could happen. If you have a budget power supply then it would probably be worth replacing the PSU. In the meantime I would get EVGA to RMA the card. You don't have 100% proof that it was the PSU.

Because if your card isn't powered, it will draw out more voltage and overheat.

oh we didnt unplug the card when power was on and without pciX 6pin connector the pc was only turned on for less than 1min for checking and the card caught fire when all was plugged (also the Super Flower Aurora 600w modular psu isnt specifically what we can call a budget psu)

well we passed over that card and brought a GTX 560 Ti 448 cores instead, wich runs perfectly with his CM GX lite 600w (only problem is listed in a new post in Nvidia zone on that forum, but meh ... not a biggie)
