You make it sound like L2 is the only measurement of performance. The second rig is astronomically faster. Personally, I would put in a $100-150 video card and turn that into a nice little gaming rig :)

Cache can make a big difference depending on what you are doing, but that quad will b-slap the P4 into the last century.
