it works on the pc too, you'll need the help of AnyDvD-HD to get it to work though and powerdvd is the only one i've seen to play hd-dvd/blu-ray decently.

I was just going to say the same thing. I saw them at Circuit City for $129.99 weeks ago, and I've seen them at Gamestops/Babbages for $89.99, $69.99 Used.

Good news for xbox 360 owners! Although I still believe Toshibia is just trying to make a profit on a product near death. Good news for 360 owners, but I think if you buy it is bad news in the long run...

i use it and nero ultra 8 and to me it works better than powerdvd 7 ultra...also a special edition of windvd works as well... Nero gives the full output as oppose to pdvd. every other disc that came out in hd powerdvd needs an update...while from i updated nero from the first installation it does quite well with all the hd movies...with the kingdom being the last one bought

Amazon was recently selling the for $79.99 with 6 HD-DVDs free, but that is no longer the case. Microsoft also officially announced the MSRP drop of the device to $129.99 today (from 179).

see this is what it bottles down to price because movies are going to look the same on both players
and the fact that the hd dvd addon for the 360 can work on a pc is a major bonus
its like this i dont really see hd formats taking off as storage because the way removable and external hard drives have been going they seem to be the obvious choice for storage and even flash memory is starting to get bigger capacity and lower price
i dont see pc games or any console taking up hd format disks except sony

smaller high tech games come out and then extra content to extend the gmae is distributed in the form of downloads and expansions

i fully support HD DVD tho as its cost is the main winning factor for me and i think if the consumer wasnt mislead into buying a ps3 because it has a blu ray player (blu ray is seen as something people might use in the future) it would be no1

Wow, I might grab one for 90 bucks or 70 bucks used. Id like to see Xbox 360 games utilitze the player personally. I mean, they charge too damn much for the game as it is, put it on HD DVD media and make the 10 dollar hike worth it.

What I don't understand is, why are Xbox360 games already the same price as PS3 games, if they are using older+cheaper media?

Sure USB can handle it. The transfer rate of HD-DVD is only ~36MB/s, that is far below the 60MB/s provided by the USB 2.0 connection. The HD-DVD drive is actually slower than the internal DVD drive, in terms of transfer speeds though, so load times would be longer and streaming data off of it might be a problem, though this isn't an issue with the interface, it is an issue with the drive itself. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray drives haven't reached the transfer rates that regular DVD drives have.

The issue is that eventually Xbox360 games will have to be multi-disc game because DVD9 discs simply don't provide enough storage space.
