Hardspell reports that NVIDIA may have cancelled working on the G200b (the 55nm version of GT200). Details on this new DirectX 10.1 graphics processor trickled in, it has 384 shader units, uses a 45nm fabrication process and incorporates 1 GB of GDDR5 memory at 4.00 GHz (effective) while the core could be clocked at 800 MHz with a 2.00 GHz shader domain. NVIDIA hopes to take on the R700 and its successor which unreliable sources claim to be based on the Super-RV770.

Hmmm... I don't know about this. I just read in a directX 11 article that Nvidia is skipping DX 10.1 all together. This sounds like something that might compete with R800, but I don't see how Nvidia can just dump GT200b, shrink the die to 45nm, and release it in time to compete with R700.
If NV didn't want this info leak, (if this info is true), and this news spreads far enough, GTX 280 sales are pwned.
by: erockerYes, precisely. nVidia has no reason to launch anything else to compete with the R700. If they lower the price of the GTX 260, or launch a Dual-GPU card, they will beat it, and still maintain a huge lead in the high to ultimate end markets with GTX 280 SLi and Triple SLi.

The GTX 200's JUST came out. Im sick of nvidia releasing new overpriced crap every month.

this is strange news from nvidia . they will do a die shrink and move to a new architechture with GDDR5 ?

I believe NVIDIA is bluffing and trying to get faith in their stock back. I know this is a tech website, but NVIDIA's stocks are plummeting. And when they release their annual reports I'm 100% sure that its gonna show they lost money on the production of the new GTX series. It's nice to have all these innovations in technology... but how about some useful marketing strategy first.

One company has the most practical card while the other struggles, then the other company catches up and has the most practical card while the other struggles. That's the way it's always been.

hmm interesting, at those clocks this card would definetly fly, the only reason the gtx280 doesn't best the 9800gx2 in every test was due to a low shader clock. upping that leave the 9800gx2 in the dust.
by: chronIf you want practical, buy any one of their lower cards, you don't have to have the top end. The only card that is any more "impractical" right now is the 280GTX. NVidia competes pretty well on all price fronts right now. The 280GTX is still insanely price, but they are dropping the price now that ATi has some competition for it.

For the past 2 generations nVidia has won the Price to Performance crown in all price points(practical and impractical). The soul exception to this was the HD3870x2 price point of $450, and the only reason was that nVidia didn't have a card in that price point.
Those specs are suspiciously similar to the ones that were rumored to be the ones of G100. That being said I only see 3 posibilities here:
1- This is false in some way or another.
2- Nvidia has been working on that chip since the days those specs were leaked and some people thought it was the chip it ended up being GT200, but was GT300 in reality.
3- Nvidia sandbagged because that chip was not needed and thought that Ati was not going to be that fast. Up until the launch it was not clear if RV770 had 480 or 800 SPs. 480 was the one that most thought was true, even some retailers had those specs listed on pre-order time. GT200 would have definately crunch a 480 SP RV770, and wouldn't be good for anyone included us customers if such a card (GT300) was launched at the same time as the hypothetical 480 SP Ati card. What would developers do? Increase quality to match Nvidia's power or optimize for that "low" 480 SP card?

by: newtekie1Right, believe me I know. I LOVE my 8800gt. It's just, the past 2 generations of cards were witness to the ATI/AMD merger, which I think may have interfered with ATI's ability to create good cards (somehow lol)

I'm about as happy with my 8800GT as I was with my X1800GTO, lets put it that way ;P
Well if AMD/ATi does totally take the lead I hope they don't start showboating like nVidia and get game publishers to put their logo on at the start of the game to make us wait that little bit longer to play.

Well GT300 very well may exist right now, it would fit Nvidia quite well, they had the first G80 tapped out before G71 it just wasn't ready to ship yet. GT200 was most likly ready to go last year but there wasn't a reason to launch the card and instead the G92 arrived first. So GT300 could exist right now and just need to be tapped out. Though id expect a GX2 260 or GX2 280 first using dual PCB like normal and it shouldnt be any less econmical than the R700 as the GT200 doesnt run any hotter or use as much power as the R770 based cards, so its well within Nvidia's means to double it up
