Apple just introduced the new Mac Pro featuring Intel “Nehalem” Xeon processors. Thanks to the new 8-core Intel architecture running at speeds up to 2.93 GHz, the new Mac Pro delivers up to twice the performance of the previous generation Mac Pro. It also features the latest graphics from both NVIDIA and ATI - the system can be purchased with either GeForce GT 120 with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory or Radeon HD 4870 with 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. The new Mac Pro also supports up to 32 GB of DDR3 ECC SDRAM and up to 4 TB of internal storage in four hard drive bays. Additionally the 45nm Mac Pro comes with revised interior that makes expansion even easier than before. Available next week, the new Mac Pro starts at $2,499. Visit Mac Pro web page, for more information.

It's two quad-core Xeons, and it looks like the E5520, X5550, and X5570 are being offered.

This is a dual Nehalem system. Click the link. 8 cores, 16 virtual cores.

They brought this to market very quickly! And a great price. Kudos.

And confirmation of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM

At best this thing is .7 times faster than the last model.

All this CPU power, and the highest graphics option is an HD4870? That seems rather wrong.

I'm more impressed they have a Radeon HD 4870 in one. Has apple finally realized some people may want to do more than check their mail? Anyway I still say its over priced.

That used to me true mdm-adph. But the new Photoshop is GPU accelerated. So yeah this setup is a serious/expensive bottleneck butt rape.

Its not a computer with a built in cheese grate no no no, Its a cheese grater with a computer built into it. What a selling point that would be for chefs.

It's not exactly meant to be a gaming system.

I find that games run rather well on my 4870 :D

Its not a gaming PC or a good Photoshop PC. However it would make and awesome cheese grader as Dr. Pepper stated. Anyway guys this is by far one of the most over priced things Apple has ever produced for the "pro" sector.

A platinum plated POS. I love how they market the 4870 as the nVidia killer :p rofl. Not saying anything bad about ATi here... it's just come on, they picked such a weak card to pit the 4870 against, and it's just a 512 card! This system will throw off so much heat.

I think you can put like 4 4870s in this thing. lol... It's such a beast.

EDIT: NVM, you can have 4x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB. Which really isn't bad either.

Come on! This will be one amazing gaming and production machine. Don't let your hatred get in the way of your logic.

This is clearly one serious machine. You would have to spend an incredible amount of money to build a PC that could compete against the Mac Pro and then you would have a machine that wouldn't look as good and couldn't legally (or reliably) run Mac OS X and Windows.
by Binge (March 3rd - 9:19 PM) - Reply
Most gaming production machines are not apple computers. In fact most companies will use proprietary software. This apple will be good for a... student trying to go pro.

You apparently I have no idea what I do for a living or what pros need.
