Intel Corporation today disclosed that the company has notified Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) that it believes AMD has breached a 2001 patent cross-license agreement with Intel. Intel believes that Global Foundries is not a subsidiary under terms of the agreement and is therefore not licensed under the 2001 patent cross-license agreement. Intel also said the structure of the deal between AMD and ATIC breaches a confidential portion of that agreement. Intel has asked AMD to make the relevant portion of the agreement public, but so far AMD has declined to do so. AMD's breach could result in the loss of licenses and rights granted to AMD by Intel under the agreement.
"Intellectual property is a cornerstone of Intel's technology leadership and for more than 30 years, the company has believed in the strategic importance of licensing intellectual property in exchange for fair value. However AMD cannot unilaterally extend Intel's licensing rights to a third party without Intel's consent," said Bruce Sewell, senior vice president and general counsel for Intel. We have attempted to address our concerns with AMD without success since October. We are willing to find a resolution but at the same time we have an obligation to our stockholders to protect the billions of dollars we've invested in intellectual property."

wow im really getting sick of intel, all together there trying to take out anyone that has a fat chance of making money, intel sickens me, i dont care if they make good processors, i would rather buy from a company that isnt run by a bunch of cry baby bitches hands down.
if someone has a owns a patent and someone buys the rigths and sings a contract they are bound by it. amd can cancel it if they don't like it if they don't obay the rules the owner can sue them in this case intel.

But i think this is just more of Intel's bullying tactics. I'm hoping that AMDs lawyers looked into and approved the Global Foundries deal before it happened and AMD is not breaching any contracts with Intel. It seems to me that Global Foundries is just another manufacturing vendor for AMD, just like TSMC, so all they'll be doing is making AMD CPUs and ATI GPUs, as well as take orders from other companies. So AMD is not tranferring the intellectual property to them but only using them to make their chips.
This might be Intel legal "saber rattling" and nothing more. I doubt AMD would make such a move without a HUGE legal backing. Most long time stock holders of any type are used to this kind of thing.
For the know, VIA doesn't have a fab of its own. It relies on foundry partners in Taiwan such as Fujitsu to make its GPUs and CPUs. Yet it has been holding its x86 license, which it inherited from the acquisitions of Centaur and Cyrix, two old x86 CPU manufacturers. Yet, Intel gets butthurt when AMD merely outsources its manufacturing to another company, which it holds a 30% stake in, which the company (TFC) doesn't mind when AMD calls it its subsidiary.

so this is looking like the same crap intel pulled with nvidia making chipsets.....this is garbage and intel is making itself look bad by suing every company that happen to be near them. whose next? ATi for licensing the GPU tech for use on intel chipsets while still working on AMD ones?

by: cdawallYea, that though occured to me too. They seem to be attacking those companies that they perceive as a threat. Though i doubt ATI will be next in line as Intel benefits from crossfire tech on their chipsets. I think that if VIA gets their shit together and makes Nano widely available they will be the next target as it will cause Atom sales to drop.

PPC-based processor vendors such as Freescale will hit the jackpot, so will the CELL consortium (or whatever is left of it). It wouldn't be hard for AMD to make PPC, it won't be hard for NVIDIA to make some either. At least the tyranny of Intel will end.
