ATI looks to be still in the mood to cater to the dying breed of AGP motherboard users. A Radeon HD 4770 graphics card made by PowerColor surfaced on Amazon.com (model: 1A1-G000004992), that boasts of support for the AGP interface, although a picture of the PCI-E variant accompanies it. The store claims it to be in stock, and priced at US $99, although PowerColor's website has no trace of it. We are in the process of finding out more about this card.
If indeed PowerColor made such a card, AGP users have something to rejoice: the fastest AGP accelerator, one that puts them into the current-generation of GPUs. The card features 640 stream processors, is DirectX 10.1 compliant, and features 512 MB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit memory interface. Until now, the fastest AGP card from ATI is the Radeon HD 3850 AGP.
Update (05/13): PowerColor responded to this article saying that the product is falsely advertised, and that the company neither has an HD 4770 AGP accelerator, nor is it currently in the works. In the course of the conversation however, the company disclosed that it is working on products based on the Radeon HD 4600 series (HD 4650, HD 4670) that are AGP-compatible.

Yep. Crap ! And here I was thinking I had the top of the top S478 system here, complete with the HD3850 AGP.....
I'll see prices, if it really is 99$, I might sell my card and get a new one just for the heck of it :toast:

If this is released I wonder if ATI/AMD will actually make some functional AGP drivers instead of having to use that old hotfix driver for AGP cards.

Amazon's botched listing makes a mess
According to our sources in Powercolor, the listing of a Powercolor HD 4770 AGP card is a simple mistake made by Amazon, and Powercolor has no plans for such card, at least not in near future. We already wrote that Powercolor is thinking of doing an HD 4600 series for AGP, but that is the only thing currently planned.
Amazon made a quite a fuss today after Powercolor's HD 4770 AGP card show up at its site. Unfortunately, numerous tech sites rushed to carry the news, and obviously forgot to contact Powercolor in the process. Obviously, the company was more than happy to clear up the mess caused by someone at Amazon.
Also, it was pretty strange to see a planned AGP card, as partners are practically fighting to get some extra GPUs for due to a shortage caused by healthy demand for the new card. The HD 4770 is the first 40nm desktop card, and this baby works like a charm, and its currently the best budget cards in the sub-$99 price segment.
So, the listing at Amazon is a mistake, and it is probably a plain PCI-Express card and we are sure that they will fix it soon. Those who wanted to see this card will be a bit disappointed but they can hope that Powercolor will launch its AGP 4600 series soon. (I'm waiting for a VLB version of the GT300. sub.ed.)

i'd get this for my old athlon xp 2500 system.... but it seems like the x800 i had in it was enough for that poor cpu...
Why is anyone that still plays modern games still using AGP?
Becuase they either refuse to upgrade or don't see any need.

by: btarunrWhat a shame. We've got 4 office machines on DDR1 AGP Q6600 that are in sore need of GPU upgrade. They currently contain noisy x800's. An AGP 4770 would have been perfect. Oh well!

Not sure why they would bother with a 4650 version... since it would be slower than the 3850. Might as well stick with one SKU and the 3850 rather than introduce a new SKU with lower performance. :(
Perhaps the excitement will encourage them to do an AGP 4770 or 4830 after all.

using the same proc, and same memory its very possible a agp card outperforms its pcie brother...
