Western Digital is adding another high-capacity hard drive to its ranks. This time, the company it looking to expand its Caviar Black series of performance desktop hard drives, with the RE4-GP (WD2002FYPS). This 2 Terabyte drive boasts of a large 64 MB of cache, and two controllers on board to up the performance. It spins at 7200 rpm, and uses the standard SATA II interface. With four platters inside it, the drive weighs in at 0.73 kg. Ahead of its global launch, the drive seems to have already made it to stores in Japan, where unit packs of the drive are decking up shelves. When released in the west, these drives could go for around US $300 a piece.

i hignly doubt it to weigh 0.73g. maybe 0.73kg!
interesting that the model name has GP in it (greenpower) yet its a black?
(P.S, its really a 64MB drive with 2TB of cache)

This is a mistake the RE-X is not a black drive. Its some special version thats a little better for servers and backed by WD. (its an Enterprise backed version "longevity durability ect") Black will be faster with bigger cache. This is def not it 64 for 2tb is no where near black black would be like 128 for 2tb. or more.

Third tab shows its specs. Interestingly, it has information about GreenPower.

by: MusselsYou mean it's a cache with 64MB of 2TB.

Actually, this is what I've been waiting for. Alas, I had already bought enough 1TB drives. I wonder what the next step-up will be - 4TB or 5TB.
hopefully this new hdd will perform better then their last black edition. read quite a few reviews where results were pretty dissapointing compared to other similar drives.
by: FreedomEclipseThe only review I've read were the 1Tb Black didn't beat out everybody else was this one, http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/739, and it was only beaten by the new 2 platter Seagate 7200.12.

2tb=pure awesomeness!!
but for $300... no ways...

64-way SLI with 2TB shaders?
Anyhoo, looks nice. Our data needs here at work don't exceed 600GB, so our current backup server (6 x 250GB, RAID-5) is doing fine for now. But if some of our future plans are actualized, then I might be needing some.

by: Weerlol it was a joke and no the next step will be the REAL black drive. and not a RE-X which isnt.

So WD DOES have 500GB platters. When did that come about, all Black series? I'm wondering if the WD5001AALS is single-platter. (Edit: I just read that it isn't, wondering if anyone knows for sure)
 2TB with 64MB cache!!!
:shadedshu $300...

Lord, that's amazing. I'd expect it to be around $200, I think $300 is way too much. WD Black 1TB 32MB Cache ($100) + WD Black 1TB 32MB Cache ($100) = WD Black 2TB 64MB Cache ($200)
by: Soylent JoeOh but ya know, with 64xSLI and 2TB shaders and yada yada yada its epic pw00nage drive it deserves to be costed 5 billion dollars.

Its a the new drive in town beatin by Seagates drives. Expect high prices and mark up.
by: A Cheese DanishMy thoughts exactly.....
 2TB with 64MB cache!!!
:shadedshu $300...
by: Soylent Joethe black should be around 250 or so (cause its one drive less power quiet ect) Its more because its an RE-X drive.

i prefer pay 200$ for 2x1TB BLACK AND PUT IT RAID 0 , and better performance too
by: hayder.masteryep thats wot im on now. plus i dont mind extra power anyway.

Wow 64mb cache is unheard of. Price isnt bad either, especially if it is speedy.
