Micron Launches 1.5 TB microSD Card With Five Year 24/7 Endurance Rating

This week Embedded World 2022 is taking place in Nuremberg in Germany and Micron decided to launch its new i400-series of microSD cards at the show. Normally microSD cards aren't worth a writeup, but in this case there are at least two noticeable features that makes Micron's i400-series of cards stand out. First is the fact that the i400 cards come in sizes from 64 MB to 1.5 TB, which is the largest size microSD card in the market to date. This is according to Micron, enough storage space for up to four months of continuously recorded video from a security camera, albeit at unknown resolution.

This brings us to the second noteworthy feature of the i400-series, the endurance rating. Micron claims that the cards will last five years in a 24/7 write scenario, or 2 million hours mean time to failure. The cards are also said to be optimised for sustained performance, even during concurrent 4K video streams being recorded to the cards. That said, Micron doesn't provide any actual performance numbers beyond the fact that all the cards are Class 10, U3 and A2 rated, except possibly the 64 and 128 GB models that are seemingly also U1 rated. All cards are rated to operate from minus 25 degrees to plus 85 degrees celsius. No word on pricing, as the cards aren't intended for retail customers.

Apacer Announces Industrial Memory Solutions Based on 112-layer BiCS5 Flash

According to research from Mordor Intelligence, the facial recognition market was valued at USD 3.72 billion in 2020, and is projected to be valued at USD 11.62 billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of approximately 21.71% over the forecast period. Facial recognition technology is finally coming into its own. It has gone beyond police officers looking for a suspect on a surveillance camera. Now, smart AI-driven facial recognition technology is common in smart retail, finance, transportation and even healthcare applications. But as adoption spreads, facial recognition devices are being required to operate in ever-more-challenging locations and environments. Keeping all these developments in mind, Apacer developed and has now released the CH120 series of industrial cards powered by the latest 112-layer BiCS5 3D TLC NAND technology, optimized for both AI facial recognition and smart IoT applications.

BiCS5 promises concrete, measurable advantages for SSDs, as it greatly improves capacity while keeping transmission latency ultra-low. In fact, Apacer's A2-grade CH120 series offers 4,000/2,000 IOPS for 4K image read/write performance. And compromised environments won't slow these cards down either - their wide temperature range means they operate smoothly in temperatures as low as -40 and as high as 85 degrees Celsius. The CH120 series of industrial cards are also equipped with value-adding over-provisioning and SLC-liteX technology. The former drastically reduces write amplification, extending an SSD's operational lifespan, while the latter allows an SSD to increase its endurance to up to 30,000 P/E cycles. That's 10 times higher than standard 3D TLC SSDs.

RISC-V Comes to PC: SiFive Introduces HiFive Unmatched Development Board

RISC-V architecture is a relatively new Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) developed at the University of California Berkeley. Starting as a "short, three-month project" the RISC-V ISA is a fifth generation of the Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) ideology. A company working on this technology and helping to grow the ecosystem is SiFive. Today, they announced a big step forward for the ecosystem that will enable developers to make and optimize even more software for this architecture and platform. Called the HiFive Unmatched, the development board represents the first entry of RISC-V ISA to the world of personal computing, with its Mini-ITX form factor and PC-like connectors of power supply and I/O.

The board is home to SiFive's FU740 SoC, a five-core heterogeneous, coherent processor with four SiFive U74 cores, and one SiFive S7 core. This SoC is capable of smooth Linux OS operation, giving the developers a good platform to do their optimizations for. There is 8 GB of onboard DDR4 RAM (unknown frequencies and timing), a MicroSD card slot, and one PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slot for system storage. To connect the board to the outside world, you get one Gigabit Ethernet port. For user I/O there are four USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports (1 Charging port) and one MicroUSB Console port. To power the board, you need a proper power supply with a 24-pin power connector. If you plan to build a PC based on the Unmatched board, you would need a standard ITX case, as it comes in the standard Mini-ITX (170x170 mm) form factor. For more information, please check out SiFive's website.
