Intel Plans 2014 Retirement for Two Desktop and Three Mobile Ivy Bridge CPUs

Intel Corp. has recently revealed the discontinuance schedule for the 3.2 GHz Core i3-3210 and 3.3 GHz i3-3225 desktop CPUs and the 2.6 GHz Core i7-3720QM, 2.7 GHz i7-3820QM and 2.9 GHz i7-3920XM mobile chips. These are all Ivy Bridge-based models and have been introduced between Q2 2012 and Q1 2013. As usual, the reason for discontinuing the chips is market demand, which is shifting towards newer products.

According to Intel's plans, the boxed and tray versions of the processors will continue to be available for order up until March 28th, 2014, and will ship until September 5th, 2014.

Gigabyte Unveils BRIX with Iris Pro 5200 Graphics

At IDF, Gigabyte unveiled its latest BRIX mini-PC variants, running Core i7-4770R and Core i5-4570R processors. The two chips embed Intel's Iris Pro 5200 integrated graphics, which features 40 execution units, L4 eDRAM cache, and more than double the integrated graphics performance of a regular Core i7-4770. Sadly, to accommodate these chips, BRIX needed to stretch out, and is almost double the thickness of 2nd generation BRIX, running regular variants of Core "Haswell" processors. Gigabyte didn't use the added thickness to add more ports, either. You get room for a single 2.5-inch SATA 6 Gb/s drive, and two mini-PCIe gen 2.0 slots, one of which holds the WiFi+Bluetooth card. The BRIX with Iris Pro lineup is expected to start at $500.

Market Availability of Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" Series

Intel's Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" processors are now generally available for purchase, keeping in tune with its September 3rd to 11th launch window. The Core i7-4960X six-core high-end part, which on paper featured a $990 price-tag, is being sold by US retailer Newegg.com for $1,050. The same store is selling the on-paper $555 Core i7-4930K six-core chip for $580, and the catchy on-paper $310 Core i7-4820K quad-core part for $330. If you don't already own an LGA2011 platform, the store is offering decent combo deals, which shave that markup off, when the chips are purchased with compatible socket LGA2011 motherboards. Oh, and the i7-4960X indeed ships in a boring blue box, which totally makes the chip run slower.

Core i7-4960X First Extreme-Tier Intel Chip to Ship in a Blue Box

Reviews of Intel's Core i7-4960X may be all over the web, but each one we came across only pictures the chip itself, and not its retail packaging. It turns out that the i7-4960X will be the first "Extreme" tier Intel processor (well, since the decade-old Pentium 4 Extreme Edition anyway), to ship in a blue box, and not the premium black-colored one that's easy to spot at a store, or on a lengthy list online, should you decide to spend a grand on your next CPU. A Japanese store released these pictures of the Core i7-4960X retail box to Hermitage Akihabara.

The Core i7-4960X is a HEDT (high-end desktop) processor by Intel, in the socket LGA2011 package, and based on the 22 nm "Ivy Bridge-E" silicon. It features six cores, twelve logical CPUs enabled by HyperThreading, 15 MB of L3 cache, a quad-channel DDR3 integrated memory controller, and a 48-lane PCI-Express gen 3.0 certified root complex. It features a clock speed of 3.60 GHz, with 4.00 GHz Turbo Boost frequency. The chip should be supported on any socket LGA2011 motherboard based on the X79 Express and C608 chipsets, with a BIOS update in place; unless one supports it out of the box.

The launch includes the top-end Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition, priced at $990, followed by the Core i7-4930K at $555, and Core i7-4820K at $310. Expect a 10 percent markup across the board for these prices. Of these, the i7-4960X and i7-4930K are six-core parts, while the i7-4820K is quad-core.

The Core i7-4960X features a CPU clock speed of 3.60 GHz, with up to 4.00 GHz Turbo Boost frequency, 15 MB of L3 cache, and HyperThreading, which enables 12 logical CPUs for the OS to deal with. The i7-4930K clocks in at 3.40 GHz, with up to 3.90 GHz Turbo Boost, 12 MB of L3 cache, and HyperThreading. Core i7-4771 Tested, Performs on Par with i7-4770K

It's not just an unlocked base-clock multiplier that separates the Core i7-4770 from the i7-4770K, but also a lower clock speed. The i7-4770 is clocked at 3.40 GHz, with 3.90 GHz maximum Turbo Boost speeds, while the i7-4770K enjoys a higher 3.50 GHz nominal clock speeds. Intel's new Core i7-4771 brings clock speed parity with the i7-4770K, while still lacking the unlocked multiplier. It's expected to eventually replace the i7-4770 from the product stack. VR-Zone scored a sample, and put it through a short battery of tests, that include 7-Zip, AIDA64 ZLib, and wPrime, screenshots of which are posted below, along with a CPU-Z snap. As expected, these numbers look consistent with those of a Core i7-4770K running at its stock speeds.

Intel Broadwell CPU Lineup Arrives in 2H 2014

Intel is expected to unveil its Core "Broadwell" processor family in the second half of 2014. "Broadwell" is an optical shrink of "Haswell" to Intel's new 14 nanometer silicon fab process, with a few tweaks. It's being reported that the "Broadwell" silicon will make it to mobile (notebook) platforms before desktops. Within 2H 2014, a bulk of Intel's Core mobile processor lineup will be based on the silicon, including H-series (for desktop replacements and all-in-one desktops, BGA), U (for Ultrabooks), Y (for tablets), and QM/XM (for mainstream notebooks).

It's the common desktop plaform that's shortchanged by Intel. There won't be socketed Core "Broadwell" CPUs any time in 2014. They'll probably arrive in 2015, they probably won't. Instead, Intel has a "Haswell" platform refresh planned for 2014, which will see Intel roll out speed-bumped Core i5 and Core i7 parts based on existing "Haswell" silicon, and at existing price-points. To compensate, Intel is expected to roll out the Haswell-E HEDT (high-end desktop) platform in 2H 2014, which succeeds the upcoming Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" platform, and introduces DDR4 system memory support.

MacBook Pro with Core "Haswell" Processors Arrive This September

While Apple's MacBook Air got its direly needed hardware upgrade this June, it left its MacBook Pro lineup untouched. The company plans to hold a press event in September, when it plans to unveil its next MacBook Pro lineup. These could include MacBook Pro driven by Core "Haswell" GT3e processors, which feature large integrated graphics cores, featuring 40 execution units, allowing it to do away with discrete GPUs, and improve battery life. A new rumor doing rounds in the tech circles states that Apple could make Intel build-to-order a new class of Haswell GT3e processors with even faster graphics cores than Iris 5200, the graphics core inside today's Core i7-4950HQ.
