Logitec Readies New Ultra-Compact Portable DVD Writer

Logitec (not to be confused with Logitech), is releasing a new series of compact external DVD writer drives, under the LDR-PME8U2V series. Included under this, are red and black colored variants. The unit measures 136.5×143×19.2 mm, weighing around 300 g. Single-layer DVD±R and DVD+RW discs are written at 8x and double-layer discs at 6x. The drive uses just a single USB 2.0 cable for both data and power. It is scheduled to release in Japan soon, priced at ¥9,600 (US $116).

Samsung Announces New SE-S084F External DVD Writer

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, announced today its newest consumer-friendly external DVD writer, the SE-S084F optical disc drive This drive will be available just in time for the holiday season at select online retail outlets.

“Weighing less than one pound and available in five distinct colors, the Samsung SE-S084F DVD Writer was built for netbook and mini PC users, who require the flexibility of a smaller device, but do not want to sacrifice the benefits of an optical disc drive,” said John Suh, director of OMS sales, optical disc drive division for Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. “For ultimate portability, the DVD writer offers customers high-performance reading and writing functions directly from a USB power source, removing the need for an AC adaptor or power cables.”

Pioneer Intros New Blu-ray 3D Ready Internal Burner

Pioneer Japan rolled out the BDR-S06J internal Blu-ray disc writer drive. It is available in three bezel options: white (BDR-S06J-W), piano black (BDR-S06J-BK), and matte black (BDR-S06J-KR). The drive uses the standard SATA interface, and has a 4 MB buffer. It can burn Blu-ray discs at 12X, and has Blu-ray 3D support using PowerDVD. Along with this, it also supports AVCREC DRM (2D or 3D). Scheduled to arrive in November, the drive goes for ¥30,000 (or US $360).

ASUS Readies Slim, Stylish External DVD-Writer Drive

ASUS showed off a new compact external DVD-Writer drive, a yet to be named model that the company refers to as the "Extreme Slim External DVD-RW Drive." The drive is roughly the size of two CD cases, at 14 mm thickness. It is essentially a notebook/slim optical drive inside a sleek, gray brushed-metal enclosure that takes both power and connectivity from its USB 2.0 cable. The unit weighs 320 g. The drive writes DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW at 8x, DVD-RW, double-layer DVD-R/+R at 6x, and DVD-RAM at 5x. CD-R is written at 24x, CD-RW at 16x. ASUS did not give out pricing details, yet.

Pioneer Unveils DVD Writers Supporting Latest Technologies

Pioneer today announced the DVR-S17J series of new internal DVD Writer drives that bring some of the latest technologies to the DVD. The three models differ only in the bezel colors - black for DVR-S17J-BK, silver for DVR-S17J-SV, and white for DVR-S17J-W, respectively. The drive has better writing precision thanks to its Focus and Tracking Servos improvements, and a new actuator. The drive also features PureRead and PowerRead technologies, in addition to Yamaha's LabelFlash technology. It uses the SATA interface. Writing speeds include DVD-R for General Version 2.0/4x, 6x, 8x, 12x and 16 x -speed for DVD-R Revision 1.0/ 2.0/ 3.0/ 5.0/ 6.0(for video and Data) respectively; Dual Layer DVD-R; DVD-RW Version 1.1/ 2x-speed DVD-RW Version 1.0; DVD-RW Version 1.2/ 2x-,4x-and 6x-speed for DVD-RW Revision 1.0/ 2.0/ 3.0 (for Video and Data) respectively; DVD-RAM 2.0,2.1 & 2.2; DVD+R Version 1.2; DVD+R Double Layer Version 1.0; DVD+RW Version 1.2. Optical disc drive specialist Lite-On shipped its internal DVD Writer drives featuring the LabelTag Technology. The Lite-On iHAS524 is touted by the company to be a high-speed burner with speeds of 24x for DVD+R/DVD-R discs, 12x for double-layer DVD+R/DVD-R, 8x for DVD+RW, and 6x for DVD-RW. The center of attraction is its LabelTag Technology, which inscribes labels onto the data-side of single-layer DVDs or CDs. The labeling is quick and easy since it's done while burning the discs. It features the SATA interface, and comes with Nero 8 OEM bundled. It is priced at 49 EUR.

LG Electronics Intros N2R1 NAS with DVD-Burner

LG Electronics introduced a new Network Attached Storage option for consumers looking to protect their multimedia entertainment files, this week at Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) EXPO 2009 (Booth #2623).

To help safeguard treasured family memories, photos and music, LG’s Network Attached Storage (NAS) model N2R1 uses a proven system of multiple hard drives used for sharing and replicating data to prevent possible damage or loss. Called RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Discs), this system automatically backs up and restores files for added security in the event of a hardware failure.

Addronics Intros External Blu-Ray/DVD-RW Combo Drive

Addronics introduced a couple of external optical drives. The two, that look the same, are Blu-Ray/DVD-RW combo, and plain DVD-RW. Not much more than enclosures housing slim notebook drives, the two provide eSATA and USB 2.0 connections to the PC, while needing the USB port at least for power. The unit measures 143 x 135 x 22 mm.

DVD burning speeds offered for are 8x for DVD±R/+RW, 6x for DVD-RW/±R double-layer, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. Backed by a one-year warranty, the Blu-Ray/DVD combo drive is priced at US $235, and the DVD-RW at $99.

LiteOn Announces Slim and Compact eTAU10 External DVD Writer

Optical drives specialist LiteOn is out with the slim and compact eTAU10 external DVD writer. Best suited for netbooks and ultra-slim notebooks without optical drives, the eTAU10 is slimmer than most external slim optical drives, measuring the same as portable CD players, and weighs 350 g. It comes in piano-black and pearl-white (both glossy). USB 2.0 is the almighty connector here, that provides both power and data connection to the host PC. DVD±R and DVD+RW discs are burnt at 8X, double-layer DVD±R at 6X, DVD-RAM at 5X, and 24X for CDs. Priced at 45 Euro, the LiteOn eTAU10 external DVD writer starts selling next month.

Japan-based Logitec (not to be confused with the more popular peripheral company with a similar name), is out with yet another compact external DVD writer. The LDR-PME8U2L is a little over a slim DVD writer enclosed in a fancy casing that comes in complete back or topped with red. It measures 136.5 x 143 x 19.2 mm, and weighs in at around 300 g.

The drive offers write speeds of 8X for DVD±R and 6X for DVD±RW, and 5X for DVD-RAM. It writes and rewrites CDs at 24X. It uses the USB 2.0 interface. ArcSoft's TotalMedia Backup & Record comes bundled. The LDR-PME8U2L drive is backed by a one-year company warranty and is priced at US $92.

Pioneer Unveils Slim and Compact DVR-XD09J Portable DVD Writer

Pioneer rolled out the DVR-XD09J portable DVD writer. It sports a slim cuboid design, and uses a top-loading mechanism like retro portable CD players. It measures 133x133x14.8 mm, and weighs in at 240 g. It relies on USB for both connectivity with the host PC, and power. It burns DVD±R at 8x and DVD±R DL at 6x speeds without requiring any external power other than what USB provides.
It packs CyberLink Power2Go 6, InstantBurn 5, MediaShow 4, and PowerBackup 2. It hits stores in Japan next month.

Lite-On Out With Affordable Blu Ray Drive

Optical drive specialist Lite-On is released a new Blu Ray drive, the iHOS104, which started shipping this week. At US $69.99, the drive provides reading Blu Ray discs at 4x speed, 8x for DVD-ROM, and 32x for CD-ROM. It supports reading known sub-formats of the media. The drive packs 2 MB of cache, and uses a standard SATA interface. It comes with a copy of Cyberlink TrueTheater software.

Toshiba Files Suit for Infringement of its Essential DVD Patents in Federal District

Toshiba Corporation announced today that on May 14, 2009, Toshiba filed suit in the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin against Imation Corp. (“Imation”), several manufacturers and several distributors of recordable DVD media, as a means to prohibit infringement of Toshiba’s DVD patents. Toshiba’s complaint seeks damages for past infringement and requests that the court enjoin the sale, manufacture, and importation into the United States of recordable DVD media by the defendant companies named in the complaint. The infringing recordable DVD media is sold in the United States under at least the Imation and Memorex brand names.

Buffalo Out with New Netbook External DVD Burner

Buffalo today presented the DVSM-PN58U2V DVD writer primarily designed to be used with netbooks. The optical drive is installed in a super slim body with 137x20x142 mm dimensions and weighs only 340 g. Available in black or white, the new recorder can write DVD-R/+R SL and DVD+RW at 8x, DVD-R/+R DL at 6x, DVD-RAM at 5x, and CD-R, CD-RW at 24x. It uses one or two USB ports for connection, depending on the write speed. The Buffalo DVSM-PN58U2V is set to ship in mid-March, and sell for about $85.5.

Sony-Optiarc Preparing 24X DVD Writer

Sony-Optiarc, a subsidiary of Sony, is preparing the new AD-7240S DVD-Writer drive that is built to write DVDs at 24X. The drive rivals Lite-On, which is already out with a drive that burns DVDs this fast. The drive has a standard-sized internal form factor, and uses the SATA interface. It features adaptive self-tuning and burns media at the following speeds: Up to 24X for single-layer DVD-R/+R; 12X for dual-layer DVD-R/+R, DVD-RAM, and DVD-R9; 48X and 32X for CD writing and re-writing respectively. The drive will reach retail by next month.

LaCie Doubles the Burn Speed of Its High-Capacity Blu-ray Drive

LaCie announced that it has doubled the speed at which its high-performance, large-capacity LaCie d2 Blu-ray Drive burns discs to eight times (8x) standard data writing rates.
