Spire Announces NanoTech Bearing Fan Series

Spire is proud to introduce our new fan series with Nano-ceramic precision bearing. Spire fans with Nanobearing offer a more silent, reliable and durable solution for the most demanding situations.

Traditional fans with oil seal bearings have serious wear with a relatively short service life as the bearings can easily overheat which results the impeller jamming and the PCB melting. Fans with nano-ceramic bearings are made from namo-zirconia powder as main material and a collocating special nano-particles lubricant to guarantee an exponentially longer life. The average service life is more than 70,000 hours.

Akasa Unveils Piranha Case Fan

Akasa unveiled its third themed case fan after Viper (which goes into Venom series products) and Apache. Called the Piranha, the new fan design by Akasa relies on a new impeller blade design with teethed edges and broad blade ends, which work to increase air-flow, which can then be traded off for lower speed and lower noise. Akasa initially only has a 120 mm (120 x 120 x 25 mm) model. It supports PWM control, and draws power from standard 4-pin connector. Its cabling is sleeved. The Piranha from Akasa could be sold as unit fan packages, but could also feature in future Akasa products such as CPU coolers, cases, and PSUs.

RotoSub and Noctua Announce Partnership for PC Fans with Noise Cancellation

Noise reduction specialist RotoSub and renowned quiet cooling fan manufacturer Noctua today announced a strategic partnership agreement for the development and commercialisation of PC fans with integrated Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). A first prototype of a Noctua fan with integrated RotoSub ANC technology will be shown at Computex Taipei next week.

Active Noise Cancellation (also referred to as Active Noise Control or Active Noise Reduction, ANC) is the technique of using sound waves to reduce noise by means of an effect called phase cancellation or destructive interference. Lars Strömbäck and Mårten Oretorp from RotoSub have invented a system (RotoSub Active Noise Control, R-ANC) that allows a fan to emit the sound signal that cancels out the original sound of the fan and thereby greatly reduces the overall noise emission.

be quiet! Introduces the SilentWings 2 Fan Series

be quiet!, market leader for PC power supplies in Germany for six straight years, is introducing their innovative new fan series SilentWings 2. With advanced new features such as exchangeable mounting possibilities, be quiet! takes a simple product like the fan to the next level. And with its improved bearing technology, the new SilentWings 2 is going to follow in the steps of and even exceed its hugely successful predecessor in terms of silence.

"It's difficult to improve excellent things"

When be quiet! introduced the original SilentWings PC case fan series almost three years ago, it flew to the top of the 'recommended list' for serious users intent on achieving the ideal balance between silence, cooling performance and fan life. Its performance was so superior that several print and online magazines quickly named it their reference case fan. Of course, it's difficult to improve excellent things, so the pressure was really on the R&D team when it started to work on SilentWings 2. In the end, though, the pressure and hard work paid off, for they have achieved the goal of producing a clearly superior product.

PC CoD Elite No Show: The Backpedal!

Today, we brought you the depressing news that Activision are unlikely to bring the Call of Duty social network called Elite, to the PC platform, despite all their loyal PC gamers, who have bought every iteration of the game going and in particular helped them achieve their blockbuster sales of $400M last week. This delight came courtesy of this tweet:
@thejuggz We are working towards a universal Elite experience but we cannot guarantee if or when a version will be available for the PC.
Well, what do you know, but it looks like Elite is coming to the PC platform after all. Yes, you heard that right. In a tweet a while later, Activision claim to have "misspoken", like this:
We misspoke. Our goal has always been to provide a free PC offering for ELITE. Stay tuned for an update as timing is still being determined.
So PC gamers will at least get the free version. Fantastic. Still second class, but better than nothing. Probably best to keep a close eye on those tweets and a sceptical outlook on this one until it happens. You couldn't make this stuff up.

Noctua Introduces NF-F12 Focused Flow Fan

Noctua today introduced the new NF-F12 120mm Focused Flow fan. Teaming up eleven stator guide vanes with a specially conceived seven blade impeller, the NF-F12’s Focused Flow system creates outstanding static pressure and focuses the airflow for superior performance on heatsinks and radiators. At the same time, a wide range of advanced aerodynamic design measures, second generation SSO-Bearings and Noctua’s new, custom designed PWM IC for fully automatic control guarantee astounding quietness of operation.

"Our award-winning NF-P12 has become a standard choice for pressure demanding applications such as CPU coolers and radiators, but we’ve been striving to achieve even better performance in this domain, and this is how the NF-F12 was born", explains Mag. Roland Mossig, Noctua CEO. "Due to the stator guide vanes focussing the airflow, it can push the air through dense fin stacks more effectively. This type of design has mostly been used for noisy high speed fans so far, so our engineers have put a lot of thought into keeping the noise in check."

Prolimatech Launches Aluminum Vortex Silver Wings 140 mm Fan

Prolimatech is now presenting their latest addition to this segment with the unique Aluminum Vortex Silver Wings, which features Aluminum fan blades and red LEDs.

The main focus of the fan development is to ensure the most efficient cooling of their own CPU coolers. With the Vortex series, the Armageddon, Megahalems and all the other units really shine and manage to deliver the best cooling performance, but are also viable for all other coolers and computer cases in the market.

Mirror's Edge Fans Should Keep Holding Their Breath For The Sequel

Mirror’s Edge received good reviews when it was released and has been quite popular with gamers who unsurprisingly, want a sequel. This is especially important in the case of Mirror’s Edge, as this game is single player only, so it’s not something a gamer can come back to time after time. However, a sequel has never really been on the cards for Electronic Arts, since it didn’t sell as well as they had thought it should have and rejected a prototype ME2. Now, developer DICE have been busy with other projects such as upcoming blockbuster Battlefield 3, but good news could be on the horizon, since Electronic Arts are adamant that Mirror’s Edge is an important brand for their portfolio. SPOnG recently interviewed Patrick Liu from DICE and asked him if he thought that the games market would be receptive to Mirror’s Edge 2. He answered:
Yeah, definitely. I think it’s something that people are ready to get into again. We see that there’s a huge fan following, it’s almost like a cult! And we know what strengths we had, and what weaknesses we had in that game. If we were to release a new game, we’d know what to improve and how to reach a broader audience. So I definitely think there’s a market there.
Good news then for Mirror’s Edge cult members, err, fans, keep holding your breath!
