Zalman Readies SLC Series USB 3.0 Flash Drives

Korean company Zalman added a new segment to its expanding lineup, that of USB 3.0 flash drives, with its new "SLC Series". As the name suggests these flash drives incorporate SLC (single-level cell) NAND flash memory. The drives are available in two capacity options, 16 GB (model: U3M16SLC) and 32 GB (model: U3M32SLC). Taking advantage of the USB 3.0 interface, the drives provide transfer rates of up to 155 MB/s reads, with up to 135 MB/s writes. Measuring 78 x 17 x 8.6 mm (WxDxH), the drives are built in conventional capped form-factor. Slated for an early-June release, the U3M16SLC is priced at 5,480 JPY (US $69), while the U3M32SLC goes for 8,980 JPY (US $113).

Dane-Elec Releases Marvel Avengers-branded USB Flash Drives and Hubs

Elecom Intros MF-MSU3 USB 3.0 Flash Drives

Japanese company Elecom launched the MF-MSU3 line of stylish USB 3.0 flash drives. Available in four color options: black (MF-MSU30xGBK), white (MF-MSU30xGWH), pink (MF-MSU30xGPN), and blue (MF-MSU30xGBU), where "x" is capacity in GB; the drives are available in four capacity options: 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB. The drives offer transfer rates of 60 MB/s (read/write), and feature Elecom PASS (Password Authenticated Security System), an AES-based data encryption software. Measuring 59.0 x 17.5 x 7.8 (WxDxH), these drives weigh about 9 g. The feature the conventional capped form-factor. Elecom did not give out pricing information, but they will be released to market in October.

Green House Intros PicoDrive Micro USB Flash Drives

Japanese company Green House introduced the PicoDrive Micro line of compact USB 2.0 flash drives. When inserted, the drives stick out just 9 mm from the port. These are available in capacities of 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB. Measuring 22.6 x 14.9 x 8.5 mm, weighing 3.1 g. Green House emphasized the term "Ultrabook" in its press-release, indicating that it's the Ultrabook crowd it's trying to woo, although flash drives of this size (or even smaller) aren't entirely new. The 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB variants are priced at 1,480 JPY (US $17.7), 2,980 JPY (US $35.6), and 4,980 JPY (US $59.5), respectively.

The drives use a typical detachable cap design, and measure 18.0 (W) x 69.4 (D) x 7.6 (H) mm, weighing 9 g. The drive is said to run optimally on USB 3.0, though the company did not give out transfer speed figures. It is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. The 8 GB variant is priced at 1880 JPY (US $24.5), the 16 GB at 3280 JPY ($42.75), and 32 GB at 6980 JPY ($91).

Its body is made almost completely of a ridged sheet of metal, which makes it tough, and protects it from the elements. It can also withstand mechanical shocks of up to 1,500 G. The drive uses the older USB 2.0 interface, SLC NAND flash memory, and provides transfer rates of up to 20 MB/s read with 18 MB/s write. With its cap on, the drive measures 47.3 (W) x 17.6 (D) x 8.4 (H) mm, weighing 10 g. The GH-UFI comes in a wide range of capacities, including 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB. While prices weren't announced, we expect the price-per-MB value to get compressed in the lower-capacity models. The drives are backed by a generous 3-year warranty.

Sony Readies Micro Vault P Series Flash Drives

Sony is planning to release the Micro Vault P series USB flash drives in the Asia-Pacific region, later this week. The drives use USB 2.0 for connectivity, and feature capacities of 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. A sturdy body aside, data encryption and data recovery software make for the "Micro Vault" name. The drive is designed to reveal the USB connector without adding to the length of the drive. A 360° LED allows you to monitor drive activity from any side, whichever way the drive is plugged in. Sony's X-Pict Story software comes bundled, which creates automated photo presentations. The drive will be available in black and white variants.

Green House Intros Encryption-Enhanced PicoDrive Secure USB Flash Drives

Japanese company Green House unveiled PicoDrive Secure, a new series of compact USB flash drives that feature 256-bit AES data encryption. Measuring 65 (W) x 19 (D) x 8 (H) mm, and weighing just 11 g, the drives use older USB 2.0 interface. To keep data safe, the drive also features a password-based lock function that lets you switch from no access to read-only access, and full-access. The security comes at a price, however, with the 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB variants being priced at US $160, $230, $300, and $355, respectively.
