Radeon R9 290X Sees Price Cuts

AMD is apparently working with its add-in board manufacturers and retailers to bring down prices of its flagship single-GPU graphics card, the Radeon R9 290X. The card can now be had for as low as $449, non-reference design, factory-overclocked cards starting at a $50 premium. Prices could settle down somewhere between $450 and $500. This closely follows AMD's move to bring down price of its dual-GPU flagship Radeon R9 295X2 by a whopping 34 percent, down to $999, offering performance competitive to the $2999 GeForce GTX TITAN-Z. NVIDIA is preparing two new graphics cards competitive in performance to the Radeon R9 290 series, the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980. The two are based on the company's new 28 nm "GM204" silicon, implementing the "Maxwell" GPU architecture.

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 970 Pictured

Here's the first picture of a ZOTAC-branded GeForce GTX 970 graphics card, the first one shot with its box, confirming the GTX 900 series nomenclature NVIDIA adopted. ZOTAC's card appears to be based on a non-reference PCB, and features a rather compact-looking aluminium fin-stack heatsink, which is ventilated by a pair of 80 mm spinners. The box doesn't flash any "OC" markings, so it's safe to assume that he card runs at its reference clock speeds of 1051 MHz core, 1178 MHz GPU Boost, and 7012 MHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. The card features 4 GB of memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface. Based on the 28 nm "GM204" silicon, the GeForce GTX 970 reportedly features 1,664 CUDA cores, 138 TMUs, and 32 ROPs.

Galaxy GeForce GTX 970 Pictured, Specs Confirmed, Early Benchmarks Surface

Here are some of the first pictures of an AIC partner branded NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 graphics card, the Galaxy GTX 970 GC. Spotted across Chinese PC enthusiast forums and social networks, the latest set of leaks cover not just pictures of what the GTX 970 looks like, but also what's under its hood. To begin with, Galaxy's card appears to be built for the high-end market segment. A meaty twin-fan aluminium fin-stack heatsink, coupled by a spacey backplate cover a signature Galaxy blue PCB, holding NVIDIA's new GTX 970 GPU, and 4 GB of GDDR5 memory. The card appears to feature a high-grade VRM that draws power from a combination of 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe power connectors.

ELSA Announces Single-slot GeForce GTX 750 Ti Graphics Card

ELSA announced the GeForce GTX 750 Ti SP, a single slot, air-cooled graphics card based on NVIDIA's first "Maxwell" based GPU. Sticking to single-slot dimensions, the card is 18.4 cm long, featuring a full-length metal shroud covering a nickel-plated copper channel heatsink, which is ventilated by a 70 mm spinner. The card draws all its power from the PCI-Express 3.0 bus interface. Display outputs include two dual-link DVI, and one mini-HDMI. That's not all, it also comes with a tiny factory-overclock. The core runs at 1045 MHz (vs. 1020 MHz reference), and memory at 4.40 GHz (vs. 4.34 GHz reference). The card will release in the Japanese market first, on the 23rd of September

NVIDIA Files Complaints Against Samsung and Qualcomm for Patent Infringement

NVIDIA today announced that it has filed complaints against Samsung and Qualcomm at the International Trade Commission and in the U.S. District Court in Delaware, alleging that the companies are both infringing NVIDIA GPU patents covering technology including programmable shading, unified shaders and multithreaded parallel processing.

The identified Samsung products include the Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 mobile phones; and the Galaxy Tab S, Galaxy Note Pro and Galaxy Tab 2 computer tablets. Most of these devices incorporate Qualcomm mobile processors -- including the Snapdragon S4, 400, 600, 800, 801 and 805. Others are powered by Samsung Exynos mobile chips, which incorporate ARM's Mali and Imagination Technologies' PowerVR GPU cores.

NVIDIA Tweaking GeForce GTX 770 Price to Compete with R9 285

NVIDIA's response to AMD Radeon R9 285 isn't major (a new product launch). The company believes it already has the products out there to take on it. The company is likely working with add-in card partners, and retailers, to tweak pricing of its performance-segment GeForce GTX 770 2GB, bringing its price around the US $275 mark, $25 more than the cheapest R9 285, and roughly the same price as factory-overclocked ones. Its pricing is down from the $325 point it was hovering over.

The GTX 770 costs roughly the same as the GTX 760, for NVIDIA to sell, with the former only imposing slightly higher VRM requirements. Our tests show that the GTX 770 still ends up with better energy efficiency figures than the R9 285. Based on the 28 nm "GK104" silicon, the GTX 770 packs 1,536 CUDA cores, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface.

Lenovo Announces New ERAZER X315 Gaming PC and Y70 Touch Notebook

Lenovo today announced at the 2014 IFA Consumer Electronics Unlimited show in Berlin an expanded portfolio of tablets and PCs that gives consumers more options for tablets that fit their mobile lifestyle as well as choices of dedicated gaming PCs. The new lineup kicks off with the TAB S8, Lenovo's first Intel-powered Android tablet. Lenovo also announced two new high-performance gaming PCs: the Y70 Touch, Lenovo's first 17-inch touch laptop with the latest processor and graphics technology for HD gaming, and the ERAZER X315, Lenovo's latest affordable desktop gaming PCs.

AMD Announces the Radeon R9 285 Performance Graphics Processor

AMD announced its most important GPU for the season, the Radeon R9 285. The chip is designed to compete with the GeForce GTX 760 from NVIDIA at not just performance, but also energy-efficiency, and low component costs, so AMD can price it better. Based on a brand new 28 nm silicon by the company, codenamed "Tonga," the R9 285 features 1,792 Graphics CoreNext 1.2 stream processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 2 GB of memory.

AMD partners are free to come up with 4 GB variants. The card supports DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.4, and Mantle. It features new AMD innovations, such as XDMA CrossFire, TrueAudio DSP, and 4-display Eyefinity by plugging into every connector on the card (two dual-link DVI, one DisplayPort 1.2, and one HDMI 1.4a). The card draws power from a pair of 6-pin PCIe power connectors. Available now, the Radeon R9 285, from various AMD partners starts at US $249.

NVIDIA Announces Game24, Massive 24-hour Celebration of PC Gaming

NVIDIA announced Game24, a worldwide, multinational event spanning 24 hours, celebrating PC gaming. Scheduled for 18th September, 2014, The event will be held across seven locations around the world, and live-streams of each will be broadcast the world over. NVIDIA didn't put out specifics about the event, but we're guessing it will be full of game developer interactions (with the gamers), multiplayer gaming events on NVIDIA-powered gaming PCs, and the odd next-generation high-end GPU launch (GeForce GTX 980, GTX 970). MSI TwinFrozr V Cooling Solution Teased

MSI teased the first CGI sketches of its next-generation TwinFrozr V cooling solution, designed for high-end GPUs, under its Gaming Series. A prototype of the cooler made its first appearance at Computex 2014, in June. The cooler features a large dual-stack aluminium fin heatsink to which heat drawn from the GPU is fed by five 8 mm thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes. The fin-stack is ventilated by a pair of what's now appearing to be two 100 mm fans. MSI is rumored to be innovating a new impeller design that steps up air-flow to noise ratio.

It's interesting to note that in its CGI render of a card equipped with this cooler, MSI showed a PCB with two NVIDIA SLI bridge fingers, and two 6-pin PCIe power inputs. Could this be the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980, in effect making the card the MSI GTX 980 Gaming OC? Wait until the 19th of September to find out. GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 are NVIDIA's next high-end GPUs, based on the 28 nm "GM204" silicon, derived from the company's new "Maxwell" architecture.

NVIDIA Cuts GeForce GTX TITAN-Z Price by 37 Percent, But for OEMs Only

With a price-tag of US $2,999, the GeForce GTX TITAN-Z from NVIDIA is the most expensive consumer graphics card in recent times. You needn't be a Vulcan to tell that it's overpriced by a lot, and that NVIDIA is selling these cards at a gargantuan margin. In a bid to see more system builders sell the card to their high-paying customers, NVIDIA cut prices of the card, by as much as 37 percent. An OEM partner will now be able to source a GTX TITAN-Z from NVIDIA for as less as $1,830. What they do with the cards - such as charging the full $2,999 for the option, is their business. DIY users will still have to cough up three grand for one of these illogical cards.

NVIDIA to Pole-vault GTX 800 Series, Name its Next Big Parts GTX 970 and GTX 980

NVIDIA is expected to brand-name its next GeForce GTX desktop discrete GPU lineup under the GTX 900 series, and not the previously thought about GTX 800. In what is a similar brand-name pole-vault to the GTX 300 series ahead of "Fermi," NVIDIA's next high-end discrete GPUs will be named GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980. The brand name could be devised to not just look better on paper, but give users of current-generation GTX 770 and GTX 780 an upgrade-itch, something which could have been difficult if NVIDIA named it under the GTX 800 series, unless its new parts were phenomenally faster.

The GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980 will be based on NVIDIA's new "GM204" silicon, derived from its new "Maxwell" GPU architecture, which debuted with the mid-range GeForce GTX 750 Ti. NVIDIA is expected to outline the two cards on the 9th or 10th of September, 2014, at various media events held around the world. The company is expected to formally launch the two on 19th September. VMware, NVIDIA and Google Enabling Graphics-Rich Applications on Chromebooks

Graphics Add-In Board Market Down in Q2, NVIDIA Holds Market Share Lead

Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, announced estimated graphics add-in-board (AIB) shipments and suppliers' market share for 2014 2Q.

JPR found that AIB shipments during Q2 2014 behaved according to past years with regard to seasonality, but the decrease was more than the 10-year average. The news was disappointing, quarter-to-quarter, the market dropped 17.5 % (compared to the desktop PC market, which increased 1.3%).
  • Total AIB shipments decreased this quarter to 11.5 million units from last quarter.
  • AMD's quarter-to-quarter total desktop AIB unit shipments decreased 10.7%.
  • Nvidia's quarter-to-quarter unit shipments decreased 21%.
  • Nvidia continues to hold a dominant market share position at 62%.
  • Figures for the other suppliers were flat to declining.

AMD Radeon R9 285 Clock Speeds and Pricing Revealed

It's confirmed the GeForce GTX 760 really is on AMD's crosshair's with the Radeon R9 285. Based on the 28 nm "Tonga" silicon, which is designed to offer "Tahiti" like performance at the energy-efficiency levels comparable to NVIDIA's GK104, the R9 285 features 1,792 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 2 GB or 4 GB of memory. The card will feature clock speeds of 918 MHz core, 5.50 GHz memory. AMD claims the R9 285 will be up to 15 percent faster than the GeForce GTX 760. It will start at US $249, with partners coming out with custom-designs on day-one (September 2nd, 2014).

AMD Radeon R9 285 Launch Date Revealed

AMD is set to launch its new performance-segment graphics card, the Radeon R9 285, on the 2nd September, 2014. Ahead of its launch, the company is expected to tease the card at its August 23rd press-event, celebrating 30 years of graphics and gaming. On that day, AMD will share "partial" details of the card.

The R9 285 is based on AMD's swanky new 28 nm "Tonga" silicon, which is being drummed up to be AMD's best answer to NVIDIA's GK104. The chip offers performance rivaling "Tahiti," at the power consumption of GK104. The R9 285 is being designed to offer performance roughly that of the Radeon R9 280, at energy-efficiency, and pricing to drop lead on NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 760. A month later, presumably in early October, the company plans to launch the faster R9 285X, offering performance comparable (if not higher than) the R9 280X, at the energy-efficiency levels of GTX 770. "Tonga" physically features 2,048 Graphics CoreNext 1.1 stream processors, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, which will hold 2 GB or 4 GB of memory.

JPR Reports AMD Jumps 11% in GPU Shipments in Q2, Intel up 4%, NVIDIA Slips

Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, announced estimated graphics chip shipments and suppliers' market share for 2014 2Q.

It features core clock speeds of 797 MHz, and memory clock speeds of 1600 MHz DDR. Most cards based on this chip are expected to be single-slot, half-height, and passively cooled. NVIDIA is capturing the sub-$50 market with this chip.
