Radeon R9 290 Performance Figures Leaked, Beats GTX 780

If these performance numbers posted by credible reviewers at OCUK hold up, then AMD could have a second, more affordable graphics card for you, which outperforms NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 780, at least in synthetic benchmarks. In a brief performance run that spans synthetic tests, which included Unigine Heaven 3.0 at 1080p and 1440p resolutions, with normal level of tessellation; 3DMark 11 (performance preset) and 3DMark Fire Strike (both Normal and Extreme); the card we believe to be R9 290 (name blurred out in the graphs) is consistently faster than the GeForce GTX 780 reference, in the same bench.

Based on the same 28 nm "Hawaii" silicon as the Radeon R9 290X, the R9 290 is its more affordable sibling, featuring 2,560 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, 160 TMUs, 64 ROPs, and a 512-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 4 GB of memory. It features clock speeds of 947 MHz (core), and 5.00 GHz (memory, GDDR5-effective). There's no word on pricing, but it could be available from the 31st of October, 2013.

On the Clock with Parvum Systems

The modding and custom water cooling scene has never been a particularly stable or reliable medium to build a business in and around of, with its intrinsically superfluous character making it a particularly risky bet for a start-up of any sort, and indeed a losing bet for very many of those who did bite the bullet, invested the money and delivered the goods, but failed to capitalize on what can best be described as a frivolous demand. A multitude of brands with a wide variety of products have come and gone, while some of those still on the scene are slowly fading into irrelevance, all of whom failed to correctly grasp the nature of that demand.

Thankfully, all is not gloom, this is a vibrant scene I'm talking about, with many household names that have been around for many many years, and some quite new ones also, doing very well and in some instances thriving. All of whom brought and bring to market products that not only meet existing demand, but primarily come to generate it. While generally a low volume market, the sheer variety of products is quite overwhelming, from completely over the top contraptions such as the Aqua Computer GIGANT radiators or the obscenely expensive, functional artwork boasting the Murderbox branding, to grotesquely designed and executed kitsch that will remain unnamed, in-between you'll find anything meeting every taste or budget. And from this busy, vibrant and idiosyncratic scene a new player by the name or Parvum Systems is looking to carve a piece for itself.

KFA2 GeForce GTX 680 Hall of Fame Edition Listed

Here are the first pictures of KFA2 GeForce GTX 680 Hall of Fame (HOF) Edition, an exclusive to markets KFA2, Galaxy's Europe brand, has a presence in. British retailer Overclockers UK listed the card for pre-order, it goes for £529.99, including VAT (US $854). The card features non-reference PCB and cooling assembly, its PCB dons a white color, which sets it apart from every other GTX 680 graphics card. The GeForce GTX 680 GPU is accompanied by 2 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface. The GPU is overclocked out of the box, with base core speed of 1202 MHz, boost core speed of 1267 MHz, and memory speed of 1502 MHz (6008 MHz GDDR5 effective).

The PCB implements bleeding-edge voltage regulation circuitry, that includes CPL-made single-phase chokes, International Rectifier DirectFET, and tantalum capacitors - stuff that's fit for avionics. The VRM is make up of an 8+2+2 phase circuit. The card draws power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. A Galaxy GX31 custom controller governs the VRM, providing software voltage control, voltage monitoring and power draw monitoring over SMBUS. The cooling solution is Galaxy's proven triple-fan cooler, which has been used on older Galaxy/KFA2 graphics cards. The cooler utilizes a long aluminum fin array, to which heat is conveyed by several copper heat pipes. It is then ventilated by three 90 mm LED-lit fans. Display outputs include one standard-sized DisplayPort, and three mini-DisplayPort connectors. According to OCUK, the KFA2 GTX 680 HOF Edition will start shipping on May 11.

Caseking.de Acquires Overclockers UK

One of Europe's biggest retailers of enthusiast PC parts, Caseking.de, has reportedly struck a deal that will see it take over Overclockers UK (OCUK). OCUK has been among Britain's biggest retailers of interest to PC enthusiasts, dealing with performance computer hardware apart from enthusiast parts (cooling, casing, accessories, etc.). This takeover will affect 40 members of staff at OCUK. The value of the final deal has not been disclosed by either side. eTeknix estimates it to be "less than €50 million". The Caseking staff we contacted refused to comment, saying they cannot comment on such internal operations. The deal is said to have been struck in early February, though both companies are keeping mum about it, perhaps waiting for the right moment to make the big announcement.
