AMD FX-9000 Series Processors Available For Pre-Order

On Friday, we published and commented on The Tech Report's FX-9000 insight and findings from their interview with an unnamed AMD official, among which was the undecided or improbable retail availability of the new processors. Today, the exact same two processors which made the object of AMD's Friday disclosure are available for pre-order from online retailers such as PCSuperStore, and while speculation on the causes or reasons of the apparent misinformation might be expected and could even be interesting, I will spare you the usual AMD bash and just point out the prices of these two new AMD processors, $ 960 for the FX-9590 and $ 576 for the FX-9370, vexing, to be blunt. Unless we're dealing with circumstantial speculation by a retailer (not unheard of), these prices would put the two new CPUs in direct competition with Intel's Core i7 Extreme processors, very unlikely targets for AMD's Vishera chips. We'll know soon enough, with retail availability imminent, it shouldn't be long before benchmark scores and charts start surfacing.

Ivy Bridge-EP Based Xeon E5 Processors Specifications Leaked

AsRock, the renowned motherboard manufacturer, earlier today updated the CPU Support List for its LGA 2011 platform products with Intel's next generation Xeon E5 processors, using Ivy Bridge-EP silicon and scheduled for launch in Q3 this year. Along with the part number list, specifications such as clock frequency, cache size and TDP value were made public as well. Information from which we can deduce that the new chips will come in three core count versions, specifically 8 core, 10 core and 12 core parts. TDP ranges from 70 W for the E5-2650L v2, a 10 core chip running at 1.7 Ghz, to 150 W for the E5-2687W v2, also a 10 core chip but running at 3.4 Ghz.

AMD Reveals Additional Details Regarding Its FX-9000 Series Processors

It appears that the recently announced FX-9590 and FX-9370 processors will be available through system integrators only, with no plans for retail at this time. In a discussion with the folks at The Tech Report, an unnamed AMD source was quoted saying the two new processors will be "available from system integrators globally beginning this summer," while adding that "AMD is considering all options" when asked about retail. During the same discussion the rumored "~220W" TDP was confirmed, which could hint to the reason why these chips might not see retail, requiring advanced cooling solutions, expensive and difficult to integrate into a typical retail package. The discussion also revealed the base clocks of both chips, in the FX-9370's case it being 4.4 Ghz while the FX-9590 boasting a base clock of 4.7 Ghz, in both cases Turbo Boost upping the clocks by 300 Mhz, to 4.7 Ghz and 5 Ghz, respectively.

Intel Intros Core i5-3439Y and Core i7-3689Y Dual-Core Processors with 13W TDP

Intel introduced a pair of new dual-core ultra-low voltage processors, the Core i5-3439Y and Core i7-3689Y, based on the current 22 nm "Ivy Bridge" architecture. The two feature a stunning 13W TDP, and are designed for cool Ultrabooks, with minimal cooling. The Core i5-3439Y features a nominal clock speed of 1.50 GHz, with 2.30 GHz maximum Turbo Boost, HyperThreading enabling four logical CPUs, 3 MB of L3 cache, and an SDP (scenario driven power) of just 7W. It is priced at US $250. The Core i7-3689Y, on the other side, features the same 1.50 GHz nominal clock speed, but a higher maximum Turbo Boost frequency of 2.60 GHz, and 4 MB of L3 cache. Other features are identical between the two. The i7-3689Y is priced at $362.

AMD Announces Opteron 4300 and 3300 Series Processors

AMD today unveiled nine new mid-range and entry-level AMD Opteron 4300 Series and 3300 Series server processors increasing performance per watt versus the previous generation to maximize compute capabilities in power-constrained environments1, while delivering outstanding value to cloud providers and web hosts. The AMD Opteron 3300 Series processors provide enterprise-class features in a low power envelope at a desktop processor price, making it ideal for web hosts and small- and medium-sized businesses.

The AMD Opteron 4300 Series processors offer up to 15 percent better performance versus the prior generation, based on SPECint benchmark results2. And SPECpower results show up to a 24 percent improvement in performance per watt. As with the AMD Opteron 6300 Series processors, these are socket compatible with the previous generation processor, providing an effortless upgrade path for customers.

Haswell-ULT Processors Could Use 24 MHz BClk, New C-States, and MCM to Cut Power Draw

Going into 2013, Intel's tough balancing act between keeping a low power/thermal envelope, and advancing performance, all while staying on the 22 nm silicon fab process, will be care of its Core "Haswell-ULT" processor. The chip will feature some radical changes to traditional Intel processor design, which will help it achieve its design goals. According to a deck of leaked slides scored by Expreview, Intel plans to use additional C-states that drop the processor's base clock, and redesign the processor package to accommodate the PCH silicon, reducing the board footprint.

To begin with, Haswell-ULT will be designed to support 24 MHz base clock speed, which running in "deep" energy-saving idle states. Modern processors with FSB replacement interconnect technologies such as QuickPath Interconnect and HyperTransport need a base clock to time other components on the processor, and for low-level communications, while a bulk of the data is transported by the primary interconnect. Intel found a way to turn off the 100 MHz base clock signal (which is also used to time the PCI-Express root complex and integrated graphics core), and replace it with a 24 MHz clock, when the processor is idling. As the processor returns to lower (more active) C-states, the 100 MHz base clock is reapplied. The 24 MHz base clock is activated by three new power states, C8, C9, and C10, introduced by Haswell-ULT. The third slide below details what happens to the various components in the new C-states.

ARM Launches Cortex-A50 Series, the World's Most Energy-Efficient 64-bit Processors

ARM announced the new ARM Cortex-A50 processor series based upon the ARMv8 architecture, extending ARM's leadership in performance and low power. The series initially includes the Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A57 processors and introduces a new, energy-efficient 64-bit processing technology, as well as extending existing 32-bit processing. The scalability of the processor series enables ARM partners to create system-on-chips (SoCs) that address diverse markets, from smartphones through to high-performance servers.

The processors launched today will continue the evolution of the mobile computing experience by delivering up to three times the performance of today's superphones and extending today's superphone experience to entry-level smartphones. With a comprehensive set of ARM and ARM partner development tools and simulation models already available to enable faster and easier software development, both processors are fully compatible with the extensive ARM 32-bit ecosystem and integral to the rapidly evolving ARM 64-bit ecosystem.

Intel Outlines Retirement Plan for Multiple Core Processors

Intel has this week revealed the discontinuance schedule for a lot of its older, 32 nm processors, including the Celeron G440 and the Core i5-2310, i5-2320, i5-2400, i5-2400S, i5-2405S, i5-2500, i5-2500K, i5-2500S, i5-2500T, i7-2600, i7-2600K, i7-2600S and i7-2700K. Interestingly enough, there's also a 22 nm chip on the black list, the 3.1 GHz Core i5-3450 which was released just last quarter.

All the CPUs listed are set to be available for orders until March 29, 2013, and will continue to ship while supplies last (for the boxed versions) or until September 27, 2013 (for the tray versions).

Intel: Low-Power Processors to Fuel Future of Mobile Computing Innovation

Intel Corporation's chief product officer today described how its low-power processors, starting with the company's 4th generation Intel Core processor family available next year, will set a new standard for mobile computing experiences and innovative Ultrabook, convertible and tablet designs.

Speaking at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, David (Dadi) Perlmutter said Intel reduced the platform idle power of its 4th generation Intel Core processor family based on the next-generation "Haswell" microarchitecture by more than 20 times over the 2nd generation while delivering outstanding performance and responsiveness. He also said Intel will add a new line of even lower-power processors based on the same microarchitecture to its roadmap starting in 2013.

AMD Readies Trio of Athlon II X4 Processors in FM2 Package

Even as launch of the next-generation A-Series "Trinity" desktop APUs remains elusive, there is already talk of what AMD will do with the 32 nm Trinity silicon, apart from using them in the A-Series. Some theories point out that the best performing parts could be sold in certain "high margin" products, while the others, could be branded as Athlon II FM2. AMD is planning a trio of quad-core Athlon II X4 processors in the socket FM2 package. The company currently has a line of Athlon II series processors carved out of the "Llano" silicon, built in the socket FM1 package.

The trio of socket FM2 Athlon II X4 processors include:
  • Athlon II X4-730: quad-core, 2.80 GHz, 4 MB total cache, 65W TDP
  • Athlon II X4-740: quad-core, 3.20 GHz, 4 MB total cache, 65W TDP

Intel Xeon Processors E5 Achieve Fastest Adoption, Announcing Xeon Phi Co-Processors

The Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 product family reached a new supercomputing milestone as the fastest adopted new processing technology to power 44 systems, including 3 Petascale-class supercomputers on the 39th edition of the Top500 list announced today.

The "SuperMUC" supercomputer at LRZ in Germany, which ranked fourth on the list, delivers 2.9 PetaFLOPs of performance, making it the most powerful in Europe, as well as the largest installation based on the new Intel Xeon processors E5 family.

Intel "Ivy Bridge" Core i3 Processors Start Shipping Ten Days From Now

Intel's Taiwan office quashed media reports of its Core i3 "Ivy Bridge" processor being launched in August, stating that the new 22 nm mainstream chips are on course for a June 24 launch. The company also reiterated that the targets Intel set for the proliferation of Ultrabook by the end of 2012, that of 40 percent of consumer notebook market consisting of Ultrabook, hasn't changed. Intel's 22 nm Core i3 processor could play a key role in that, since it facilitates cheaper Ultrabook designs. The Core i3 "Ivy Bridge" family consists of value dual-core parts based on Intel's newest processor architecture.

Latest HP ProLiant Gen8 Servers Integrate New AMD Opteron Processors

Today AMD announced 11 servers from its customers, including two based on the new HP ProLiant Gen8 platform, will be integrating previously unannounced versions of the award-winning high-performance AMD Opteron 6200 Series processor and the low-power AMD Opteron 4200 Series processor. These servers are based on five new AMD Opteron processors that offer increased performance without an increase in power consumption, providing customers more choice in using the world’s best price/performance x86 server processor.

Last month, HP launched two HP ProLiant Gen8 servers using the new AMD Opteron processors and plans to refresh the ProLiant DL585 G7 and the BL685c G7 later this year. Moreover, Dell is also expected to refresh its AMD offering with the latest AMD Opteron processors in the PowerEdge C6145, C6105, R415, R515, R715, R815 and the M915.

Production of AMD "Piledriver" FX Processors Begin Q3 2012

Production of AMD's next-generation FX processor family, which are based on its "Piledriver" microarchitecture, will commence in Q3 2012, according to industry sources. Some of the first client processor models based on the "Vishera" silicon, will be the eight-core FX-8350, six-core FX-6300, and quad-core FX-4320. The three model names were earlier misinterpreted with an "x" prefix from a roadmap slide.

A few more details are known about these chips. For starters, the chips will be built on the existing AM3+ package, retaining compatibility with current AM3+ platforms. The chips will also retain dual-channel DDR3-1866 MHz integrated memory controllers, and Turbo Core 2.0. The main differences here, are increases in IPC (performance to clock-speed ratio), and the implementation of resonant clock mesh technology, which increases energy efficiency.Source: DonanimHaber

NEC Refreshes Lavie and ValueStar Models with Ivy Bridge Core Processors

NEC Japan updated the system configurations of two its ValueStar desktop and Lavie notebook models, the ValueStar L Series, and the Lavia L Series. The new ValueStar L is a conventional desktop, which is powered by Intel Core i7-3770S quad-core processor clocked at 3.10 GHz, with 8 GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory, and GeForce GT 435 graphics. Its storage subsystem includes a 2 TB hard drive. A 23-inch full-HD (1920x1080) monitor comes included.

The Lavie L Series, on the other hand, is a 15.6-incher powered by Intel Core i7-3610QM quad-core processor (2.30 GHz with 3.30 GHz Turbo Boost), 8 GB dual-channel DDR3 memory, and Intel HD Graphics. With storage, in packs a 1 TB hard drive, and a Blu-ray XL writer drive. Its 15.6-inch screen packs a resolution of 1366x768 pixels. A digital TV tuner module comes optional. Prices vary with configuration.

Broadcom Introduces Industry's First 100 Gbps Full Duplex Network Processor

In 2012, the number of connected devices is set to exceed the world's population with an estimated 7 billion devices connected to the network(1). Intel Plans Low Power Xeon Processors for Micro-Servers This Quarter, Centerton in 2H

Intel is planning to launch a line of low-power Xeon processors in Q2-2012, which will be the company's first Xeon processors built on the 22 nm fab process, with 3D transistors. It is quite likely that these chips are built in the LGA1155 package, however Intel is only releasing low-power variants, which ensures performance-segment Xeon E3-1200 family isn't disturbed, and more importantly, it doesn't have to pull out the best bins of its 22 nm Ivy Bridge silicon just yet (for use in higher clock-speed Xeon parts).

Intel has another emerging problem. With the advent of "micro-servers" (low power independent servers in high-density data-centers, which provide better cost-performance and manageability than virtual servers), ARM processor architecture is making inroads to the enterprise computing market. Intel's answer to that is refining the same silicon that goes into making low-power Atom processors, and making it enterprise-grade. This part is codenamed "Centerton", and Intel expects an entire micro-server platform based on these chips to be out in the second half of 2012.

Definitive Retail Launch Date for Ivy Bridge Core Processors Surfaces

While we're fairly certain about the launch-schedule of Intel's "Ivy Bridge" Core processor family and 7-series chipset from an older article, which pin-points at April 29 to be the day full-fledged reviews (including overclocking performance, and benchmarks that cover new features) can be published, there's still a looming doubt over that day being the one on which you could buy say, a Core i7-3770K off Newegg.com. A latest slide, probably sourced from Intel's Retailedge, lays that doubt to rest. April 29 is indeed the day you will be able to buy most significant "Ivy Bridge" Core i7 and Core i5 models. Certain other models are slated for June 3. Dual-core Core i3 and Pentium processors based on Ivy Bridge silicon are slated for "Holiday". As on April 29, you also be able to buy motherboards based on 7-series chipset, which support Ivy Bridge processors out of the box.
