ASUS Readies ROG ARES 2 Graphics Card with Dual-HD 7870 GPUs

ASUS is working on its second Republic of Gamers (ROG) ARES graphics card, the ARES 2 dual-HD 7870. Its first ARES was dual-HD 5870. ASUS' decision to go with a pair of Radeon HD 7870 GPUs, instead of the premium HD 7970, certainly comes as a surprise. With it, one could deduce the target market-segment ASUS is aiming at: US $650-750, providing a solution that outperforms even the fastest HD 7970 GHz Edition and GTX 680 graphics cards, while being cheaper than Radeon HD 7990 (which is MIA), dual-HD 7970 X2, and of course, the GTX 690.

ASUS ARES 2 will back two 28 nm "Pitcairn" GPUs with all components unlocked; likely factory-overclocked speeds beyond those of the HD 7870 GHz Edition; and a total of 4 GB of GDDR5 memory (2 GB per GPU system). The card will draw power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors, and will have a TDP of around 300W. It will take advantage of AMD ZeroCore CrossFire, with which it powers down the second GPU when not gaming, or with light 3D loads that the first GPU can munch on. With the monitor idling for a set amount of time, both GPUs power down. It's likely that ASUS will use a triple-slot cooling solution, despite the fact that the HD 7870 is a generally cool GPU. VTX3D Also Displays HD 7870 X-Edition

The second new factory-overclocked graphics card to be shown by VTX3D at Computex, is the HD 7870 X-Edition. Unlike the HD 7770 X-Edition detailed earlier, the HD 7870 X-Edition comes with true non-reference PCB and cooler designs. The cooler appears similar to the one PowerColor (a sibling brand of VTX3D) used on the HD 7870 Eyefinity6. The card comes with out of the box clock speeds of 1100 MHz core, and 1225 MHz (4.90 GHz effective) memory, against reference clock speeds of 1000 MHz core, and 1200 MHz (4.80 GHz effective) memory. Based on the 28 nm "Pitcairn" silicon, the HD 7870 packs 1280 stream processors, and holds 2 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface.

Zalman to Launch its First GeForce, New Radeon Graphics Cards at Computex

Zalman entered the graphics card business in late 2011, by introducing its first products in the category, all of which are based on AMD Radeon GPUs. At Computex 2012, the Korean PC enthusiast components maker plans to launch its first GeForce graphics cards, along with a few new performance-thru-mainstream Radeon HD 7000 series parts. Among the GeForce parts launched Computex, are an NVIDIA reference design GeForce GTX 670 model, and custom-design GeForce GTX 550 Ti and GeForce GTX 560 Ti graphics cards. These parts appear to be using custom PCB designs, and Zalman's very own Z-Machine GV1000 GPU cooling solutions.

Among the new Radeon HD 7000 series graphics cards slated for Computex, are the already-unveiled VF3000-cooled HD 7950, a VF3000-cooled Radeon HD 7870, a GV1000-cooled Radeon HD 7850, a VF1000-cooled Radeon HD 7770, and a VF900-cooled Radeon HD 7750. All five Radeon parts use custom PCB designs that are colored Zalman's signature shade of blue.

MSI Radeon HD 7870 HAWK Edition Pictured

MSI is working on a bleeding-edge Radeon HD 7870 graphics card that is both factory-overclocked, and has room for more overclocking. Called the MSI R7870 HAWK, pictured below, the card uses custom-design PCB and cooling by MSI. The PCB is augmented with a revamped VRM that takes advantage of MSI's GPU Reactor module (which conditions power), the PCB also features consolidated voltage measurement points. It draws power from two 6-pin PCIe power connectors. The cooler is MSI's TwinFrozr 4, similar in design to the one featured on R7970 Lightning, albeit slightly smaller, and with less-loud dash of blue color. Although not specifically known, the card is expected to come with factory overclocked speeds, with additional overclocking headroom. More details are awaited.

AMD Finalizes Radeon HD 7900, HD 7700 Series Price Cuts, Bigger Than Expected

AMD reportedly finalized the adjusted prices. The price cuts were first reported in a little earlier this month. The price of Radeon HD 7970 was slashed by as much as US $70, sending it down to $479, $20 behind that of the GeForce GTX 680. That of the Radeon HD 7950 was cut by $50, which will send its price down to $399. Lastly, the price of Radeon HD 7770 went down by $20, it is priced at $139. Although not formally part of these price cuts, the Radeon HD 7870 is now available for as low as $330.

Second Wave of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 600 Products Due For May

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680 literally kicked the door open as it made its entry. We're learning of NVIDIA's plans to milk the GK104 chip by carving out two more SKUs: the GeForce GTX 670 Ti, and GTX 670. These two SKUs will let NVIDIA capture price points deep within the $400-499 and $300-399 ranges, to compete with AMD's Radeon HD 7950 and Radeon HD 7870. These two SKUs will be released in May. Around the May-June time-range, NVIDIA could also introduce the GTX 690, which we're hearing is a dual-GK104 graphics card that's designed to compete with Radeon HD 7990, which launches in April.

Also in May, NVIDIA will launch desktop discrete graphics card SKUs based on the GK107 chip, which makes up its GeForce GT 650M/640M mobile graphics SKUs. Following this, some time in Summer, NVIDIA will release a new chip, the GK106, which will make up the GeForce GTX 660, which will be out to compete with Radeon HD 7850, and HD 7700 series. It looks like NVIDIA is waiting on current inventories of GF114-based SKUs to get digested, including those of the recently-launched GeForce GTX 560 SE, and is hence in no hurry to launch a new GPU to capture the sub-$250 price-points. TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.6.0 Released

TechPowerUp released the latest version of GPU-Z, the PC enthusiast community's favorite graphics subsystem information and diagnostic utility, which gives you up to date information about your installed graphics hardware, and helps you monitor clock speeds, voltages, temperatures, and even exotic readings such as video memory usage and ASIC quality (on supported graphics cards). Version 0.6.0 introduces a host of new features, including refined support for upcoming NVIDIA Kepler architecture GPUs, such as GeForce GTX 680, and GeForce GT 6x0M; and the recently-launched AMD Radeon HD 7800 series.

GPU-Z also embraces an installer, which places shortcuts, and an uninstall entry. GPU-Z can very much also be used as a portable, standalone utility, without needing an installation (just choose not to install, and use it standalone instead). AMD altered a high-level API with its Catalyst 12.2 drivers, which GPU-Z conventionally uses to talk to the hardware. Those updating from older Catalyst versions to 12.2 won't see its effects on older GPU-Z versions, but those with Catalyst 12.2 "clean-installed", might. GPU-Z 0.6.0 addresses this issue, and should now work normally with systems running Catalyst 12.2 clean-installed. A large number of other changes were made with version 0.6.0.

AMD Launches Graphics Triple Play: 3 GPUs in 3 Months, Availability of HD 7800 Series

HIS Announces its Radeon HD 7800 Series Graphics Cards, Including Three IceQ X Models

Dutch add-in board maker Club 3D has joined the Radeon HD 7800 party too by announcing not two but four cards powered by the Pitcairn 28 nm GPU. XFX Radeon HD 7800 Double Dissipation Graphics Card Announced

XFX announced its Radeon HD 7870 Double Dissipation graphics card. The card features the same large-version of the company's Double Dissipation cooling assembly that's also featured on some of its Radeon HD 7900 series products, making it a monster overclocker. The Double Dissipation cooler uses an aluminum fin stack to which heat is conveyed by copper heat-pipes, which draw heat directly from the GPU die. The fin-stack is then ventilated by two "GHOST" fans, which are whisper-quiet. The R7870 DD from XFX also features a 5-10% factory-overclock. Slated for market-availability on, March 19 like the rest of the Radeon HD 7800 series products launched today, the XFX HD 7870 Double Dissipation will charge a small premium over the reference design.

Sapphire Launches HD 7800 Series

PowerColor Launches a Trio of Radeon HD 7800 Series Graphics Cards

PowerColor joined the Radeon HD 7800 series launch party, with a trio of new graphics cards, two of which stick to AMD’s reference designs, while the third is a new non-reference PCS+ model based on the Radeon HD 7870. The first card (below), is a reference design Radeon HD 7850 graphics card by PowerColor, which also sticks to reference clock speeds of 860 MHz core and 1200 MHz (4.80 GHz effective) memory. The second card is a reference-design Radeon HD 7870, which also carries with it AMD reference clock speeds of 1000 MHz core, and 1200 MHz (4.80 GHz effective) memory.

The third and most fascinating of the three is the HD 7870 PCS+, which uses a reference-design PCB, but augmented with a single-fan PCS+ cooler. This cooler uses a dense aluminum fin array, to which heat is conveyed by five heat pipes. It is ventilated by a single 80 mm fan. As a PCS+ variant, the card features 5-10% factory-overclocked speeds. One will also notice that PowerColor made use of the second DVI connector on the PCB. Expect a small premium for this card over AMD’s target pricing of US $349.99 for the HD 7870.

MSI Announces TwinFrozr III Powered Radeon HD 7800 Series

MSI announced two Radeon HD 7800 series graphics cards, both based on its TwinFrozr III cooling solution, albeit different variants. The R7870 TwinFrozr III from MSI uses a long PCB, and a meatier version of the TwinFrozr III cooler, which has been featured on high-end GeForce GTX 500 and Radeon HD 6900 series, in the past. It uses five 8 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes to convey heat drawn directly from the GPU, to a large aluminum fin array, ventilated by two 80 mm fans. This card is labeled to have factory-overclocked clock speeds.

The R7850 TwinFrozr III uses a shorter PCB, and a new, leaner version of the cooler, which has never been used by MSI before. It uses three 8 mm-thick n nickel-plated copper heat pipes to convey heat drawn directly from the GPU, to the heatsink. The two fans are nested within the aluminum fin stacks to maximize air-flow flow for heat dissipation. MSI boasts about how the noise output of this cooler is “only 27 dB” on load. Like the R7870 TF3, this card is factory-overclocked, too.
