LaCie Announced the Culbuto Flash Drive

When not connected to a computer, the LaCie Culbuto whimsically bobs side to side as it is poked - much like a roly-poly toy. In fact, the name Culbuto is French for a toy with a weighted base that keeps the object vertical even after it is knocked down.

"The search for movement and balance is essential in my work," said Constance Guisset, product designer. "Repeated and infinite oscillation fascinates me. For my first project with LaCie, I proposed a slightly roly-poly key that eventually became LaCie Xtremkey. When LaCie asked me to develop this idea, Culbuto was the result. DisplayPort Adds DockPort Extension to Royalty-Free VESA Standard

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced today that DockPort will be added as an official extension to the existing DisplayPort standard. DockPort is an emerging technology that enables high-speed USB 3.0 data over the existing DisplayPort connector. Originally developed by AMD, Texas Instruments, and other VESA member companies, the DockPort extension will allow notebooks, tablets and other small form factor computers to aggregate the display, data and power interfaces into a single convenient connector.

Computers and other smart devices require high-speed I/O ports to share high-resolution video with external displays, high-bandwidth data with external storage and other peripherals, and power for battery charging. As notebooks and tablets become thinner and more portable, consumers want to combine these three common interfaces into a single port on their mobile device. With a single DisplayPort connection using the new DockPort extension and enhanced power capabilities under development, consumers will be able to attach their computers or tablets to a docking station and have instant, hassle-free access to a wide array of external resources.

Etron Announces EJ888 USB Power Delivery Controller

Managing power delivery of up to 100 watts via Universal Serial Bus (USB) is an important step in enabling a flexible, standardized power management ecosystem. Etron Technology, Inc. (Taiwan GTSM: 5351) today announced its latest USB Power Delivery (PD) Controller IC - EJ888, based on the USB-IF's USB Power Delivery Rev. 1.0 specification, which enables USB power delivery from 10 watts to 100 watts, and significantly reduces device charging time. In addition, it makes power delivery more flexible by adding full bi-directional power that can be renegotiated as system power needs change with the end-user. EJ888 optimizes user mobility by allowing data transmission and power delivery to be combined on a single USB cable. Its advanced power voltage, power stream, and communication features enable low-power-consumption devices, such as phones and MP3 players, and even higher-power-consumption appliances, such as computer monitors and laptops, to be powered via USB.

In a modern life full of various kinds of consumer electronics, power supply voltage and current demands can vary from one cable, charger, and battery to another. In recent years, consumer demand for lower-carbon products and services is growing. USB power delivery is a new power-supply solution that has the potential to greatly reduce electronic waste by eliminating proprietary chargers.

ASUS Z87-Deluxe/SATA-Express Detailed

ASUS released a prototype of the first desktop PC motherboard with SATA-Express support, the Z87-Deluxe/SATA-Express. A variant of ASUS' flagship socket LGA1150 motherboard from its mainline Z87 series, the Z87-Deluxe, the board features two SATA-Express ports. SATA-Express sees a fusion between two of the most successful serial I/O interfaces, SATA and PCI-Express. It's essentially ATA over PCI-Express 2.0 x2, which offers a raw bandwidth of 8 Gbps per direction, 16 Gbps total. The SATA-Express port is structured similar to the classic SATA port, with PCI-Express lanes running over two 7-pin SATA connectors, and an additional block of 4 pins that make up the 18 pins required by 2-lane PCI-Express. A SATA-Express connector is thus unified, and legacy SATA devices should still be able to run off one of the two 7-in SATA connectors in a SATA-Express block.

Since there are no SATA-Express drives in the market, ASUS gave TweakTown a MacGyver contraption that adapts SATA-Express to a physical PCI-Express 2.0 x4 slot (electrical x2). An ASUS RAIDR Express PCI-Express SSD was found to offer sequential transfer rates of around 750 MB/s on ATTO. The rest of the board is practically identical to the Z87-Deluxe. The board uses a 16-phase VRM to condition power for the LGA1150 CPU. It draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS connectors. Expansion slots include three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (x16/NC/NC or x8/x8/NC or x8/x4/x4, depending on how they're populated); and four PCI-Express 2.0 x1 slots.
