A closer look & Installation

A closer look

The manual sports a lot of different languages and black & white pictures to help you with the installation of the hard drive. The CD contains the backup software, which we will try out a bit later. The USB and Firewire cables are both 1m long, while the power cord measures 1.5m.

The external PSU is made by "Sunpro Powmax" and delivers up to 2A. This is necessary because the USB specification only allows a maximum of 500 mW power draw.

The enclosure is shiny black and has some nice X-Craft and Cooler Master writing on it. The back of the device sports the power switch, power plug, two Firewire ports, two USB 2.0 ports and the USB port to connect to the PC. So you can plug your USB sticks and other hard drives right into the back of the device. The case can be opened by pushing the button in the middle. A very nice touch.

The bottom of the casing is perforated to allow outside air into the casing, while the full aluminum cover has a thermal pad to dissipate the heat of the hard drive. These features enable the use of a drive without any additional cooling and noise.

The case can be opened without any tools, by pressing the button in the back, and pulling it back. The black PCB has a few little stickers, each denoting a stop in the quality assurance chain.

Installation

Installing the hard drive is very easy and does not require any tools at all. Just place the hard drive inside the case, plug in the cables and close the X-Craft up. Once plugged in, the front backup button lights up in a very nice blue color.
