Value and Conclusion

  • The 2 GB kit of Crucial's PC2-5300 can be yours for a very respectable $305.99 (£151.72 GBP)
  • Very high clock speed
  • Good performance
  • Timings can be tightened a lot
  • Doesn't require high voltages to perform well
  • Loosening timings more than 4-4-4-10 didn't result in a higher overclock.
  • Sticker on modules does not show frequency/timings or voltage.
The Crucial Ballistix PC2-5300 modules have broken the 1 GHz barrier with an incredible 1024 MHz, while still retaining the CL4 timings. And for people who aren't looking to extract every last MHz out of their components, these modules overclock very nicely on low voltage, even on less voltage than is suggested in the specifications.
Only 1.8V was needed for a very substantial overclock of 183 MHz from their rated speeds of 667 MHz, giving us 850 MHz DDR, while still being able to use fairly tight timings of 4-4-4-12. This configuration would be an ideal configuration for long term use, as the modules don't even get warm on such low voltage. The lifetime of the memory would be considerably increased, while giving you some insane performance!
On the other hand, if you ARE on a mission to get every last MHz you can from these modules, using 2.4V and some active cooling, you can push these modules to over 1 GHz easily. Unfortunately my motherboard wasn't capable of pushing these modules to their limits while using the 1:1 divider, so there is a lot more performance to be gotten from this kit if you have the right hardware!
We were able tighten the timings to 3-2-2-4, which is the tightest setting that most motherboards will allow. This is very impressive, but unfortunately the maximum frequency we could use these timings at was 540 MHz while using 2.4V. From the benchmarks, you can see that is hardly any performance increase while using these timings as opposed to 3-3-3-8.
Crucial has always offered good value for money, and has catered well for the enthusiast market with their Ballistix and Ballistix Tracer range or memory. I found that compared to other high-end ram from OCZ, Mushkin and Corsair the Crucial Ballistix PC2-5300 2GB kit is very nicely priced, and easily competes with the PC2-6400 kits from other manufacturers. Great value for great performance!
