Package

The HE-300 headphones ship in a similar box to that of the HE-500s we recently reviewed. The only thing bundled with the HE-300s is a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter.

The HE-300s inherits the cable from the HE-500s, which is both good and bad. All HE-300s will ship with the revised HE-500 cable which is terminated to 1/8” per default. Also in the box is a 1/8” to 1/4” adapter for those who want to use them with a desktop amplifier.

Closer Examination

HiFiMAN have managed to create their own unique style. The HE-300s look just like its bigger brethren. The color has been changed to a lighter metallic grey which looks quite good.

The mechanical design has been left unchanged from the HE-500s to the HE-300s which is a good thing. The design allows for easy adjustment of the size and seems to hold up quite well.

Due to the lighter drivers the HE-300s are the most comfortable of the HE-series headphones to wear. The supplied cable weighs a ton, but is very durable. HE-6 cables will be available soon on Head-Direct's webpage and if the price is reasonable that would be a nice upgrade.

One of the trademark features of the HE-series headphones is their enormous ear cups. They take up a lot of head real estate. Comfort wise the HE-300s perform admirably since they are both light and well ventilated due to the openback design.

The metal grills take up pretty much the entire faceplate of the ear cups.

Velour pads are standard on the Head-Direct HiFiMAN HE-300s. Head-Direct are working on a more advanced version of their pads which will allow for easier installation.
