A Closer Look

Taking a closer look at the AMMO, I have to admit that I am impressed with the design and construction materials used. The shell of the RFID enclosure is made of strong metal, while the text has been edged into it instead of printed. The front edge is a bit slanted, which further adds to the cool design. In Win seems to have some very creative people in charge of overall looks as many of their products score big with cool and unique looks.

The slanted front reads "In Win" on a rubber piece, while the rear holds a mini USB connector along with a small DC-in plug. These are covered with a rubber piece to protect it from dust. On the top edge of the unit are the FCC and CE logo along with the phrase "Designed by In Win in Taiwan".

To gain access to the interior, simply unscrew the two small screws and pull off the rear cover. I was surprised to see, that the entire tray consists of a fairly stiff rubber. This is simple, cheap, effective and pure genius. Such a material protects the hard drive from drops, kills any vibrations and also eliminates the need to use any screws to hold the hard drive in place.

The PCB with the IO chip can easily be seen on one end of the tray. It utilizes the INNMAX IM7206 IC, which is an all -in-one solution Hi-speed USB to SATA Bridge with RFID Control. The chip utilizes AES 128 bit encryption to protect the contents of the drive. This may not be the newest and thus safest way to limit access to the data, but should suffice for ordinary home & office use. Just do not store any state secrets on it as AES 128 bit is not considered unbreakable anymore. A small opening on the underside of the rubber tray gives way to the coil required to work with the included RFID tags.
