UE BOOM Personalized Edition Review

Performance

The UE BOOM's performance was great from the get-go, but UE managed to improve its performance quite a bit through a combination of firmware and software updates. The software updates are for Android and iOS. There is unfortunately no Windows Phone version available yet.

The updated version of the UE BOOM now features a personalized start-up sound you can toggle on/off in its software suite.

The UE BOOM is still right at the top in terms of sound quality. Since the original review we had some time to dabble with Creative and a.m.p devices, and the BOOM proved to still be the benchmark in terms of sound quality and usability. Its new and much improved app and firmware simply build on that performance. The new bass boost EQ option is very good, especially when used in bigger rooms as it elevates the 50-200 Hz range substantially, which increases the presence of the upper bass region in the mix.

Our first encounter with the UE BOOM left us a bit annoyed by the fact that the speakers could not remember the state they were last used in. It seems as though UE read our review as this particular issue was fixed, which makes using multiple BOOM speakers a much more enjoyable experience. The auto double-up feature makes configuring two BOOMs for stereo or mono completely hassle-free. You had to power both units up, connect to one, hold the bluetooth connect button on the second unit down and press up twice in the app to wait for the magic to happen before. You'd pick stereo or mono once the connection to the second device had been established.
