Value and Conclusion

  • The ROCCAT Kave sell for around €100.
  • True 5.1 surround sound
  • External USB powered amplifier
  • Good directional positioning in games compared to price
  • Good quality microphone
  • Very good build quality
  • Microphone mute LED
  • Light weight
  • Music and movie playback sound quality
  • Coherency issues
  • Noisy amplifier section
  • Slightly annoying headband
The ROCCAT Kave headset design is good up to a point. The noisy amplifier, general sound quality and the headband construction is a major let down. The mechanical design is ROCCAT at its best, it is durable, light weight and easily adjustable, however, the rest of the design could do with a bit more attention. After a lot of tweaking you can get good surround sound performance, but with it comes a loss of detail that is massive. Compared to other 5.1 headsets out there the ROCCAT Kave does not manage to fix any errors with regards to position coherency and detail level, which is a shame.
For a €100 gaming headset it is definitely alright, but you should keep the cons in mind when deciding. There are stereo headphones out there around €100 that are close in terms of directionality and provide a much higher detail level, comfort, and music/movie performance with less tinkering about in driver suites. For gamers at competitions this will be an issue since you almost never get time to do advanced setup and when you do the competition machines are usually equipped differently than your own computer.

ROCCAT's Kave is a good 5.1 headset but it does not manage to steer clear of the known pitfalls commonly associated with these types of headsets. Compared to other similarly priced 5.1 headsets it has just as good performance, but it is not a headset that truly excels at anything.
