Shuttle OMNINAS KD20 Review

A Look Inside »

Exterior

The KD20 has a conveniently small footprint many will find useful in a home environment where free space is usually limited. Also, its style is very elegant, and the finish is of a high quality despite the plastic front door that covers the removable HDD trays (or caddies). In general, Shuttle managed to offer a very nice-looking product of pretty small dimensions, so it will easily fit/adapt to your home environment. Although it is budget-priced, its looks don't make it look cheap. The front has a single USB 3.0 port along with an SD-card reader and some LED indicators along the bottom.

A useful description of all LED indicators, buttons, and I/O ports located at the front of the KD20 can be found in the user's manual.

One of the two sides is made of plastic, while the other side and the top are covered by a thick aluminum piece featuring a nice finish. The latter also helps with heat dissipation, which increases the thermal performance of the NAS.

The bottom side of the NAS. There, we find two rubber feet and a small label with its power input requirements, the serial number of the unit, and the usual country of manufacture: China.

The rear has a nice grille that covers the fan below which are a Gigabit Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, the power input socket, and a Kensington security slot. There is also a reset-to-defaults button, hidden inside a small hole.

With the front door swung open, the two metallic caddies are revealed. On top of each of them is a small button that allows you to hot-swap the HDD.

An overview of the KD20 as it is provided in the user's manual.

The caddies are of a good quality and can accommodate 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs. They are thankfully numbered, which will prove really useful in case of removal.
