Thermaltake W2 GPU waterblock Review

Value and Conclusion

  • Thermaltake's Aqua Brazing All Copper series W2 waterblock retails for around $30
  • Compact
  • Both 3/8” and 1/4” barbs included
  • Makes good contact with GPU
  • Not compatible with most modern (large GPU) cards
  • Might be too restrictive for 1/2" setups
  • Flimsy mounting mechanism
In my opinion, the W2 is a great block for people who run SFF systems or for those who have watercooling geared towards silence.
The first group of users will truly value the size of the block. Most GPU blocks out on the market are much larger, and usually occupy two slots. Where space is scarce, the W2 offers an undeniable benefit.
The latter group will be impressed, as the block is reliable, doesn't leak, and is easy to set up. Of course, it doesn't make any sound either, so you can enjoy a completely silent PC.
The cushion on the bottom of the block is an obstacle that can be overcome by its removal, however I have a feeling that it should stay put. From the very outset, the W2 is not a block designed for high performance cooling. We can see this from the result with the GPU running at 1.5V - the temperatures shot up to 41°C under load. While this is much better than air cooling, it still leaves a lot to be desired.
Wholeheartedly, I can only recommend the block to the two groups of users I have mentioned above. Those seeking extreme performance should look elsewhere.
