Toshiba Rolls Out its First Sub-$800 Ultrabook

Toshiba joined industry-wide efforts to bring the Ultrabook down to mainstream prices, by launching the Satellite U845t. The 14-incher features a lean feature-set to achieve its $799 price-point. It features 1366 x 768 pixels resolution, a Core i3 dual-core processor, up to 6 GB of RAM, 500 GB HDD-based storage with a 32 GB cache-SSD to speed things up, and connectivity that includes USB 3.0, HDMI, and SDXC. The Satellite U845t will be released to market on March 10th.

Toshiba's Windows 8 PCs Now Available

Toshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced that its consumer line-up of Satellite laptops and Ultrabooks, Qosmio laptops as well as its All-in-One desktops featuring Windows 8 are available for pre-order starting today and will be widely available for purchase from select U.S. retailers and ToshibaDirect.com on October 26.

Toshiba's new laptops feature spacious touchpads with Windows 8 gesture support to allow users to perform gestures on the touchpad as they would on a touchscreen device. Toshiba Shows Off its Own Windows 8-Powered Tablet-Ultrabook Hybrid

Like its compatriot Sony, Toshiba has taken advantage of IFA 2012 to showcase a Windows 8 hybrid machine that can be used as a tablet or as an ultrabook, depending on its owner's needs. Known as the Satellite U925t, Toshiba's 'best of both worlds' mobile solution is just 0.78 inches thick, it weighs 3.2 pounds (~ 1.45 kg), and features a 12.5-inch sliding touchscreen (protected by Gorilla Glass), a backlit keyboard, an Intel Core i5 (Ivy Bridge) processor, a 128 GB SSD, a rear-facing 3-megapixel camera, and a HD webcam.

The U925t also has two USB 3.0 ports, a HDMI output, support for Intel's Wireless Display technology, NFC, and comes pre-loaded with a few branded apps like Desktop Assist, Toshiba Central, App Place, News Place and Book Place. Toshiba's creation is expected to become available on October 26th (Windows 8's launch day) priced just north of $1,000.

Toshiba Intros Satellite U840 14-inch Ultrabook

Toshiba launched the Satellite U840 Ultrabook in Singapore. This 14-inch Ultrabook is Toshiba's first. It is 19.9 mm thin, and weighs as low as 1.59 kg. It uses an aluminum body with a silvery brushed-metal finish. The metal body also adds rigidity. It is driven by 2nd generation Core ULV "Sandy Bridge" processor, backed by DDR3 memory, and storage options that include either 128 GB SSD or a HybridHDD that has a 16 GB SSD subunit that caches hot data on the rest of the drive.

Toshiba's proprietary Hi-Speed Start technology works to reduce start-up time. The 14-inch display offers "HD resolution", we're guessing it's 1600 x 900 pixels. Network connectivity includes gigabit Ethernet, WiFi b/g/n, and Bluetooth. The lone display output is a full-size HDMI. Other connectivity includes USB 3.0, and USB 2.0. The SleepCharge technology allows you to charge your smartphone even with the notebook powered down. Slated for later this Q1, 2012, the Satellite U840 is priced at SGD $1,399 (US $1,125).

Possible Precedent: Accused Americans Can Be Forced To Decrypt Their Encrypted Data

The Fifth Amendment rules that nobody may be "compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself." Or, in other words, one has a right to avoid self-incrimination. Therefore, it's highly significant that Judge Robert Blackburn ordered a Peyton, Colorado woman accused of a being involved in a mortgage scam, to decrypt the hard disc drive of her Toshiba laptop no later than February 21. If not, she would face the consequences, including contempt of court. In a 10-page opinion, the judge wrote, "I find and conclude that the Fifth Amendment is not implicated by requiring production of the unencrypted contents of the Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop computer."

Toshiba Breaks Barriers Bringing Highly Mobile Notebooks with Satellite R800

Toshiba Computer Systems, a division of Toshiba Europe GmbH, today announced the Satellite R800 series, a new range of slim, light and high-spec notebooks targeted at consumers. The series includes the 33.8cm (13.3") Satellite R830, the 35.6cm (14.0'') Satellite R840 and the 39.6cm (15.6'') Satellite R850. Thanks to a sophisticated heat management system Toshiba has managed to integrate Intel's latest full-performance CPUs into the slim casings. The Satellite R800 series models are estimated to be available during the second quarter 2011 throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Toshiba Announces Recall of Sandy Bridge Powered Notebooks

Notebook major Toshiba announced a recall-drive of all notebook PCs it sold that are based on Intel's Huron River platform, consisting of processors based on Sandy Bridge architecture and Cougar Point chipset, after Intel announced a critical design flaw with the chipset. In a consumer notice, Toshiba advised current owners of affected notebooks to return the notebooks for a full refund. It also asked users to backup data and remove all personal, confidential, or proprietary information before returning the units.

Affected models include variants of Satellite A660, Satellite A665, Satellite A665 3D Edition, Satellite E305, Satellite L655, Satellite M645, Portege R835, Qosmio X500, Qosmio X505. Details of which exact model numbers are affected, are tabled below. This Monday (1/31), Intel announced the discovery of a critical design error of the chipset that drives Intel's Sandy Bridge processors. In some cases, the SATA ports of the chipset will degrade in both performance and functionality. Intel had announced a massive component recall drive to pull out affected components from manufacturers.

Toshiba Announces Smart and Affordable Satellite C660 and Satellite Pro C660

Toshiba Computer Systems, a division of Toshiba Europe GmbH, today announced the Satellite C660. Toshiba Intros ''Value'' Satellite Pro Notebook Models

Targeting the "back to school" shopping season, Toshiba announced two new Satellite Pro notebooks based on the Intel Calpella platform, the 15.6 inch Satellite Pro S500-131, and the 17.3 inch Satellite Pro L670-172. Despite the Satellite Pro series traditionally catering to the mobile performance segment, Toshiba seems to have adopted a "value" approach, with the two being priced at just 649 EUR and 749 EUR, respectively. The 17.3 inch L670-172 has an LED-backlit display with 1600 x 900 pixels resolution, and is driven by the Intel Core i3-350M dual-core processor running at 2.26 GHz, with 3 MB of cache. It is backed up by 4 GB of memory, a 320 GB hard drive, and DVD writer drive.

The 15.6 inch Satellite Pro S500-131 carried an LED-backlit screen with 1366 x 768 pixels resolution, the same Core i3-350M processor, but with 2 GB of memory. Both models make use of Intel's integrated graphics, are powered by Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and offer connectivity that includes gigabit Ethernet, WiFi b/g/n, and battery life of up to 4 hours, but the 17.3 inch model also offers a multi-gesture trackpad and Bluetooth. Toshiba's new notebooks are available in Europe starting now.

Toshiba Releases Satellite T210 and T230 Ultra Slim Notebooks

Toshiba launched two new ultra-slim notebooks based on Intel's latest CULV processors, the 11.6-inch Satellite T210 and 13.3-inch Satellite T230. The T230 is driven by an Intel i3 ULV 330UM dual-core processor, up to 4 GB of DDR3 800 MHz memory, 500 GB HDD with motion sensor (parks the drive if it senses a fall), 3x USB 2.0 ports, USB+eSATA combo port, 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, VGA webcam, and multi-card reader. It measures 322 x 223 x 17.6/33.6 mm, weighing a little over 1.75 kg. The battery runs for 8.5 hours on a full charge. This model is available with a "Precious Black" finish. The Satellite T210 is the value model, powered by Pentium U5400 processor, 3 GB of DDR3-800 memory, 250 GB storage with motion sensor, and connectivity features identical to the T230. This one features an "Iron-Red" finish, it measures 284 x 202.8 x 17.6/33.6 mm, weighing 1.48 kg.

Toshiba Announces Launch of the Satellite P500 Multimedia Laptop

Toshiba Intros Satellite Pro S300, S300M Notebooks

Toshiba made two new additions to the mainstream notebook scene, with the 15.4" Satellite Pro S300, and 14.1" Satellite Pro S300M. These notebooks are largely business-class, with features aiding business applications. They feature built-in business card readers, face-recognition systems, a USB Sleep-and-Charge/eSATA combo port, built-in support for docking and the fourth-generation EasyGuard technology, which is a preventative maintenance utility that keeps check on the performance and functionality of the notebooks’s critical hardware components.

Under the hood, these notebooks feature a Centrino 2 class 45nm Core 2 Duo processor, 2~4 GB of memory, up to 250 GB of hard-drive space, DVD SuperMulti drive. The integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD IGP handles graphics. As for the software, Windows Vista Business is the standard OS, users could opt for Windows XP Professional.
