GeIL Shows off ZENITH Line of High-Performance SSDs

GeIL stepped into the modern SSD scene with its ZENITH line of SSDs. The series consists of two models, the performance-focused ZENITH S3, and the value-focused ZENITH A3. Both are built in the 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch form-factor, with SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and both come in capacities of 60 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB. Both appear to be powered by Seagate-SandForce controllers, and MLC NAND flash memory. The ZENITH A3 offers sequential transfer rates of up to 540 MB/s reads, with up to 300 MB/s writes; while the ZENITH S3 offers up to 550 MB/s reads, with up to 500 MB/s writes.

Seagate to Acquire LSI Flash Businesses From Avago

Seagate Technology plc, a world leader in storage solutions, and Avago Technologies Limited, a leading semiconductor device supplier to the enterprise storage, wired, wireless and industrial end markets, today announced that they have entered into a definitive asset purchase agreement under which Seagate will acquire the assets of LSI's Accelerated Solutions Division ("ASD") and Flash Components Division ("FCD") from Avago for $450 million in cash.

The acquisition strengthens Seagate's strategy to deliver a full suite of storage solutions, providing Seagate with established Enterprise PCIe flash and SSD controller capabilities to deliver solutions for the growing flash storage market. LSI's ASD business, which is the second largest player in the PCIe flash space, offers a highly differentiated enterprise-grade PCIe flash solution focused on the high-growth cloud and hyperscale markets. LSI's FCD business, led by its SandForce SF2000 and SF3700 controller products, is driving a multi-product roadmap to address volume markets.

Seagate Announces Pricing and Increased Size of Senior Unsecured Notes

Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX) announced that it has increased the size of its previously announced offering of $500 million aggregate principal amount of senior notes due 2025 (the "Notes") to $1 billion. The Notes were priced at 100% of the aggregate principal amount and will bear interest at a rate of 4.75% per annum. The Notes will be issued by Seagate HDD Cayman, an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Seagate Technology plc ("Seagate"), and guaranteed by Seagate.

The Notes are being sold in a private placement to qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A and Regulation S under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the "Securities Act"). The sale of the Notes is expected to close on May 28, 2014, subject to customary closing conditions. Seagate estimates that the net proceeds from the offering will be approximately $987 million after deducting underwriting discounts and estimated offering expenses. Seagate intends to use the net proceeds from the offering of the Notes for general corporate purposes, which may include, but are not limited to, the retirement of a portion of its outstanding indebtedness (including pursuant to the tender offers previously announced by Seagate), capital expenditures and other investments in the business.

Seagate Technology Reports Fiscal Third Quarter 2014 Financial Results

Seagate Technology plc today reported financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2014 ended March 28, 2014. For the third quarter, the Company reported revenue of approximately $3.4 billion, gross margin of 28.2%, net income of $395 million and diluted earnings per share of $1.17. On a non-GAAP basis, which excludes the net impact of certain items, Seagate reported gross margin of 28.5%, net income of $453 million and diluted earnings per share of $1.34. During the third quarter, the Company generated approximately $443 million in operating cash flow, paid cash dividends of $140 million and repurchased 3.5 million ordinary shares for $184 million. There were 326 million ordinary shares issued and outstanding as of the end of the quarter. Cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash, and short-term investments totaled approximately $2.3 billion at the end of the quarter.

Seagate Completes Acquisition of Xyratex

Seagate Readies 6 Terabyte Hard Drive for Q2

Seagate is reportedly working on a 6 terabyte hard drive, which it plans to roll out in Q2 (April-June), 2014. According to leaked company road-maps, the drive could be launched in the later part of the quarter, and could be branded in the new Constellation ES.3 Megalodon series. The drive will be built in the 3.5-inch form-factor, its interface, however, remains unclear (whether it's SATA or SAS). The drive tucks in six 1000 GB platters. Competitor HGST's 6 TB Helium drive, in comparison, runs seven 857 GB ones. Given its enterprise credentials, Seagate could give it at least 7,200 RPM spindle speeds.

Seagate Technology Reports Fiscal Second Quarter 2014 Financial Results

Seagate Technology plc today reported financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2014 ended December 27, 2013. During the second quarter, the Company reported revenue of $3.53 billion, gross margin of 28.0%, net income of $428 million and diluted earnings per share of $1.24. On a non-GAAP basis, which excludes the net impact of certain items, Seagate reported gross margin of 28.5%, net income of $455 million and diluted earnings per share of $1.32.

During the second quarter, the Company generated approximately $856 million in operating cash flow, paid cash dividends of $142 million and repurchased 33 million ordinary shares for approximately $1.5 billion. There were 328 million ordinary shares issued and outstanding as of the end of the quarter. Cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash, and short-term investments totaled approximately $2.3 billion at the end of the quarter.

Seagate Rescue Data Protection Plan Expands its Reach to New Retailers

Seagate Technology plc today announced at the annual Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, the expanded availability of the industry's first data protection service plan, Seagate Rescue, to include Staples in the United States and with NCIX and Canada Computer in Canada. The plan is not only available from more retailers, but now also covers hard drives and storage that may be included in a laptop or desktop computer system. Seagate Ultra Mobile to Power Lenovo YOGA 2 PC

Seagate Technology to Acquire Xyratex Ltd

Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX), a world leader in storage solutions, and Xyratex Ltd (NASDAQ: XRTX), a leading provider of data storage technology, today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Seagate will acquire all outstanding shares of Xyratex in an all-cash transaction valued at $13.25 per share, or a total of approximately $374 million, including approximately $80 million in cash on Xyratex's balance sheet as of August 31, 2013. The consideration represents a premium of approximately 27% per share over Xyratex's stock price at the close of trading on December 20, 2013.

Xyratex has developed a leading hard disk drive ("HDD") capital test equipment business. The acquisition of this business will further strengthen Seagate's vertically integrated supply and manufacturing chain for disk drives and ensure uninterrupted access to important capital equipment. The acquisition also expands Seagate's storage solutions portfolio by adding Xyratex's industry-leading enterprise data storage systems and high-performance computing business. Seagate will operate this business as a standalone entity and will focus on opportunities to improve and expand the business.

Seagate Offers Windows Storage Server to Small- and Medium-Sized Businesses
