iPad Mini Rumors Get Louder, Video Games Industry Echos Them

To capitalize on its dominant iPad brand, and offer devices at untapped price-points, Apple is said to be working on a smaller variant, so far referred to as "iPad Mini". This little fellow will pack a smaller 7.85-inch screen compared to the 9.7-inch screen on standard-sized iPad. The fresh round of rumors were supported by sources in the video games industry, who tend to be aware of upcoming iPad products, since it's a gaming platform with sizable reach. The iPad Mini could start at a staggering price of US $199, and is headed for a Q3, 2012 release.

Mini? So it's just slightly too large to keep in a pocket? Why?

Warning: Harsh words incoming! Do you even understand the concept of a tablet?

I think 7 inches is to small for a tablet. 10 inches is the sweet spot imo.

iPod touch is too small for apps and videos IMO. Sure, a nice music player, and while you CAN use apps, it really is just too small a screen to be productive.

Yet the iPad is too big to stick "in your handbag" ;-). I think the mini iPad will solve that and give me access to a more productive device (non-laptop) and the girls something to use as a reader and fashion accessory.

It is probably more robust too. An iPod/iPhone can take a heavier knock or drop than an iPad. This mini-ipad could be a lot tougher than the ipad.

It will see like hot cakes. I'll get one for sure.

A good idea but somehow I'm not convinced that apple will sell them at $200 price point.

Though Im really liking the iPad 1 and its screen size I recently bought for an outrageous price. Cant beat buying 64gb iPad 1 for $120 in perfect condition. XD

Regardless of the going price they are going to sell like crazy. People don't understand the concept of research. It's made by Apple, and its new, I MUST have it.

Yes, I do understand the concept.

By opinion the iPad is just an iPhone you can't call with and too big for your pocket. I was wondering why the need to cover the middle ground here by making it slightly smaller

Are they planning on making an iPad Mega to appeal to Smart Board users?

your opinion doesn't seem to recognize that people actually have use for these devices! a 10" tablet and a 7" tablet are established markets, they're not doing anything out of the ordinary except MAYBE pricing it reasonably.

just because YOU don't have a use for a 7-10" device doesn't mean they are worthless or should not be made - it simply means you don't have a use.

As much as I hate apple i would consider one of these just for the misc. apps that are only on apple that I wish I could use.

So what would be an example of where you would rather want a 7" tablet than a 10" or a personal data assistant that you can carry around without a satchel or a sling bag? Why wouldn't you prefer a 14 or 18 inch tablet?

Edit: Never mind, this is pointless.

hmmmm that is a good question ... I shall sub for answers :)

at $200 I may actually grab one of these things.

Also will this come with the retina display?

IMHO, they should just drop the price on the iPad 2 to $299. No need for a new sku, when they already have something to fill the gap. At $399 for the iPad 2, I just feel it's not worth it (+$100 for retina and better graphics).

Ah I thought you were questioning the entire concept of a tablet, but it's only the 7 inch you object to? I can kinda agree there as I see little use of a tablet 7 inches big, and yes I've had one. Too small for comics and ebooks and too big for general use. A lot of people seem to like them though and who am I to judge (I've turned from a werewolf to a unicorn)?

That would indeed be pretty sweet.

Does anyone know how the 8GB iPod Touch's sales have been over the last year or so? I really can't see them having the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Mini AND iPad. They could ditch the Touch for the Mini.

I don't think they could stitch in a retina display at $200. The one in the new iPad costs Apple $87 for each one. But, it seems unlikely that they would release a new device without it, so we'll see.

I wish my phone were too big to fit in my pocket and couldn't make calls.

Apple to the rescue, providing products you can flaunt on the metro to impress that girl you can't talk to.

Everyone here hating on the iPad Mini probably bashed the iPhone and the iPad when they were announced. The Kindle Fire sells like hotcakes for a reason. If it's an industry or segment that's profitable, you bet Apple wants a piece. For what it's worth, Google's releasing an Asus made tablet under the Nexus brand soon.

Why is everone questioning the 7" tablet market? What do you people think the Kindle Fire and Nook Color are? It's an established market with good demand.

Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, Samsung, Asus, Ainovo, Acer, and a ton more companies all manuf. 7 inch tablets. Only when Apple does it does everyone start hating because Apple is forcing people to buy/use a too small yet too big 7 inch product.

I own none of them. I use my phone, laptop, or PC. Honestly people who carry a smartphone, a tablet, and laptop are stupid. One of my reps from a company actually told me, wait, I have to put my Ipad away and get my macbook air so I can get that for you, then proceeded to put me on hold for 5 minutes while he did it.

Fucking annoying.

Get a laptop, get a phone, use it and stop fucking around with pleasure products.
