Final Fantasy VII PC Revamp Confirmed

Square Enix recently commented that it wouldn't dare remake Final Fantasy VII until it had surpassed it with a new FF. If you, like me, are a PC gamer with no real connection to the series and have no idea why it's so beloved, you'll seen get to see for yourself, as Square Enix today confirmed the leak that the JRPG's been revamped for a PC re-release. Final Fantasy VII was released for PC back in 1998, but is a bit tricky to get ahold nowadays and disagrees somewhat with modern hardware and operating systems. As well as, presumably, not requiring fiddling and fussing to run on your shiny modern PC, the revamp boasts new features. It'll pack 36 achievements for you to collect, cloud saves so you can keep your progress across multiple computers, and a new 'Character Booster' which lets you boost your HP, MP and Gil levels to the max and get on with the game. Plus, of course, it doesn't require a ton of fiddling to get working. When will you get to play it? "Soon" is all Square Enix has to offer. Curiously, the publisher says it'll be available "exclusively" on its own store, but surely it wouldn't be that daft in this modern wonderful of digital distribution? Hit the official site for more information.

D007I think it would be a horrible cop out to release this game as it was on the PS2.. It would be an insult to ff7 to not give it the care it deserves with a full overhaul.. A ported game would be an insult as far as I'm concerned..
When was FF7 ever on the PS2?

Anytime that somebody put a FF7 disc in the PS2 and forgot about backwards-compatibility with the PS1, so just assumed it was a PS2 game? Just a guess.

Sadly, there is absolutely zero enhancements made to the game, other than checkpoint saves. A full re-vamp of the game would sell billions of copies. Not sure why they aren't doing it then, considering there's only been one good title since FFVII in the franchise. They could use a boost.

IGN has contacted Square Enix and has gotten a clearer picture of the extent of the upgrade done on this game. The new Final Fantasy for PC release is based on the same PC port previously released, but features up-res detail of the character and monster models in the fight sequences and in in-game cut-scenes. Rendered elements such as backgrounds and CG movies will be the same as in previous releases of FF VII.
Anyone with a PS1 disc (emu for upscale) or the original FF7 PC (fan mods for upscale) already has a good idea of what this re-release looks like :) On the upside, it's only $9.99.

We expect you to fully beat the game in the next day or so and write up a compare-and-contrast article between this re-release and the original release. You have lots of work to do, better get to it!

Currently playing the game.. It is extremely nostalgic.. I <3 it..
I am playing in fullscreen, 1920x1080 as well, on a 50" TV, so that's a win..
I hear disabling linear filtering makes it look better, so I did that.
Also original graphic mode makes it look uglier from what I hear, so turned that off.

It is NOT a direct port.. If it was, you'd be stuck at something like 640x480 res, or w/e it was..
So there have been some small tweaks.

Idk if the mods for ff7 will work with this.. but I hope with the changes, it makes the game easier to mod, so people can take advantage of the newer options.

I really wish they'd make an HD remake.. A totally remade HD game, with the same story..
I would buy it for full price, so fast..
But I am loving this anyway..

Never completed it though.
Good times.

Rumor suggested this would have some sort of always on DRM, is that the case? If so I'm not gonna drop anything on it, if not I'll be buying the f**k out of it.
