AMD to Slash Nearly a Third of its Workforce

AMD is reportedly working to cut its workforce by nearly a third, about 20 to 30 percent, according to sources who spoke with All Things D. That's anywhere between 2,200 to 3,300 jobs. The sources say the cuts could affect employees in engineering and sales, departments that have been spared in previous rounds of cuts. The cuts will be deep enough to show that AMD is scaling back its product offerings. It's likely that the cuts could be announced along with the company's quarterly results due on October 18.

AMD CEO Rory Read is said to have assembled a team of business consultants from McKinsey & Company and BCG to guide the company through the process. McKinsey's will handle the job cuts, while BCG will be consulting on a "grand strategy" that could take the company forward.

OH, I have such a headache
Maybe AMD will take this money they are saving by cutting job's and start to make a real competitive product again?? One that will put Intel in it's place like they did in the Athlon day's? One can only hope.

they already have that product, it's called APU and when APU transform to UPU with unified memory architecture + integrated southbridge and the large number of happy programmer/developer with the simplified of their job (and cost) from same sharing, register, instructions, execution unit of programming X86 and graphics programming. finally they will have good product again and in the same time avoid old mistake for not having enough software support to utilize their product capabilities.

hypothetically they may cut 30% from engineering and marketing of desktop CPU and GPU, add 5%-10% engineer to Unified computing research, lay low for a while in the desktop market and still save some cost. meanwhile they will have few years of advantage of unified research and Intellectual Property while their competitor is left behind, well..Nvidia already start their Boulder project. win or not ? let them fight for their live..i will keep gaming.
