Left 4 Dead on linux was already getting higher frames than windows. Now even more frames! Be interesting to see more games scale this way on linux.

how can it be faster than windows? i remember when hl2 came out on mac, it had missing effects

i also wonder, if they just enable the opengl renderer for windows, would performance be similar?

And games can get even faster. I don't know if Valve tested the games without compiz, but if the testing was done with compiz then with the redirected rendering disabled for full screen mode the frame rates will go even higher.
This is just the beginning of awesome performance. Other things are coming like Wayland.

You're running a 5870 and you're excited about more frames? It must of been really bad before.

Meanwhile, on Windows...

really you mean the engine built just recently runs better then the old ass source engine, amazingly predictable. Do people not notice things like DX11 WoW runs faster then DX9 WoW because WoW doesn't use crap like tessellation, the game is visually identical, just changing to DX11 code path caused a significant performance boost because DX11 is not ancient and was designed to have less overhead.

Thats the main reason why all DX11 titles run like crap. Instead of making them run faster by using faster DX11 codepath, they cram gazillion triangles through tessellation with nearly no visual improvement while making games run slower. Just for the sake of bragging they use tessellation. It's so idiotic. And they ALL do this. I just don't get it why.

This is because OpenGL is so much better than DirectX. But nobody listens...:shadedshu

OpenGL is Open Source, EAX wasn't ;)

And since when open source means it's automatically better? OpenGL is not used widely because support and tools are pretty much non existent and if you're a developer of an OpenGL based engine, you're pretty much on your own. Where DirectX (or shall we say Direct3D) has pretty good support for developers despite the fact it's proprietary standard.

No duh but it doesn't mean it is defacto. Read a dictionary real quick.

Depending on the game and nvidia's involvement, it's also to make AMD perform worse than nvidia.

I guess AMD's revenge was Dirt Showdown, thankfully that game blows.
