DirectX 9.0 L is Vista only: L for Longhorn

Seems like previous news about the a DirectX 9.0 L version being really a DirectX 10 variant for Windows XP have sprung up from pure hope for such support and no hard facts. In fact the L variant of DirectX 9.0 is the exact opposite. It will be a faster DirectX 9 version just for Vista. So not only will Windows XP users have no DirectX 10, but the "normal", slow DirectX 9.0 variant as well. One more reason to jump on the Vista bandwagon.

first of all, if you people don't like microsoft's product, the solution to your problem is very simple... STOP USING IT.
there are plenty of other alternatives out there. some of them are even completley free.

which I personally am definantly going to try out as soon as vista hits the market....

Man, anyone that is mad at MS then yes, stop using it. Noone told you you had to. You don't have the right to it just because you bought a PC. It is incredible how someone can so easily blame a company for wanting to make a profit, yet they pony right up to a gas pump and pay $4-5 for a gallon of gas without even thinking about it.

Anyone that gets so upset over this, grow up. Try reading this as well:

There you will see that the "enthusiast" is hardly 10% of the market share at most and in fact XP has the same restrictions as Vista. And swearing is just so mature as well. Some people are just children.........

b1lk1,

I agree and disagree with you. I agree that many people complain about vista for many stupid reasons.
But there is one reason to complain about and ur statement that XP has the same restrictions as vista is not completely true.
When XP came out they didnt make you upgrade from 2000 or 98 in order to support newer games.
This is now the case and is quite rediculous.
I say this b/c what about people who are buying computers or XP software (which is still around $100 for an OEM version).
The majority of people do not know of this and this is Microsoft's way of screwing those people over.
I think this is pretty sad that is how they must do things now.
I for one will not be getting vista and will be using Linux just for that fact (once XP is inadequate).

I knew it sounded too good, MS wouldn't dare kill it's prized Vista by putting it's best feature in XP.

You're right, but I have many software titles that run on XP only, and there were ALOT of older games that will not run on XP at all. The only real issue I see here is that when you do a system upgrade, you'll need to sell your mobo, HD and Vista copy as a unit.

This is a very touchy subject, and it is sure to just get worse the closer it comes to Vista's actual release. All I am saying is that running out and getting the cracked version is just not an option for most people and if you pay close attention to the rules, you just won't have a problem. As for Linux, they must be in heaven. They are sure to have a major increase in people running it. If someone on the planet would just step up and find some way to compete with MS on a global scale, things liek this would be sure to be things of the past.

I agree with what you are saying.
I also find it odd about the HD.
As we all know HDs easily become corrupt or die.
So if your HD dies 2 times, you have to call up MS and try to get the to understand?!?!?!
That is complete bull.....You buy it, you own it, you should be able to use it anyway you want to that is legal....
I cant wait till someone cracks this thing, just like how they cracked the protection on DVDs (lol)

Honestly, calling up MS and telling them to unlock your code to put on another PC, takes about 3 minutes out of your entire day. I've done it a million times, and the ONLY thing they ask you is are you using this on only ONE pc. You say yes, and you get the code, end of story. I've done this for OEM and Retail versions.

If so many people didn't pirate everything under the sun related to microsoft, there would not be such tight antipiracy measures in place. So don't complain.

Unfortunately Paul Thurrot is completely incorrect in his legal analysis of the XP license. I'm very disappointed that a "trusted expert" is spending his public credibility for the sake of the MS $ he is getting paid. While the new license issue is defendable there is no defence in lying about the past.

Well, I don't quite understand this move by M$... the only people that are interested in DX10 is us gamers, businesses don't care about it in most circumstances, they only need it for office applications in most cases. Therefore, M$ are just angering the small amount of gamers who will be sticking to XP for a while anyway given that Vista is worse for gaming. This will lead on to game developers sticking to what most of the market is using: DX9, so DX10 isn't being used and to complete the circle gamers won't move to Vista because it won't offer many advantages!

If OpenGL existed in Vista then developers could use that instead which would solve the problem of a DX9-10 transition period, OR M$ could just release DX10 to XP users... all I can see coming from this is OpenGL mods for Vista or DX10 mods for XP. I've had two failed downloads of Debian in the last week, so I've dumped Fresh Download and moved on to DAP again. Anyway, I certainly intend to edge towards Linux a bit more.

its obvious what this move by M$ is, its about forced upgrading and hopefully developers use OpenGL as the prefered API to encode games rather than handicap themselves by using DX10 and alienating a vast majority of the educated pc market who will not upgrade to Vista within the first 10-12 months after release.

Well I can't see the devolopers that have spent their entire lives learning OpenGL giving up... it would be well worth their time to develop a way to get OpenGL onto Vista - or even some sneaky DX10OpenGL mod of some kind :D

Let's look on the brightside for a minute, maybe MS is actually thinking for once. MS realizes that Vista's implementation of DX9 is about as smooth as a dirt road. And so they decide to fix it....this is good, maybe they're on a trend :). Or maybe they just needed more advertising for Vista, and don't tell us something important, like "DX10 games won't work on DX9L" lol.
