AMD to Continue Developing Intel Chipsets

Although ATI was a respected manufacturer of chipsets for Intel-based motherboards, the merger with AMD shook up the market a little bit, leaving some doubt as to whether or not AMD would continue to supply hardware supporting its major competitor. However, AMD has revealed that it is happy for the old ATI chipset development to continue, provided that Intel is willing to have AMD producing chipsets for its processors. AMD has also admitted that it isn't planning to dominate the chipset market like Intel - its current aim is just to have a reasonable share, instead of trying to topple Intel and face a price war.

This is like 'the right thing to do' you see in the movies so often :pimp:

Go AMD:rockout: . Heck, not to mention, barcelona is bound to blow something out of the water...

So AMD dosent want to have a big market share?

How is that something to admire? Thats just stupid.. or maybe a lie.

seems right to me ...what they loose in CPU sales they make up in the GFX market.....shit I'd be happy with 30% of that market!

Its called biding time.... they cant go head to head against intel.... intel is sooo big. I hope this means crossfire intel boards :D (then again with the new amd cores comming out i may not need an intel chip at all)

this is tantermount to admitting defeat.

Well AMD is either planning something sneaky, or they just don't think they can beat what Intel has for now, so they wait and pretty much give up for the moment.

yep, they can't compete with Intel in chipsets mass production and quality
and this a amd fan here

I disagree. AMD has long since been able to go "toe-to-toe" in quality.. however I will admit Intel's shear size makes it impossible to compete in quantity.

I think AMD is doing the smart thing.
AMD cannot take out Intel overnight, if customers are willing to buy AMD chipsets why not make it?
It is income after all.:toast:

Indeed, amd has the ability to pwn intel design/performance/power wise, they simply cant churn out silicon at even a 10th of the rate at which intel can.

pt acctualy till the socketA days amd made their own chipsets, they only made 1 socketA chipset, they stoped because there where so many chipset makers for their chips in the mainstream market that it was becoming saturated.

amd also makes chipsets for server boards and has since the a64 came out, check tyans boards out, amd's got a good chipset there, they wanted ati's chipsets for mainstream and intagrated chipset markets(onboard video espcly.)

and this is smart, think about it, amd knows they cant pwn intel it intels own market, but they want a part of that market, because THEY KNOW ITS VALUABLE.

tigger69: amd is far from stupid or admiting defeat they know they cant go toe to toe with intel for intel chipset market, it would be like intel trying to go toe to toe against nvidia and amd inthe athlon64 chipset market, well expect intel could just flood the market with cheap chipsets even if they sucked they would sell.
but intel isnt intrested in the amd market, it would be "loosing face" if they made amd chipsets, amd isnt like that, if they can make $ from a market even without being top dog then they want in.

"pride goeth b4 the fall" intels pride is whats hurt it for years, they knew nutburst wasnt working like they had hoped against amd's chips, now they have core2, a good arcitecture again, but they also have that pesky pride telling them that theres no way amd can catchup in the performance market, yes i know this for fact, i get to go over to intels test lab once a month or so and have heard them talk, they havent gotten to see amd's next gen chips in person yet, and are just sure that their chips are far better.

blah this sounds fanboi'ish i know but its one of the reasions i dont like intel they tend to be to damn full of themselves, kinda like apple.

we will see whats to come when it comes, eather way i plan a kuma or rana upgrade for this system once their price comes in line with other things(im sure they will be overpriced at first, to be expected, new=expencive)

just remmber, amd knows what their possition is, they know they want a part of the intel chipset market because its lucritive, even if their chips again start domonating people will still want intel chipsets just like even with core2 "domonating" amd now people still are buying amd chipsets like mad :)
