Phison Approaches the 15 GB/s Mark with its Latest E28 Gen 5 SSD Controller at Computex

Phison at Computex 2025 showed off its latest E28 series client M.2 NVMe Gen 5 controller. The reference E28-based drive from Phison, built using a 6 nanometer process, was shown nearly hitting the 15 GB/s sequential reads mark. A live benchmark session with CDM put out 14942.85 MB/s sequential reads, with 14149.47 MB/s sequential writes. Both the sequential reads and writes are the highest in the industry for this form-factor. Next up, the company showcased its new E31T DRAMless controller and reference design drives in the M.2-2242 and M.2-2230 form-factors. Phison says that the first drives implementing the latest E28 controller should hit the market in the coming weeks.

Nice to finally see Phison's counter to the SM2508 but as fast as they were out the gate with the E26, this might be too late as many major brands (including SanDisk/WD and Crucial) have already adopted the SM2508. Guess we might find the E28 on OEM brands like Corsair though.

The most interesting part will be power consumption and heat output. The performance differences are negligible in practice anyway so what really counts is which high end controller manages to stay the coolest one. SM 2508, Phison E28 or Samsung Presto?

if there would be focus on improving the controllers random performance as well, I still kinda feel bumping up sequential til kingdom come is pointless when 99% of the time the i/o ops on your PC is random..

RND4K Q1T1 is still less than 100Mb/s
