Accredited Psychologists Warn of 'Technology Addiction'; Compare it to Sex Addiction

New medical research confirms what hardware enthusiasts, gamers, workaholics and teenagers have known for a while: people are literally becoming addicted to technology. Professor Nada Kakabadse of Northampton University got concerned when she noticed people that had a serious problem putting away their phones, PDAs and other links to the digital world. Remarkably, Professor Kakabadse was able to link addiction to technology and addiction to sex. The professer found that nearly a third of everyone carrying a technological device is addicted. This is most likely because we are creatures of habit, and "can get addicted to anything that is remotely interesting." Professor Kakabadse also was quick to point out that technology got a lot more addicting since the introduction of the internet. Witty Inquirer writer Nick Farrell wonders how the professor could possibly avoid citing porn as a reason for this sudden burst inaddiction.

Last time *I* checked, sex is the reason we're here and technology is what drives society forward. Isn't the wheel the first form of technology mankind created? It drove us forward(quite literally these days), and now that simple wheel has been implemented on many inventions that have cascaded into other inventions that put the world where it stands today.
And the definition of "addiction" is subjective as far as I'm concerned.

addiction is using anything without moderation. You can be addicted to anything honestly. For instance you can be addicted to something strange like showers. Yes you actully can, cause i was, i took at least 12 a day because i really enjoy showers. Use without moderation is an addiction

It's actually the same thing, everyone here who claims not to have had sex with his computer is a liar.

I agree with that.

I mean seriously, we are aware that we use the computer alot, we just dont give a shit .

I think an addiction is an uncontrollable urge to do something out of habit rather than purpose. And since computers serve purposes of entertaining and educating (as well as allowing work to be done) I find it hard to apply that definition to it.

Smoking is an addiction as it actually alters brain chemistry. How can a computer ever hope to do that through allowing us control of IT. Usually the addictive has control over the user, not the opposite.

Agreed :)

imo, this researcher has an addiction in trying to make us feel bad about our time spent on computers.

MusselsUnlike console nerds who play the same game 10 hours a day (housemate on final fantasy) or the 'normal' people who go out and get drunk, today i built 2 mATX rigs and one ATX - two core 2 duos, one A64 FX62. Each one had special needs (power, noise, etc) and had to fit into tiny cases. Somehow i find that more of an intellectual challenge, and more exciting, than getting really drunk and making ugly chicks pregnant.
Now that makes sense....LOL...:toast: Funny how this "doc" compares it with sex addiction...I was wondering why just looking at the new AMD X2's was causing me to get wood.

yes i admit....im an addict!!! but.....what the hell are you supposed to do when your in a stupidly well paid job, have no gf, have a life (obviously) dont have to pay no rent (or not yet) or any of the other bills??? (btw i regularly contribute to upto 40% of the electricity bill in my house)

we gots nothing to spend our cash otherwise & let me put it this way...

If winning at the races makes my dad happier then when i or my sister was born then I can be happier then the day i was born when i get new parts to make a monster rig.

simple as.

when i got my 8800GTS in, i almost married the delivery guy cuz i was so happy :) i was boucing off the walls like mad

& in the words of Dave Chapell doing his Samuel Jackson beer skit...."Yes they deserve to die & i hope they burn in hell!"

P.S.

I use to be in a much much much well paid job - where i use to work 12hr shifts at least 5days a week now what the hell am i supposed to do with that money asside from saving some of it which i already do lol.

And all addictions are bad now?

Every single person is addicted to something. What are we meant to do? Sit in a darkened room with nothing for stimulation just in case we get addicted.....but won't we become addicted to sitting in a darkened room? Oh, its a conundrum.

you need to work 8 hours a day, rest 8 hours, play for 8 hours.
You need to drink 5 glasses of water a day.
On weekends you need to play a violent contact sport, and that night you must get so drunk you need a stomach pump, as well as sleep with various drunk women.

Thats what we should do, to make sure we arent addicted!

RavenasSeriously, aren't those good addictions? Would they rather us be addicted to drugs?...
And it's that mentality that makes addictions even more dangerous; attempting to downplay or effectively minimize the dangers of one, by contrasting it with another.

There is no good addiction.
