HP and DreamWorks Animation Working on New Display That Can Display 1 Billion Colors

Hewlett-Packard is planning to deploy a new color display technology that can display 1 billion colors, in a whole new product called the HP DreamColor display. The technology was developed for two years by HP and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. and is intended to increase the color gamut of today's displays and provide more vibrant color reproduction. HP says that the technology improves upon today's widely used displays, which offer 24-bit color, making 16.7 million colors available per pixel. The company plans to raise the color display to 30-bit, which can offer 1 billion colors per pixel. In addition the DreamColor display will incorporate a new LED backlight technology in its LCD screen that makes blacks blacker and whites whiter, according to Jeff Wood, director of product marketing at HP. The display was announced Tuesday at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas, but it won't be ready until later this summer. Initially the HP DreamColor display will be targeted at workstations, but according to Wood it "can be used on any myriad of systems today".

Had to laugh at the 1 billion colors. I'm color blind for the most part. :ohwell:

sounds expensive...can the human eye even see that many colors?

I always thought that the human eye could only see around 16 million colors..hmmm

How about a decent and "true" 24-bit colour TFT WITHOUT dithering or 6-bit sparkle and zero-flicker backlighting.

I would really appreciate a DECENT TFT that had low eyestrain for continued use... and HIGH DENSITY... meaning the use of 120dpi fonts or better for improved font rendering and readability. It's about time we moved to 3600x2400 resolution on a 21" screen... ie 4 times the pixel density. Thats a greater technological breakthrough than 30bit TFT that will prbably only work at 8 bit color and dither/flicker to a virtual 10bits.

At 3600x2400, Windows can EASILY scale the fonts and icons... and we would all enjoy better photos, pictures, PDF reading, etc. :pimp:

That would be amazing. I would buy one for sure.

Manufacturers base part of the price of a monitor on how many dead pixels on how many panels are allowed to be shipped out and purchased by consumers. At resolutions that high, the chances of a couple dead or stuck pixels is extremely high.

I'd much rather go with multiple monitors, if I could remove the bezel on them and reduce the space in between the screens.

As long as companies keep trying to improve on LCD technology I dont think we will have to wait very long for that to happen matey. Just give them a chance to take one step at a time.:pimp:
