Corsair Announces High-Density Memory Line for Mac Pro Desktop Systems
Corsair, a worldwide leader in enthusiast computer and flash memory products, announced today the launch of their new Corsair high-density Memory Line for Mac Pro desktop systems. Mirror-Drive Door G4s used PC2700 DDR.
G5s used PC3200 DDR, except for dual-core G5s which used PC5300 DDR2. They could support either ECC or Non-ECC.
These all used just regular old PC RAM (although the G4s and anything before that couldn't use high-density DIMMs, but many PC chipsets couldn't either).
Mac Pros are based around server and workstation hardware, they don't just use DDR2. They currently run on the Intel 5400 chipset, which requires DDR2 FB-DIMM, AFAIK, and that's what these are. This is basically DDR2 with ECC, and running through a serial bus, rather than the parallel our PCs use. So it isn't regular to see people using FB-DIMMs for desktops, but it's not exactly proprietary RAM. The different bus, and the ECC makes them "special", kinda.
Also, Corsair a little behind the times, the original 2006 model Mac Pro ran with 667MHz DDR2 FB-DIMMs, the 2008 model runs only with 800MHz stuff. Corsair needs to speed up a bit.
