AMD Releases Off-branch Adrenalin 24.10.37.10 Drivers for Space Marine 2

AMD on Friday released an off-branch Preview driver that should interest those playing Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 this weekend. The Adrenalin 24.10.37.10 Preview Driver fixes intermittent driver timeout bugs facing the game during gameplay. The drivers also fix overly dark shadows or desaturated colors in "Black Myth: Wukong" when the Global Illumination setting is medium or higher. But these aren't the main payload of this driver release, it has to do with extending AMD Anti Lag 2 Vulkan API support for Counter-Strike 2. The technology works to reduce whole-system latency during gameplay, which should improve your responsiveness in online multiplayer gameplay.

Xockets Files Antitrust, Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against NVIDIA and Microsoft

Xockets, inventor of Data Processing Unit (DPU) technology has launched a legal battle against NVIDIA and Microsoft. The lawsuit, filed in Texas, accuses the companies of forming an illegal cartel to avoid fair compensation for its patented DPU technology. Xockets claims that the Data Processing Unit technology its co-founder Parin Dalal invented in 2012 is fundamental to NVIDIA's GPU-enabled AI systems and Microsoft's AI platforms. The lawsuit alleges that NVIDIA has infringed on Xockets' patents since its 2020 acquisition of Mellanox, a deal NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang once called a "homerun." Xockets is seeking injunctions to halt the release of NVIDIA's new Blackwell GPU-enabled AI systems and Microsoft's use of these systems in their generative AI platforms.

The case touches on the bigger issues of intellectual property rights and the monopoly in the tech sector. Robert Cote, a Xockets board member, describes the suit as a fight against "Big Tech's predatory infringement playbook," accusing NVIDIA and Microsoft of making moves to devalue smaller companies' innovations. The AI revolution continues to transform the tech world, and this legal dispute may have a profound effect on the way intellectual property is valued and protected in the industry, possibly introducing new precedents for the relationship between tech giants and smaller innovators.

ASUS Launches GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 Memory

ASUS became the first NVIDIA add-in card partner to debut a GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card with GDDR6 memory, away from its original memory type of GDDR6X. The RTX 4070 originally comes with 12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory, yielding 504 GB/s of memory bandwidth. This ASUS card (which we hope is part of a larger refresh by NVIDIA to reduce costs of the RTX 4070), uses GDDR6 of a yet-unspecified speed. You do have 21 Gbps GDDR6 (non-X) in the market, but we imagine these to be expensive, which leaves NVIDIA with the 20 Gbps GDDR6 chip that's more readily available (which AMD uses in its RDNA 3 graphics cards), and 18 Gbps GDDR6 that the company itself uses in cards such as the RTX 4060 Ti. Any reduction in memory bandwidth would have to be compensated with increase in GPU clocks, but we don't see that happening here—the regular variant of the ASUS DUAL RTX 4070 GDDR6 EVO comes with the reference 2475 MHz maximum boost speed, while the DUAL OC variant only slightly cranks this up to 2520 MHz.

CD Projekt Red CEO Confirms Plans for Future Animated Projects

During a recent earnings call, Co-CEO of CD Projekt Red (CDPR) Michal Nowakowski confirmed that thanks to the success of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the development team will be looking at further animation projects.
"[The developer is] definitely planning to do more in terms of animation," says Nowakowski (on Gizmodo). "Expect to see more for sure, but that's as far as I can go right now."

Considering the fact that upcoming projects, The Witcher 4 (given the codename "Polaris") and Cyberpunk 2 (given the codename "Orion") are massive projects which would definitely take a lot of resources and focus, it will probably take a while to finish the animated series. But then again, considering the fact that CDPR will likely play a supervisory role for any project undertaken, a new animated series might not take a huge amount of time.

Capcom Updates Resident Evil Mobile Ports To Require Internet Connection

Perhaps you recently tried booting up the mobile versions of the Resident Evil 4, 7 and Village and discovered something surprising, you needed an internet connection. Simply put, you're not the only one. The reason why it was probably surprising is that it's really rare for single player games to require internet connection. If we're talking about mobile games in general, then it would be very common for an internet connection to be required, but not for a single player game like Resident Evil.

After Capcom's recent update to the Resident Evil 4, 7, and village on IOS, Capcom dropped an update note for each of the games, stating: "Due to changes to the startup process, an internet connection is now required when starting this app." Now, this is somewhat strange considering the fact that it would be odd for Resident Evil, being a single player game, would need the internet connection for data collection or DRM checks, as some suggest on Reddit. And would be strange because, there are lots of mobile games like Resident Evil in mobile game stores, and they don't require being connected to the internet like Resident Evil.

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D Beats Ryzen 7 9700X "Zen 5" at Gaming

With German retailer Mindfactory.de listing the Ryzen 5 7600X3D, European hardware reviewers are beginning to put the chip through its paces on their Socket AM5 test beds still warm from last month's Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" launch coverage. PCGH is among the first such reviewers, and has an interesting set of findings. The biggest question everyone is looking to be answered is "how does it game?" and here PCGH has some good news. The processor is very fast at gaming, and in fact beats the 8-core Ryzen 7 9700X "Zen 5" chip in gaming benchmarks, ending up 6% faster than when averaged across the games in PCGH's test suite. It's also about 9% slower than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which remains the reigning champion.

Being faster than the 9700X also means that the Ryzen 5 7600X3D is faster than every other Ryzen 9000 series processor launched till date, including the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X. The 7600X3D is a whopping 11% faster than the 9950X at gaming. When compared to Intel contemporaries, the 7600X3D ends up about 1% slower than the Core i5-13600K, and 2% slower than the newer i5-14600K. These were the two chips the 7600X3D was sent to beat at gaming, so crowds are drawn to the Ryzen 5 series, and the chip ends up falling a touch short. A lot will depend on whether AMD gives the 7600X3D a wider launch, and what its street price ends up being. Find the complete PCGH review of the Ryzen 5 7600X3D in the source link below.

Intel Core Ultra 300 Series "Panther Lake-H" Leaks: 18 CPU Cores, 12 Xe3 GPU Cores, and up to 45 Watt TDP

Details have emerged about Intel's upcoming "Panther Lake" processors, set to be the third generation of Core Ultra mobile chips. Called the Core Ultra 300 series, these CPUs are expected to succeed "Lunar Lake". According to recent leaks, Panther Lake-H will be manufactured using Intel's cutting-edge 18A process node. The chips are said to feature a combination of Cougar Cove P-Cores, Skymont E-Cores, and Xe3 (Celestial) integrated graphics. This architecture builds upon Intel's hybrid core design, refining it for even better performance on mobile devices. The leaked information suggests a range of configurations for Panther Lake-H, the high-perfomance variant of the lineup. These include models with varying core counts and power envelopes, from efficient 25 W parts to more interesting 45 W options. Notably, some SKUs reportedly feature up to 18 cores in total, combining P-cores, E-cores, and LP E-cores in a five-tile package. This is an increase from previously believed 16 cores.

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D Available in Europe for 60€ Less Than the 7800X3D

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D Socket AM5 desktop processor isn't a MicroCenter USA-exclusive anymore, with the chip now being available across the pond in Germany. Major German retailer Mindfactory.de has the processor listed at €329 (including taxes). This puts its pricing €60 less than that of the popular Ryzen 7 7800X3D (going for €390 on the site). Unlike the MicroCenter deal, the Mindfactory listing is standalone—you get the processor in a retail PIB package, and not part of a bundle. To sweeten things, you also get an AMD-branded T-shirt.

The 6-core/12-thead processor is based on the older "Zen 4" microarchitecture, but supercharged with 3D V-cache technology, which gives it 96 MB of last-level cache that is known to have a significant impact on gaming performance. The 7600X3D comes with a 4.10 GHz base frequency, and 4.70 GHz maximum turbo frequency. The retail PIB box resembles that of the 7800X3D, but with the Ryzen 5 brand extension. There's no cooling solution included in the box, but the cooling requirements of this processor aren't steep, with its TDP being rated at just 65 W.

Black Myth: Wukong's Absence from Xbox Not Due to Platform Limitations

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the delay of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox is not due to the platform's technological limitations but something else entirely. Black Myth: Wukong is a widely known game, reaching a large amount of sales within few months after launch. This well known Black Myth: Wukong, is available for PC and PlayStation 5 players, however one direct competitor is missing. Microsoft's representatives reiterate that Black Myth: Wukong would launch on Xbox soon, but the delay is not due to technological limitations but a case of timed exclusivity by a direct rival, Sony PlayStation.

This claim by the Microsoft representative may be true, after all, before the current generations, Microsoft boasted that their Xbox Series X would be the most powerful household console till date, that surpasses the performance of direct rivals. So that alone may clear the doubts about delay of the game due to platform limitations. Another reason to believe it is because, this isn't the first time we've heard that Sony signed a timed exclusivity contract with devs of a highly potential game title. To avoid competition with direct competitors and just watch the show from the front seat, it's possible that Sony may have done the same again. But then again, it could also be that the developers found out about the technological gaps between the two platforms and decided to hold back the game for a few optimizations before launch. And what the representatives are saying, is just a way to divert the attention from the platform's limitations.

AMD OpenSIL Implementation (AGESA Replacement) On Track for 2025

OpenSIL is an open-source CPU initialization framework project that seeks to replace on-chip initialization microcode, such as AGESA, across both client- and server processors. AMD looks to implement OpenSIL as it makes its AMD EPYC processors more friendly to large customers that want to take control of this aspect of the processor. Since its open-sourcing in June 2023, AMD has come up with reference motherboards implementing OpenSIL, as well as modifying a Supermicro server motherboard to the architecture, to demo at conferences. AMD firmware engineer Paul Grimes presented the company's progress with implementing OpenSIL, at the OSFC conference, in Germany. It's been known that AMD is targeting a 2025-26 timeline for OpenSIL to hit product, but AMD put out specifics, such as its next-generation "Venice" server processor supporting OpenSIL.

"Venice" is codename for an AMD EPYC server processor generation succeeding "Turin." It is built on the future "Zen 6" microarchitecture, and AMD could at least unveil the processor some time in 2025, if not mass-produce it. late-2024 thru 2025 could see the company ramp up "Turin" and other server processors implementing "Zen 5." That's not all, AMD plans to being OpenSIL even to client processors, with the generation of Ryzen processors based on "Zen 6." This will see the AGESA microcode replaced by a first-party firmware from AMD based on OpenSIL, which PC OEMs will be able to customize. The biggest impact of this change will be felt in the commercial notebook and commercial desktop segments, where large organizations can take greater control over the chip initialization firmware.

TSMC's Next-Gen AI Packaging: 12 HBM4 and A16 Chiplets by 2027

During the Semicon Taiwan 2024 summit event, TSMC VP of Advanced Packaging Technology, Jun He, spoke about the importance of merging AI chip memory and logic chips using 3D IC technology. He predicted that by 2030 the worldwide semiconductor industry would hit the $1 trillion milestone with HPC and AI leading 40 percent of the market share. In 2027, TSMC will introduce the 2.5D CoWoS technology that includes eight A16 process chipsets and 12 HBM4. AI processors that use this technology will not only be much cheaper to produce but will also provide engineers with a greater level of convenience. Engineers will have the option to write new codes into them instead. Manufacturers are cutting the SoC and HBM architectural conversion and mass production costs down to nearly one-fourth.

Nevertheless, the increasing production capacities of 3D IC technology remain the main challenge, as the size of chips and the complexity of manufacturing are decisive factors. However, the higher the size of the chips, the more chiplets are added, and thus the performance is improved, but this now makes the process even more complicated and is associated with more risks of misalignment, breakage, and extraction failure.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 Reach Final Stages This Month, Chinese "D" Variant Arrives for Both SKUs

NVIDIA is on the brink of finalizing its next-generation "Blackwell" graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. Sources close to BenchLife indicate that NVIDIA is targeting September for the official design specification finalization of both models. This timeline hints at a possible unveiling at CES 2025, with a market release shortly after. The RTX 5090 is rumored to boast a staggering 550 W TGP, a significant 22% increase from its predecessor, the RTX 4090. Meanwhile, the RTX 5080 is expected to draw 350 W, a more modest 9.3% bump from the current RTX 4080. Interestingly, NVIDIA appears to be developing "D" variants for both cards, which are likely tailored for the Chinese market to comply with export regulations.

Regarding raw power, the RTX 5090 is speculated to feature 24,576 CUDA cores paired with 512-bit GDDR7 memory. The RTX 5080, while less mighty, is still expected to pack a punch with 10,752 CUDA cores and 256-bit GDDR7 memory. As NVIDIA prepares to launch these powerhouses, rumors suggest the RTX 4090D may be discontinued by December 2024, paving the way for its successor. We are curious to see how the power consumption is handled and if these cards are packed efficiently within the higher power envelope. Some rumors indicate that the RTX 5090 could reach 600 watts at its peak, while RTX 5080 reaches 400 watts. However, that is just a rumor for now. As always, until NVIDIA makes an official announcement, these details should be taken with a grain of salt.

Intel 20A Node Cancelled for Foundry Customers, "Arrow Lake" Mainly Manufactured Externally

Intel has announced the cancellation of its 20A node for Foundry customers, as well as shifting majority of Arrow Lake production to external foundries. The tech giant will instead focus its resources on the more advanced 18A node while relying on external partners for Arrow Lake production, likely tapping TSMC or Samsung for their 2 nm nodes. The decision follows Intel's successful release of the 18A Process Design Kit (PDK) 1.0 in July, which garnered positive feedback from the ecosystem, according to the company. Intel reports that the 18A node is already operational, booting operating systems and yielding well, keeping the company on track for a 2025 launch. This early success has enabled Intel to reallocate engineering resources from 20A to 18A sooner than anticipated. As a result, the "Arrow Lake processor family will be built primarily using external partners and packaged by Intel Foundry".

The 20A node, while now cancelled for Arrow Lake, has played a crucial role in Intel's journey towards 18A. It served as a testbed for new techniques, materials, and transistor architectures essential for advancing Moore's Law. The 20A node successfully integrated both RibbonFET gate-all-around transistor architecture and PowerVia backside power delivery for the first time, providing valuable insights that directly informed the development of 18A. Intel's decision to focus on 18A is also driven by economic factors. With the current 18A defect density already at D0 <0.40, the company sees an opportunity to optimize its engineering investments by transitioning now. However, challenges remain, as evidenced by recent reports of Broadcom's disappointment in the 18A node. Despite these hurdles, Intel remains optimistic about the future of its foundry services and the potential of its advanced manufacturing processes. The coming months will be crucial as the company works to demonstrate the capabilities of its 18A node and secure more partners for its foundry business.

SilverStone Intros FHS 140X, a Thick 140mm Fan with High Static-Pressure

SilverStone today introduced the FHS 140X, a powerful 140 mm fan meant to be used with radiators or heatsinks, or as high-pressure ventilation in server/workstation builds. This fan is 38 mm-thick, while standard 140 mm fans are supposed to be 25 mm in thickness. The impeller is geared for high airflow, and is turned by a high-power motor. This combination results in a stellar 10 mm H₂O static-pressure, and maximum airflow of 222.95 CFM, which it achieves at its top speed of 3,400 RPM. All this comes at a maximum noise output of 50 dBA, and a little over 13 W of power-draw (so you need to plan your fan-control setup carefully). The fan is clad completely in black, including the impeller and frame. A metal grill comes included, which you're recommended to place near the inlet. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Creators of Risk of Rain 2 and many other Hopoo devs snapped up by Valve

The Risk of Rain series has been successful over the years. The first game in the sequel was developed by university students Paul Morse and Duncan Drummond, becoming an indie smash hit. The second game, Risk of Rain 2, was released in 2019 and also sold pretty well, gaining 500,000 players just in early access.

Later, in 2022, Gearbox gained ownership of the Risk of Rain IP, from Morse and Drummond's development studio, Hopoo games, and simply put, the reception to its latest expansion has not been going great since then.
