EVGA Says Goodbye to Driver DVDs

Jacob Freeman, Global Product Management Director at EVGA, has confirmed via a Tweet that future EVGA motherboards (H370 Stinger included) will no longer come with a driver DVD. Instead, the consumer will receive a sleek 8 GB USB 2.0 flash drive with all the necessary drivers and software. While some users might argue that it's good practice to get the latest drivers from the motherboard support page, you still need to install the network driver to access the internet after a fresh Windows installation. EVGA's decision is a well thought-out one as not all system builders include an optical drive in their builds or want to spend $15 on one just to install a driver. The included flash drive is re-writeable, so users can store other things on it if desired. Jacob commented that the cost of including a standard 8 GB USB 2.0 flash drive is about twenty times that of an old-school DVD. Nevertheless, EVGA motherboard prices will not increase to cover the cost.

Intel Core M3 8114Y "Cannon Lake-Y" Processor Surfaces in 3DMark

The Intel Core i3-8121U was the first Cannon Lake processor to be revealed to the public. Today, we got word of the existence of another 10 nm chip. The Intel Core M3 8114Y, as its name implies, belongs to the low-powered Cannon Lake-Y family. It's a dual-core processor with four threads that runs at a base clock of 1.5 GHz. Although there was no mention of the processor's boost clocks, the Core M3 8114Y is expected to boost to 2.2 GHz. Like its predecessor, the chip should have a 4.5 W TDP. The 3DMark results also revealed that this model in particular supports LPDDR4 memory. Unlike the Core i3-8121U which has its iGPU disabled, the Core M3 8114Y comes with an Intel UHD Graphics iGPU.

No Man's Sky NEXT Update Coming July 24th to All Platforms, Features True Multiplayer

No Man's Sky was one of the most promising games in recent times, with its exquisite concept and graphics technology, which looked to allow for a seamless, truly universal, space-exploration experience. However, No Man's Sky was its own worst enemy, as promised features never made it to the retail version of the game, and its universe, while absolutely expansive, didn't offer much more to do than the joy of being what was sometimes called a "screenshot simulator". These concepts will always be divisive, but one thing stands: No Man's Sky didn't quite fulfill its potential, and that left most players disappointed.

Queue multiple updates (the Foundation, Pathfinder and Atlas Rises updates), which have always brought the game a number of steps closer to the original vision that was presented to audiences, and now, the announced NEXT update, coming to all platforms (including the new Xbox One release, with specific 4K and HDR improvements for the Xbox One X) this summer. This update will introduce a true multiplayer implementation to No Man's Sky, which should bring interactivity levels in the game up. A number of other improvements are being kept under wraps. If Sean Murray's words are anything to go by (and he has been making an effort of not getting too excited about what he has to share), this might be the update - the game - to enroll users again through the long, and hopefully lazy, days of summer. Snippets of Sean Murray's post on Xbox follow, after the break.

NVIDIA GTX 1080-successor By Late-July

NVIDIA is reportedly giving finishing touches to its first serious GeForce-branded GPU based on a next-generation NVIDIA architecture (nobody knows which), for a late-July product announcement. This involves a limited reference-design "Founders Edition" product launch in July, followed by custom-design graphics card launches in August and September. This chip could be the second-largest client-segment implementation of said architecture succeeding the GP104, which powers the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070.

It's growing increasingly clear that the first product could be codenamed "Turing" after all, and that "Turing" may not be the codename of an architecture or a silicon, but rather an SKU (likely either named GTX 1180 or GTX 2080). As with all previous NVIDIA product-stack roll-outs since the GTX 680, NVIDIA will position the GTX 1080-successor as a high-end product initially, as it will be faster than the GTX 1080 Ti, but the product will later play second-fiddle to a GTX 1080 Ti-successor based on a bigger chip.

Intel's Mobileye Secures a Future-Focused Deal for 8 Million Self-Driving Systems in 2021

Intel's Mobileye, the AI and self-driving feature the blue giant acquired last year for a cool $15.3 billion, has just announced, via an exclusive report to Reuters, that they've secured a contract to provide some 8 million self-driving systems to an European automaker. The deal is a future-focused one, and will see, by 2021, distribution for Intel's EyeQ5 chip, which is designed for fully autonomous driving - an upgrade to the EyeQ4 that will be rolled out in the coming weeks, Reuters reports, according to senior vice president for advanced development and strategy at Mobileye Erez Dagan.

Amnon Shashua, Mobileye's chief executive, said that "By the end of 2019, we expect over 100,000 Level 3 cars [where the car is self-driving but still allows for user intervention should the system be unable to progress for more than 10 seconds] with Mobileye installed." This deal is sure to make Intel even more of a player in the automotive space, where NVIDIA and a number of other high-profile companies have been making strides in recent years.

Bain Capital's $18 Billion Acquisition of Toshiba's Chip Unit Goes Through

Toshiba Corporation announced today via a press release that China regulators have approved the sale of Toshiba Memory Corporation (TMC) to Bain Capital. The $18 billion deal was struck last year, but it was put on hold for several months as Chinese antitrust regulators were contemplating its approval.

Things were looking grim for Toshiba and Bain Capital as they were caught in the middle of the current US-China trade war. Nevertheless, China has given them the green light to proceed with the deal. Now that the necessary anti-trust approvals are in place, Toshiba and Bain Capital expect the sale it to be completed by June 1. Bain Capital said in a statement, "We are making this important investment because we see the opportunity to further grow Toshiba Memory Corporation. This transaction will help ensure a competitive global semiconductor market and protect the supply chain from potential disruption."

EK-Vardar EVO 120ER RGB
The EK-Vardar RGB is a high-static pressure computer cooling fan, designed and built primarily for highest-performance computer liquid cooling systems. The Vardar family of cooling fans carries the notorious name of a type of the cold northwesterly wind blowing from the mountains down to the valleys of Macedonia. It is a type of ravine wind, enhanced by a channeling effect while blowing down through the Moravia-Vardar gap, bringing cold conditions from the north to the Thessaloniki area of Greece. Most frequent during winter, it is blowing in the rear of a depression when atmospheric pressure over eastern Europe is higher than over the Aegean Sea.

Intel "Cannon Lake" Confirmed to Feature AVX-512 Instruction-Set

Intel updated the ARK information page for its stealthily launched 10 nm production chip, the Core i3-8121U "Cannon Lake," to confirm that the chip supports the new AVX-512 instruction-set. This is the first "mainstream" client-segment processor by the company to feature the extremely advanced instruction-set that, if implemented properly on the software side, can double performance/Watt compared to tasks that can take advantage of AVX2.

The instruction-set made its debut with the Xeon Phi "Knights Landing" HPC processor, and made its client-segment debut with the Core X "Skylake X" HEDT processors. It remains to be seen if the implementation of AVX-512 on "Cannon Lake" is complete, or if some instructions found on HPC processors such as the Xeon Phi are omitted due to irrelevance to the client platform.
