Cherry Announces the MC 3000 Ergonomic Mouse

AMD Announces Amendment to Wafer Supply Agreement With GLOBALFOUNDRIES

AMD announced that it has entered into a long-term amendment to its Wafer Supply Agreement (WSA) with GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. (GF) for the period from Jan. 1, 2016 to Dec. 31, 2020. "The five-year amendment further strengthens our strategic manufacturing relationship with GLOBALFOUNDRIES while providing AMD with increased flexibility to build our high-performance product roadmap with additional foundries in the 14 nm and 7 nm technology nodes," said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO. "Our goal is for AMD to have continued access to leading-edge foundry process technologies enabling us to build multiple generations of great products for years to come."

EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 HYBRID Launched

EVGA today launched the GeForce GTX 1080 HYBRID graphics card, priced at US $729.99, a $129.99 premium over the GTX 1080 baseline pricing. The card is characterized by a factory-fitted all-in-one, closed-loop liquid cooling solution that works in conjunction with a minor air cooling system. The liquid cooling component cools the factory-overclocked GPU, along with some of the heat from a base-plate cooling the memory and VRM; while a conventional 100 mm fan's air-flow actively cools that base-plate.

Intel Core i7-7700K "Kaby Lake" SANDRA Scores Surface

Someone with access to a Core i7-7700K "Kaby Lake" processor and an ASRock Z270-Extreme4 motherboard put the chip through SiSoft SANDRA 2015 CPU tests. Engineering sample or not, the clock speeds of the chip appear to check out with those of the lineup as we know it. The core ticks at 4.20 GHz, with a maximum Turbo Boost frequency of 4.50 GHz. You also get 8 MB of L3 cache, and HyperThreading. The benchmark confirms that Intel is working on a new platform refresh chipset, with the Z270 chipset succeeding the existing Z170. Existing LGA1151 could support the new chips, with BIOS updates.

At its stock speeds, the i7-7700K churns out a SANDRA 2015 "Processor Arithmetic" score of 151.94 GOPS. Its "Processor Multimedia" score yielded is 379.8 Mpix/s. To put things in perspective, a Core i7-6700K "Skylake" processor running at its stock speed of 4.00 GHz core with 4.20 GHz Turbo Boost typically yields 140.88 GOPS in "Processor Arithmetic" and 353.8 Mpix/s in "Processor Multimedia" tests, according to LegitReviews. Intel is expected to launch the 7th generation Core processor family, alongside the 200 series chipset, later this year. Kaby Lake is Intel's third CPU micro-architecture for the 14 nm process, after "Skylake" and "Broadwell."

HGST Announces the Ultrastar SN150 PCIe NVMe SSD

Western Digital Corp. (NASDAQ: WDC) today announced that its popular HGST-branded Ultrastar SN150 PCI Express (PCIe) NVMe solid state drive (SSD) is now certified for use with VMware Virtual SAN and vSphere. Optimized for easy set-up, the Ultrastar SN150 SSD for VMWare environments reduces latency, and brings hyperscale-level performance and enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) time to virtualized servers and cloud storage. This can significantly lower the total cost of ownership of VMware storage environments over traditional storage architectures by reducing performance tuning and field support costs. In server-side environments where VMware virtualization management is utilized, the Ultrastar SN150 is an ideal option for data center managers building or deploying systems on VMware Virtual SAN or vSphere.

Part of Western Digital's HGST-branded Ultrastar data center storage solutions family, the certified Ultrastar SN150 is available in a low-profile, half-height, half-length (HHHL), add-in card form factor and is one of the first NVMe SSDs in the industry to utilize VMware's in-box NVMe driver. Intel Xeon E3-1200 V6 "Kaby Lake" Series Detailed

Intel is preparing a broad lineup of enterprise CPUs based on the upcoming 14 nm "Kaby Lake" silicon, besides the first wave of its desktop lineup, with no less than 8 quad-core SKUs. What makes the lineup of the Xeon E3-1200 V6 family more comprehensive than previous generations is the fact that some of the SKUs feature integrated graphics. Predecessors of the E3-1200 V6 series generally lack integrated graphics. Intel denoted parts that feature integrated graphics with Xeon E3-###5 V6, and endowed them with the GT2 graphics available on the "Kaby Lake" common silicon shared between the Xeon E3-1200 V6 and 7th generation Core series.

All eight SKUs launched by Intel are quad-core and feature 8 MB of L3 cache, six of them feature HyperThreading. Three of the SKUs feature integrated graphics. The SKUs without integrated graphics have 74W TDP rating, the ones with it have 78W TDP rating. Some of the notable SKUs include the E3-1280 V6, with 3.90 GHz nominal clocks, E3-1275 V6 with 3.70 GHz clocks and GT2 integrated graphics; and E3-1225 V6, featuring 3.30 GHz clocks, and integrated graphics. The Xeon E3-1200 V6 series processors will be built in the LGA1151 package, and will be compatible with the C232 and C236 chipset motherboards. The company could launch these chips by the end of 2016.

XFX Readies a Fanless Radeon RX 460 Graphics Card

XFX is among the first ready with a passively-cooled Radeon RX 460 graphics card. Pictured below, the card uses a dense aluminium fin-stack heatsink that's longer than the 17.8 cm PCB but two slots thick, cooling the 75W TDP GPU. The heatsink uses a pair of nickel-plated copper heat pipes to convey heat directly drawn from the GPU, to two ends of the fin-stack. The heatsink also appears to draw heat from the VRM, although the memory chips appear to be cooled passively. The card relies on the PCI-Express slot for all its power needs, display outputs include one each of DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b, and dual-link DVI. The card is currently released in China, where it's priced at 999 RMB. It remains to be seen if XFX launches it elsewhere.

Vega Not Before 2017: AMD to Investors

In a leaked presentation meant for its investors, AMD states that it expects to launch the "Vega" GPU architecture no sooner than 2017. The company plans to get it out within the first half of 2017. What makes this decision significant is that the company isn't planning on making bigger GPUs on its existing "Polaris" architecture, and its biggest product is the $249 Radeon RX 480. This leaves the company's discrete GPU lineup virtually untended at key price-points above, against NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1070, GTX 1080, and TITAN X Pascal, at least for the next five months.

In the mean time, AMD could launch additional mobile SKUs based on the Polaris 10 and Polaris 11 chips. The reasons behind this slow-crawl could be many - AMD could be turning its chip-design resources to the various semi-custom SoCs it's working on, for Microsoft and Sony, with their next-generation game consoles; AMD Vega development could also be running in-sync with market availability of HBM2 memory. 2017 promises to be a hectic year for AMD, with launch of not just Vega, but also its "ZEN" CPU architecture, the "Summit Ridge" processor, and APUs based on the CPU micro-architecture.

MSI Intros GeForce GTX 1060 3GB OCV1 Graphics Card

MSI introduced its compact, cost-effective GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB OCV1 graphics card. Pictured below, the card features a compact design that makes it fit for SFF builds, and has the muscle for maxed out 1080p gaming. The card features a custom-design PCB that draws power from a single 6-pin PCIe power connector, to support factory-overclocked speeds of 1544 MHz core, 1759 MHz GPU Boost, and an untouched 8.00 GHz GDDR5-effective memory, against reference clocks of 1506/1709 MHz.

The custom-design cooling solution is a simple copper-core aluminium heatsink with radially-projecting fins, cooled by a single 80 mm fan. The card is 18.8 cm long. Based on the 16 nm GP106 silicon, the MSI GTX 1060 3 GB OCV1 features 1,152 CUDA cores, 72 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and 3 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 192-bit wide memory interface. MSI didn't reveal pricing, but we expect this card to be priced close to the $199 baseline NVIDIA set for this SKU.
