AMD Reports 2016 Second Quarter Results

AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today announced revenue for the second quarter of 2016 of $1,027 million, operating loss of $8 million, and net income of $69 million, or $0.08 per diluted share. Non-GAAP operating income was $3 million and non-GAAP net loss was $40 million, or $0.05 per share.

"In the second quarter we accomplished a significant milestone as we returned to non-GAAP operating profitability based on solid execution and strong demand for our semi-custom and graphics products," said Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO. "Based on the strength of our semi-custom products and demand for our latest Radeon RX GPUs and 7th Generation A-Series APUs, we are well positioned to drive growth and market share gains in the second half of the year."

NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX TITAN X Pascal

In a show of shock and awe, NVIDIA today announced its flagship graphics card based on the "Pascal" architecture, the GeForce GTX TITAN X Pascal. Market availability of the card is scheduled for August 2, 2016, priced at US $1,199. Based on the 16 nm "GP102" silicon, this graphics card is endowed with 3,584 CUDA cores spread across 56 streaming multiprocessors, 224 TMUs, 96 ROPs, and a 384-bit GDDR5X memory interface, holding 12 GB of memory.

The core is clocked at 1417 MHz, with 1531 MHz GPU Boost, and 10 Gbps memory, churning out 480 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The card draws power from a combination of 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe power connectors, the GPU's TDP is rated at 250W. NVIDIA claims that the GTX TITAN X Pascal is up to 60 percent faster than the GTX TITAN X (Maxwell), and up to 3 times faster than the original GeForce GTX TITAN.

Sharkoon Announces the Shark Zone M50 Gaming Mouse

Sharkoon expands its range of peripherals and introduces a programmable mouse for gamers, which is also suitable for left-handers thanks to its symmetrical design. The Sharkoon SHARK ZONE M50 Gaming Laser Mouse, with the typical yellow cable, offers subtle yellow LED lighting and technical advantages for gamers: Avago ADNS-9800 sensor with up to 8,200 DPI plus a polling rate of 1,000 Hz and a lift-off distance from one to five millimeters. Complete gaming profiles can easily be saved in the onboard memory of the M50. Thus, even complex key sequences, including delays and mouse clicks, can be easily executed. Thanks to its internal memory, no settings are lost within the extensive gaming software.

ADATA Announces SE730, SC660, and SV620 External Solid State Drives

Super Talent Intros the Nova Series SATA-Express SSD

Super Talent introduced the Nova line of SSDs in the 9.5 mm-thick 2.5-inch form-factor, which take advantage of the PCI-Express bus, over the SFF8639 connector, which either wires out as U.2 or SATA-Express. It provides the drive with 32 Gb/s of bandwidth on machines with PCI-Express gen 3.0, which the drive pays forward with sequential read speeds of up to 3,000 MB/s, and sequential write speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s. The drive comes in capacities ranging between 120 GB to 1920 GB.

Phanteks Announces GeForce GTX 1080 Full Coverage Water Block

Phanteks unveiled a new full-coverage water block for reference GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards (Founders Edition), the PH-GB1080-X. The block is made of nickel-plated copper with a clear acrylic top over the coolant channel, and an opaque film linking the two ends of the acrylic top. The top features three LED mounts, from which you can insert 1 mm-dia LEDs. Available now, the block is priced at $129.99.

PNY Unveils its GeForce GTX 1060 Graphics Card

PNY today unveiled its GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. Based on a custom-design PCB, the card sticks to NVIDIA reference clock speeds of 1506 MHz core, 1709 MHz GPU Boost, and 8 Gbps memory. The card features a custom aluminium fin-stack cooling solution with a pair of 70 mm fans. The card draws power from a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. The card is expected to be priced around $279.

FRAPS to Make a Comeback with Windows 10 Support

The popular frame-rate overlay, screengrab and recording utility FRAPS is set to make a comeback. The new version 3.6.0 comes with official Windows 10 support, with support for all of the utility's nifty features. FRAPS developer Beepa did not comment on when they plan to release version 3.6.0, only stating that they "hope to have it available as soon as possible," and that its development is in progress. Meanwhile we have a screenshot of a development build running on Windows 10 to chew on.

AMD Releases Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.2 WHQL

AMD on 19th July, released a WHQL-signed version of Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.2 drivers. The company first released the RSCE 16.7.2 as a Beta on the 12th of July. The change-log of the new 16.7.2 WHQL drivers don't say exactly what is different between the 16.7.2 Beta and the 16.7.2 WHQL; so we guess it's just 16.7.2 with WHQL certification. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Now Available

NVIDIA announced availability of the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. Targeted at the Radeon RX 480, the GTX 1060 is priced at USD $249, however, its own Founders Edition (reference) card is priced at $299, and available exclusively from the company website. The GTX 1060 is based on the new 16 nm GP106 silicon, featuring 1,280 CUDA cores, 80 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and a 192-bit GDDR5 memory interface, holding 6 GB of memory.

The core on the GTX 1060 is clocked at 1506 MHz, with a maximum GPU Boost frequency of 1709 MHz, and 8 Gbps memory, which puts out 192 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The card draws power from a single 6-pin PCIe power connector, as the chip's TDP is rated at just 120W. You get most of the features NVIDIA introduced with the "Pascal" architecture, but the biggest change is lack of NVIDIA SLI support. Even custom-design cards will lack SLI support. NVIDIA's add-in card (AIC) partners will launch their offerings today, alongside the Founders Edition SKUs.

Toshiba and Western Digital Celebrate the Opening of New Fab 2 in Japan

Toshiba Corporation and Western Digital Corporation today celebrated the opening of the New Fab 2 semiconductor fabrication facility located in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, Japan. Expanded use of flash memory in smartphones, SSDs, and other applications is driving continued growth of the global flash memory market. The New Fab 2 facility will support the conversion of the companies' 2D NAND capacity to 3D flash memory, allowing realization of solutions offering higher densities and better device performance.

Construction of New Fab 2 began in September 2014. Following partial completion of the facility in October 2015, Toshiba and SanDisk (acquired in May 2016 by Western Digital Technologies Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Digital Corporation) worked together to implement leading-edge manufacturing capabilities for mass production of 3D flash memory, and first-phase production started in March of this year. The parties intend to further invest to expand production capacity over time, depending on market conditions.
