I don't know... maybe they are holding back on it because they feel they are competing well enough as it is, or something. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't been released yet.

Hell, i am still wondering what happened to the 3850X2. It was supposed to be out a while back and then never surfaced. I am sure that the 4850x2 will be out pretty soon.

Well, it is said that it's performance was way more than ATI(amd) expected. So, they might be holding out to see what nVidia has up their sleeves, before releasing this monster. Also, they might be scared that it performs too well, and it takes profits from the 4870X2's.

Thats a good point, but I dont want to pay the price of a 4870 x2 when the specs for the 4850 x2 look so good for so much less...

Hell, i am still wondering what happened to the 3850X2. It was supposed to be out a while back and then never surfaced. I am sure that the 4850x2 will be out pretty soon.

The 3850x2 was released by Asus and I believe it was a side project engineered by them with out ATI's help. If you google it you can find them for sale but the price is retarded.

The 4850x2 is different because ATI have announced it so it should be released in full like the 4870x2 and shipped by all 3rd distributors. I agree with the theory that the 4850x2 is just faster than ATI planed for. If you look for some 4850 1Gb reviews you see in games like Crysis that can actually use the larger frame buffer the 4850 can be as fast as the 4870 up to 1900x1200. Since ATI has been working with DDR3 much longer than DDR5 I have the feeling they just simply over engineered the card since the 4850 is the same core as the 4870 there isnt much stopping the card from being just as good as the 4870x2.

I've been holding off my upgrade since i first heard about the 4850x2 months ago. I have heard someone say the 4850x2 will be held back and released to combat whatever reiteration of the GTX 280 Nvidia plans to release. Since Nvidia won't have a new 280 till Q1 2009.... If that's true I'm gonna be very disappointed.

Either way I dont think I'll wait too long since the price regular 4850s is dropping so much. Gaming @ 1680x1050 I'll be happy with 2x 512mb 4850.

The smartest play for AMD would be to wait to roll it out since it does perform so well. NVidia is gonna release something probably later this fall to try and get some sales during the holidays. Thats what they always do. Probably a revamp of the 280 like they did with the 260.
I suspect they will release the 4850x2 then. By that time they will have enough 4870x2 sales that having both on the market won't be a big deal to them.

I don't see the need for it.

ATI already has a good selection to choose from in the 4800 series.

It's cheaper to produce than the 4870x2 and it's supposed to be cheaper + faster than the GTX280.

from what i remember, the 3850x2 performed better (go figure) than the 70x2 in some tests, and pretty much made the 70x2 obsolete, and although i didnt read the actual cancellation press, im sure it was canned for sales reasons. The 3850x2 would have been a favorite, even today. They may be afraid that the 4850x2 will perform on par with the 4870x2. It probably has something to do with the limitations, in that both the cards have the exact same bottleneck. So in theory, a 70x2 should be ~180% the performance of a single 70, and a 50x2 the same, but because of a bottleneck, the 70x2 is capped at 140% or so, which happens to be the same bottleneck for the 50x2, so they would be similar in performance. They should do what NV did and just do like the GX2, one single card, which is similar to 2x8800GTS512.
these are all theoretical, and all imo.

What do you mean "one single chip? Its two chips just like the 4870x2 or 3870x2 the big difference is it uses two board instead of one.

I honestly think ATI's design of the 3870X2-4870X2 is much better than nvidias mainly due to heat. I would think the Dual GPU board/cards from nvidia would run much warmer than ATI's design and a pain in the but to clean compared to ATI's.

^^ +1

The cost of fabrication is also much lower for ATI's design.

the 4850X2 is supposed to be the best bang for the buck card, it should be a rocking card and hope it comes out at around 300 like they said.

Whats killing me it the waiting period. ATI said they would launch this in Sept but now I'm thinking they wont release it until Nov-Dec and I highly doubt theyt would launch it at $300 that would mean they would have to sell the 4870 1gb models for close to $225-250. I just dont see that happening. I think it will retail for $400 and the 4870x2 will be around $470 at that time. The 4870 1Gb would stay around $299.

Honestly I hope your right but it would kill the sales of almost every card on the market... ATi still has many 4800 boards in circulation and needs to sell them before owning the market with a single product.

My guess is if they do decide to release it, it wwill be after they slow production on 4870X2's and let the surplus start to dry up so they don't have thousands of them sitting in warehouses waiting for a price drop.

I'm thinking the holiday season, but who knows.
